A host of international release dates for “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” have now been posted on the official Harry Potter website. At this point several countries are scheduled to see the film several days before the US/UK release set for November 21, 2008. To see the entire list, click here.
Australia 3 weeks later than UK / US and most other countries… what???
Why for OoTP we had pretty much the same release date and now we are back to Dec 11? You would think by now they could do worldwide releases for these movies. I’m not happy… this is ridiculous :(
YAY!!!! On November 20th for Mexico!!! I’m so happy!! Last year OotP opened the 12th, a day later than USA, now it’s backwards, but I think it’s because it went very good last year in a Thursday release, and also this year the 20th, 21st, and rest of weekend are Holidays, it’s an important festivity in our country and I think this helps the midnight releases!!! Can’t wait!!!

Okay, I just figured out why “HBP” is so delayed in AUS.
It’s because “Quantum of Solace” is being released on the 27th of November in AUS. Releasing two blockbusters so close together is bad for box office results.
And “Quantum of Solace” is being released this far behind the UK and USA in AUS because Baz Luhrmann’s “Australia” is being released on November 13th.
Neither WB or SONY want to put their box office results at risk by opening just a week before another blockbuster.
But to me this is all negligible because they risk loosing box office sales due to piracy instead.
It’s better to release it on time. Everyone’ll go to both of those.
And why does ‘Australia’ change things?

So, these are the “official” dates…. but in the US we’re still likely to get a Wednesday midnight release, right? Even though it’s not summer? So that would be Nov. 19!! I am keeping my fingers crossed for that. :)
“Quantum of Solace” NOV 5
“Australia” NOV 14
“Half Blood Prince” NOV 21
Australia has a much smaller cinema going population than the UK and USA, so they’re a bit more strategic with their release dates down under.
Baz Lurhmann’s “Australia” has to be released first globally here, so it ain’t moving from NOV 13.
Sony decided to move “QOS” out of the way so that “Australia” doesn’t take its box office sales when is released a week later. So they moved it to NOV 27 instead.
And Warner doesn’t want “QOS” to steal box office sales from “HBP” so it moved it to DEC 11.
Like is said above though, it is all negligible because they risk loosing box office sales due to piracy instead.
