There is a new article online from Home Media Magazine which gives information on a limited theatrical release in the US for “Ballet Shoes,” the BBC film staring Emma Watson (Hermione Granger). Set to take place in a total of “171 theaters in 77 markets across 35 states,” the showings will start on August 26th, the week prior to the film’s DVD release in the US on September 2. Additionally, the article notes that “All participating theater chains within a 20-mile radius of the showcasing theaters will begin playing the film’s trailer Aug. 1 and will feature the theatrical poster beginning Aug. 4.” Readers will remember “Ballet Shoes” was first broadcast on BBC1 last December. The release of the Region 2 DVD in the UK followed shortly after in January.

Sweet story, sweet movie. Not one of those “OMG, what a fabulous movie!” But a very enjoyable one nonetheless. I watched it in parts on YouTube. The 3 sisters are great. I’ll be buying the DVD as a gift for a special young girl.

The other two lead girls knocked socks off Emma’s acting and the film’s pretty dull but hey, it’s Emma Watson so the Americans will be fawning no doubt no matter how rubbish it is.

I saw it on youtube, lol, it was okay-it was a sweet story, but again Emma Watson has those small little annoying habits that makes me mad. It was a good movie though, nothing I would pay theater money for tho.

I have to agree with you. The other two girls were far better than her, which is kind of pathetic since she’s older than them and has done 5 blocbuster movies with the finest British actors. You would think she’d be pretty damn good right now.

The movie was, imo, boring so I’m really surprised it’s being released in movie theatres.

I’m going to have to agree with you a little bit. I didn’t think it was that boring, it was good overall, but not a WOWWW movie. (: The other girls did do better than her now that I think of it. Emma was just pretter. Haha. :D

I watched on youtube. If it’s playing near us, I’ll go see it again with my mom.

I read “Ballet Shoes” years ago and loved it. it is a really sweet story. I also enjoyed the movie very much. All 3 Fossil sisters were very good. I thought Emma did very well and should be very proud of her performance.

Avatar Image says:

Also, i would like to add, that i think Emma did a better job as Pauline Fossil then Hermione Granger…that is all.

Avatar Image says:

I have to disagree with everyone who says it was rubbish. It is not an adventure film – it is a story of 3 sisters in 1920/30s London who go to stage school. If that sounds like a rubbish synopsis to you then don’t bother. But I loved it when it was on TV at Christmas, bought the DVD and have watched it several time since. Definately a chick flick though!

Emma’s performance was good. The other girls were great especially Petrova but then I never thought Emma was the best child actress in Britain – probably just the luckiest and richest!

Also fab supporting performances from the adults – I LOVE Victoria Wood (nana) she’s a comedic writer actress and standup national treasure. Don’t know if anyone in the US would have heard of her.

Avatar Image says:

Emma gave a great performance. Her character was so much more complex than the other two sisters and she nailed it. Hopefully this will open up some doors for awards, Emma got really good reviews from the critics when it first came out.

Avatar Image says:

Emma did a very good job indeed, and garnered some very good reviews in Britain. I can’t wait to get the DVD.

The usual carping of the female Emma-haters isn’t even annoying any more; it’s mainly just pitiful—absolutely predictable and utterly unimportant.

Avatar Image says:

emma really was great in this movie. I give her credit for being able to show Pauline’s selfish side yet also make her likeable. I enjoyed the movie entirely. They probably are releasing it for award considerations in the US. At the very least, it will be fun to watch on the big screen.

Avatar Image says:

YAY!! I loved this movie, the only way to watch it was online so I’m excited to finally see it!

Warren, I find this a very sexist and demeaning comment. FIrst of all, how do you know that all the people posting somewhat negative reviews of Emma are female, and secondly, so what if they are? Do females not have the right to voice their opinion of another female if it’s negative? So far, everyone is staying polite, but just a few people felt that her performance wasn’t that great. nothing wrong with voicing your opinion as long as it isn’t offensive, like yours was.

Ok, so because I said the two other girls were better than her makes me a hater? I really don’t like people make assumptions like that. First of all, I’m totally not a hater. I really like Emma; she’s nice, pretty and intelligent and dispiste all the fortune and fame has remained as a very down-to-earth and sweet girl. I just don’t think she’s a great actress. Sure she’s still at the beginning of her career and I don’t want to judge her too harshly. I really wish she will improve over the years and will be successfull, just like the other Potter kids. I just don’t see that yet.

I could go on to explain WHY I don’t like her in the Potter films – I think she’s behind both Dan and Rupert – but I don’t want to start a argument here. Obviously some people consider her to be good seeing as she has won so many fan awards. Her acting techinque just irritates me in the Potter films with GoF being the worst of all.

She was, however, slightly better in Ballet Shoes – still behind the other two girls, who are much younger which is why I sais it’s kind of pathetic. She had some good scenes, but again, I don’t think let herself go, you know what I mean? I get the feeling she’s more like thinking ‘now I’m acting’ instead of fully getting into the character. For example, when she was reciting Midsummer Night’s Dream she said it like it was a pretty piece of poetry. She didn’t bring it to life, nothing. Yeah, she’s still young so I wasn’t expecting a masterclass performance you would get at the Globe, but it still didn’t do me anything. I didn’t feel it. She just looked pretty.

I really hope she improves in HBP because DH is going to be a challenge for all the young actors. She did improve in OotP and also in Ballet Shoes so I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

What I find very annoying though, is that when you say something remotely negative about her you get called a hater. I’m really sorry I’m not worshipping her and calling her the next Helen Mirren but she just doesn’t do it for me. Not yeat, at least.

I’m still really surprised it will be released in movie theatres. It was an okay, feel-good, made-for-tv movie but not exactly the WOW material, as someone put it.

Funny how these girls keep proving Warren right. This site is know for it’s petty fangirls.

I loved this book and I’ve heard good things about Emma’s performance, I hope it comes to a theatre near me.

@ helena123,

For me, the problem is less about what you say about Emma, but more about how often you say it.

Just about every time Leaky posts news about Emma, you and others post essentially the same negative comments you’ve posted so many times before.

Why do you keep repeating yourselves?? Do you think the rest of us didn’t understand your feelings the first ga-zillion times you said it?? Some might call your behavior obsessive.

I am a fanatic about the HP books. I am much less enthralled with the films. But I will never understand that group of Leaky posters who constantly criticize Emma, Rupert, or Dan. In my opinion, it’s gotten REALLY OLD.

Avatar Image says:

I think Emma has been slowly getting better. I think she played Pauline better than Hermione. I saw Ballet Shoes on Youtube and thought it’s a cute family movie. I would save your money and just buy the DVD though.

Avatar Image says:

No matter how you cut it guys, Emma has got the natural charisma, star power and stage presence that most entertainers could only hope for but really know that it’s a gift and cannot be had any other way.

Emma is veeeery likeable and in show-biz thats what keeps the ratings up. To put it simply – She got what it takes – She’s a gift to all of us from the show-biz Gods.

Avatar Image says:

I love Emma and I don’t think she’s a bad actress at all, I mean she’s not going to be up for an Oscar anytime soon, but I’ve seen far worse . What I do have a problem with is this comment made by “Jay”...

“The other two lead girls knocked socks off Emma’s acting and the film’s pretty dull but hey, it’s Emma Watson so the Americans will be fawning no doubt no matter how rubbish it is.”

What is that about? Since when do all Americans think exactly alike and can’t tell the difference between a rubbish performance/film and an award worthy one? Perhaps you should try learning to critique a performance/film without being rude and insulting an entire country for absolutely no reason.

Avatar Image says:

I don’t think the other two girls were better. I liked the 3 performances the same way. Ballet Shoes it’s not particurarly remarkable, but still enjoyble because of them.

I also think that the “Dan-better-than-Emma” acting point of view is, IMO, simply ridicolous.

Avatar Image says:

Oooh August 26th is my birthday :D …just in case anyone felt like sending me a nice email or something lol xD

Avatar Image says:

the movie was so-so, i don’t think it needs to come to theateres personally. Emma did a nice job but that still doesn’t mask the fact that its another chikflik. An over all decent movie that i enjoyed watching, but it didn’t draw much emotion from my already emotionless soul

Avatar Image says:

I too saw Ballet Shoes when it aired over xmas on BBC. It is quite clear, that this is a TV drama. It was filmed to be watched on TV as it is rather stagey in its narrative and filming. So I am baffled as to why this is getting a cinema release in the states when it didnt even get one here (quite rightly). I think the sole reason for this is to milk extra takings from an Emma Watson fan sector. Perhaps it is a good move in that respect. And there is nothing wrong with that except for the fact that as a cinema release, Ballet Shoes, may be very sleep inducing experience.

Personally, I found Ballet Shoies lacking a little soul. Emma Watson was fine in it but admittedly is upstaged by her on screen sisters. But having said that, there is no doubt she has grown to be a very beautiful young lady and so stands out amongst the cast. To criticise her acting based on HP is unfair as she is trying to widen her range having being restricted to just doing one role in her whole acting career thus far. With time, and providing she is committed, I am sure she will improve on her current trade as she explore a wider range of roles.

Avatar Image says:

I agree with you Professor Potter. Though from what I have seen from Harry Potter and Ballet Shoes, I thought she was better as Pauline. For me I would like to see Emma do a Romantic comedy or a comedy in general. All the HP movies and Ballet Shoes are drama. I would love her to do something different. Branch out to a role that is totally different from Hermione, since Pauline is kinda like Hermione in a way.

Just to say I don’t think Emma is a bad actress. There are worse out there. I think what she needs to do is to branch out, that is if she wants to continue acting after the HP series.

Avatar Image says:

A-YAY!!! i’m excited! even though i’ve seen parts of it on youtube already & i live in a pretty small town so i probably won’t be seeing it in theatres i’ll definitely get it on DVD!

P.S. it would’ve been cool if they did this w/ My Boy Jack. :)

Three million people in Metro Phoenix and it doesn’t appear to be showing in our area when it is released. Drat.

For all I know, I have not posted gazillion posts about how I’m not particulary fond of her acting. I can’t take the blame for others doing that. (I think the same thing should be said to those Rupert fans who constantly whine about him not winning some awards.)

Wow, this will surely be the last time I’m going to say anything about her acting if I’m going to be labelled as a ‘petty fangirl’ or a ‘Emma-hater’. I had no idea this would be the reaction, since Leaky has always been a place where you can have a good discussion. I thought my arguments were pretty reasonable and I didn’t bash her, like many (jeleasous girls) do. As I said, I really do think she’s a very nice young woman.

“For me I would like to see Emma do a Romantic comedy or a comedy in general. “

Yeah, I’d quite like to see her do a romantic comedy, too. Didn’t she say Julia Roberts is her favourite actress? Maybe she will do something like ‘Notting Hill’. Somehow I think she would be good in those. Anogther genre I think she would do well in is period pieces, something that Keira Knightley does a lot. She certainly has the classic, English rose, beauty.

Mister Hahn:

“I also think that the “Dan-better-than-Emma” acting point of view is, IMO, simply ridicolous”

What do you mean by this? That Dan’s acting is worse than Emma’s and it’s ridiculous to say otherwise? That’s pretty rich, does it mean you can only critisize some actors? I certainly don’t think Dan and Rupert are flawless, far from it, merely that I think they’re both better than Emma. Especially Dan has imroved A LOT over the years.

Avatar Image says:

@ helena123

Saying otherwise is far away from ridicolous to me. Obviously you have your good reasons to enjoy Dan’s acting. I wasn’t replying directly to you, i just saw someone saying something about and i gave my opinion on the subject. What i meant is that arguing that Dan’s acting is better than Emma’s is just like saying that the moon is square-shaped, because it’s self-evident that it’s not. That kind of “ridicolous”. Probably not the exact word i should have used, but definitely close to it. I agree that Dan improved hugely beetween the films, especially in the 4th-5th period, and i think he’s the one who improved the most. He surprised me with his performance in the Order, way more committed than the rest of the trio. But as Harry he completely lacks of any emotional charge. To me, from film 3 to film 5 he seems to be a passenger of the film. The huge amount of action-stuff he dives into can’t hide that completely. Emma as Hermione and Rupert as Ron had that charge, not all the times, they’re not flaw-free, but they had it. And i found it to be more important that any acting technique and any “In character/Out of character” remark.

Sorry if there were a “i think you are ridicolous” misunderstanding. =)

We saw the DVD in England in the spring and I thought it was a nice movie. If you’re familiar with the book, it’s just a very sweet, simple story. It’s not meant to be a blockbuster film, but I think young girls especially will enjoy it. And good for Emma taking the opportunity to do something other than HP. None of the trio are “great” actors, in my opinion, and there isn’t any guarantee any of them will continue to have successful acting careers beyond HP. So I think it’s smart for them to be doing as much as they can do now to improve and challenge themselves. I don’t think Emma has had voice lessons, or an acting coach, as I’ve read Dan mention he has, so give her a break.

Avatar Image says:

The reason Emma hasn’t thrown herself into acting is because she’s been dealing with school. Dan dropped out and decided to be an actor and thus he got an acting coach, etc. That makes sense. I agree that none of the trio are great actors, they are learning and continueing to improve. I doubt any theater near me will have this movie but I would like to see it on the big screen. It had a sweetness to it, plus they would be able to add the extra scenes since there is no time restraint. Keira Knightley has made a living out of movies like these. Not a blockbuster but it is a good family pic nad that’s what sells best here in the states.

I thought Emma had the more challenging role of the three sisters, her character had the most development. Emma was brillant in many of the scenes.

Does anyone know when it will be shown/released in Australia? Just curious. I’d love to see the movie. I really liked that book!

It aired on tv in Canada like 5 months ago.
