Actor Matt Lewis is the subject of the latest article from the LA Time Hero Complex blog series counting down until the release of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. In this new interview, Matt speaks about his role as the beloved Neville Longbottom, in particular regarding a scene that had fans lamenting when it was cut from Order of the Phoenix, that being the emotional visit with Neville and his parents at St. Mungo. Quotage:

JP: Back to acting then … Was there anything you didn’t get to do as Neville?

ML: There was some stuff that we got to do that was
cut out, which is always a shame. Remember in the “Order of the
Phoenix,” the big battle at the end in the Ministry of Magic? We shot
a lot that wasn’t included in the film. The room with the brains in it
I was kind of looking forward to seeing … The one scene in particular
that I really wanted to do as an actor was the St. Mungo’s Hospital
scene where we see Neville’s parents for the first time. It was just
something that I thought was really important to the character cause it
showed a really soft side to him. His parents were there and they
didn’t recognize him and there was that lovely bit where they give him
the sweet … I remember when I was reading it in the book and it was
tear-jerking and really, really endearing. I just thought in that one
scene it really showed what Neville was all about. How he’s got all
this heart, and even though the doctors are saying that they don’t know
who you are, he still believes in them. And I thought ‘That’s
Neville.’ That heart, that courage, that belief showed what Neville
Longbottom was all about. And as an actor, it’s a shame that we didn’t
get to do that. I’ve never really had to do anything on that level
emotionally, so that would’ve been a great challenge.

Matt also looks forward to Deathly Hallows, as well as the soon-to-be-released Half-Blood Prince.

JP: You’re filming or about to film ‘Deathly Hallows,’ and
Stuart Craig said the films have always been dark, but how do you feel
about the films’ increasing darkness?

ML: There has been an element of darkness all the
way through. You have this evil element in Voldemort, a sort of
ultimate evil all the way through. But the previous films have always
had a sort of happy ending and they all develop friendship and love,
and it started to get — towards 5 and now 6 — where the happy endings
were not so easy. And especially here in the “Half-Blood Prince,” it’s
not a ‘nice’ story. It’s very dramatic, very dark, and it’s really got
this sense of foreboding throughout the film that just keeps getting
worse because Voldemort’s getting away with it every year. Harry’s not
saving the day anymore. In that respect, it’s definitely getting
darker.

I will say one thing about “Half-Blood Prince,” though. Though it
is much more sinister, there’s a lovely balance this year with the
comedy as well that makes it more relatable.

Avatar ImageKirsikka says: It is a shame they cut out so many good scenes. So if the movie gets too long? the longer the better!Avatar Imagephantomles says: Don't worry Matt your time of glory will come at end of DH (Nagini) as long as they keep it in!!Avatar ImageKissa says: I hope they will add in all those out takes some time in the future. Make some special edition blue-rays or something. :) Lovely interview! I adore Matt. :)Avatar ImageErinM says: WB probably knows exactly what they're doing by with holding the outtakes. Rest assured, Potter fans, there will be a HUGE box set of the DVD's and all of the out takes we haven't seen yet as a new marketing ploy after DH2 is released. And we'll be right there, lining up with money in our hands, right? :)Avatar Imageanne1 says: I hope they do release the outtakes when they release the final 7 film box set! Would love to see more MOM. Sounds like they didn't even film the St M scene, which is a shame, and I think one of the more important omissions from the series. Most I don't mind about but that and the locket at Grimmauld Place scene were both pretty important.Avatar Imageele0206 says: What he says....it gives me the feeling that he KNOWS how neville is. He really seems into the books and seems to pay a lot of attention in what's in the books. I'd love to see all the outtakes, I wish they had put it into the OotP dvd! so...yay for Matt!!Avatar ImageMary11_hplvr4l says: there was a brain room! man wish I could've seen it.. matt is right! that's st mungo's scene would've been epic! I would've loved to see him do it..for matt hahaAvatar ImageCandyCane2304 says: I love Matt Lewis.Avatar Imagechazlaz says: I hope they release it sometime.Avatar Imagemouse68 says: "there was a brain room! man wish I could’ve seen it" You will, when David Yates gets to release his original three hour cut of OOTP on the extended edition in a few years time. Avatar Imagecghambright says: I love Matthew Lewis. And he is so Handsome! I really agree with him about that scene in OOTP when Neville's mom gives him the candy wrapper. It's a really touching, character-defining moment and it sucks that it didn't make it into the film. But I really hope he keeps acting I would LOVE to see him in other things. I can't wait to see him in the Deathly Hallows movie when he cuts off the head of the snake! HBP comes out in 13 DAYS!!!Avatar ImageLivelaughlovepotter says: I always missed the Brain Room and the Flagrante curse with the spinning rooms. St. Mungo's would have been a nice show of Neville's softer feelings, like Matt said.Avatar Imagezoltan42 says: "I think if Steve Kloves had written the script then that scene definitely would’ve made it in the movie." I don't think so, because that was just one part of the entire St. Mungo's sequence. I have a feeling he would have included St. Mungo's in his first draft -- this is based on his comments regarding HBP and the first draft having every memory -- but I also have a feeling that would have been cut during the following drafts. In a book you can have several plot lines or sequences that diverge from the main plot. Film adaptations, on other hand, often seem to focus on one main plot and you cut what diverges from that plot -- or find some shorthand way of dealing with it. The main goal of being at St. Mungo's was Arthur healing after the attack, which they were able to cover with the "Daddy's back" moment at Grimmauld Place. So regardless of who wrote the screenplay, I'd presume the entire St. Mungo's sequence would have been cut and would have been cut rather early in the process.Avatar Imagezoltan42 says: "I think if Steve Kloves had written the script then that scene definitely would’ve made it in the movie." Nah, I think it and the entire St. Mungo's sequence would have been cut no matter who wrote the screenplay. From Kloves comments on adapting HBP his first drafts seem to try to include everything (e.g., his first draft included every memory). However, I also thing St. Mungo's would have been cut very quickly. When adapting a book, the task often is sifting through the entire book, coming up with one main plot line, and cutting (or come up with a shorthand way of dealing with) anything that doesn't apply to the main plot or at least doesn't diverge too much from it. Harry and what happens to him has been the main focus of the movies. The main point of going there was Arthur's attack. They were able to cover that with the scene of him coming home from St. Mungo's. Neville's parents were secondary, and were covered with his talk with Harry,. (The fact they could use sets that were used elsewhere in the movie probably didn't hurt, either, rather than building new sets for St' Mungo's.) From that POV, the entire sequence could have been easily cut, and, as I said, I assume was cut rather early in development.Avatar ImageHagrid 713 says: I'll second others comments - I want an extended version that has all the delted scenes and all the bloopers and out takes - don't care if it's 10 DVD's - I'll buy it!!!Avatar ImageNoble Birth Descending says: What a brilliant analysis of the St Mungo's scene by Matt! Kudos!Avatar ImageJPHufflepuff says: BRAIN ROOM IN THE EXTENDED EDITION!!! WE WANT IT WARNER BROS!!!Avatar Imagetreacletartftw says: Matt Lewis is so wonderful! I really hope that extended version gets released soon. I'd love to see the brain room scene!Avatar ImageKathyWeasley87 says: I love him as Neville and I also really missed that scene.Avatar Imagevivianlovegood123 says: They should put out a dvd of just the stuff they cut. That would be amazing. Once again Matt Lewis proves himsself to be made of awesome.Avatar ImagePaintTheSky says: wow they actually filmed the brain room? I agree with JP!!Avatar ImageDiamondWings says: OMG!!! Yeah is really sad the fact that they didn't show the hospital scene! I really can't wait!Avatar ImageLuce_depp says: He really is a great Neville...i wihs they'd done St Mungo's as well. I'd have watched it even if it made the movie 20000 hours long...Avatar Imagegryffindor1991 says: Yeah come on Wb we want to see some of the stuf that was cut. Like St. Mungos, the Brain room, and anything thing else that is interesting.Avatar Image89ravenclaw says: I love how much Matt just gets it.Avatar ImageTasyaWeasley says: i agree with jp .Avatar Image89ravenclaw says: I love how much Matt just gets it. Also, where is all this unseen footage, huh? DVD fail.Avatar Imagekismatt says: Nice interview! Yeah, I'm not sure what WB is doing, holding out on that extra footage. We Want!! 13 days, 22 hours, and 57 minutes to HBP!Avatar ImageDolemite says: Can't believe how goofy he looks as Neville.Avatar ImageBader says: My thoughts exactly regarding the St Mungo's Hospital scene. I was looking forward to it the most.Avatar Imagegirlatty1 says: I would ove to see those out-takes.Avatar Imagegranger_malfoy says: man they need a dvd full of all the scenes that were cut from the first hp to the last! thats what i say. the end of order of pheonix was well to short they needed the brain bit n neville hosptial trip otherwise when in dh he gets all brave it seem like it came outa nowhere!Avatar ImageNinnyTreetops says: Whenever they talk of great material that has been cut, I wonder WHY didn't you put that on the DVd, WB? WHY? It's right there. No need for scale corrections or anything. Have an editor slpa together teh raw material, and make the fans happy! Just sayin'Avatar Imagehermione97 says: I hope they will spare all the scenes from the book to the new movie!Avatar ImageBockers says: Really nice interview. I also wish they'd done the St. Mungo's scene but i guess they can only have so much in the film =/ Even if they'd just filmed it and put it on the DVD i would have been happy. Neville is one of my favourite character's for that very reason. Can't wait for his moment in DH though.Avatar Imagejrivas1284 says: OMG i would be mad if i was Neville....Shame on you David Yate....Avatar Imagecghambright says: I love Matthew Lewis. HBP comes out in 13 DAYS!!!Avatar Imagecghambright says: It's not David Yates fault that the scene was cut. I think if Steve Kloves had written the script then that scene definitely would've made it in the movie. Avatar Imagehermyone08 says: aww, it was disappointing that neville's scenes were cut in OotP.Avatar Imagezoltan42 says: I just realized I posted two different versions of the same comments. The connection was so-so the first time, and I didn't think it was accepted the first time, so I did it again.Avatar ImageLadyCake says: You know that's what I love about JK and especially DH. It's one of the reasons why it's my favorite of the HP series. In this one book more than anything else JK shows that it really could have been Neville. In many ways it is him, because while Harry is off being "the chosen one" who is tasked with finding and killing the Horcruxes, Neville is still in Hogwarts leading the underground resistance...saving kids when and where he can...making sure that they are safe in the room of requirement...fouling up the works for the DeathEater teachers when and where he can. That is also the sign of a hero, and Neville definitely shows his metal. I truly hope they show him doing that in the DH films, and I hope they start to show Neville in that light more in the HBP film as well.Avatar Imagejrivas1284 says: I think Matt Lewis look really hot in that pic... dont he?????Avatar Imagebengtson_98 says: Great interview... I also feel like they should have keep in the part about his parents in St. Mungos because it was such a big part of Neville and on top of that in GoF when Moody is showing the unforgivable curses Neville is clearly bothered by it and Hermione says that but it never gets explained!!Avatar ImageWON_TWO says: Good stuff...Avatar ImageDiamondWings says: I'll read it later!Avatar Imagegoodenough says: matt lewis is <3 I really really really would have love to see this seen with him in the movies, as it is one of the most touching seens in the seris.Avatar ImageJTEL99 says: I wonder why they didn't put the extra scenes on the OotP 2nd DVD? Maybe because it was all green screen stuff and would have just looked silly?Avatar ImageMushMania says: I love Matt! and i love Neville i relate to him so well!Avatar Imagevivianlovegood123 says: They should put out a dvd of just the stuff they cut. That would be amazing. Once again Matt Lewis proves himself to be made of awesome.Avatar ImageHydrus says: Maybe someday they will issue the directors cuts of each movie. Sit down and watch the series for a week.Avatar Imagecheeserpleaser says: It is a pity that they did not incorporate these pivotal scenes in the development of his character into the movie. I wish that, at the least, they had included this footage in the DVD, as fans would have immensely enjoyed the opportunity to see what could have been.Avatar Imagepotterrock says: ahahhahah...mattt iss great....cool interview :) tankksss TCL :DAvatar ImageBookworm_Weasley says: You mean they filmed the extra stuff in the Ministry? They actually FILMED the brain room? WHY ISN'T IT ON THE DVD?!?!?!Avatar ImageHeavenly_Horcrux says: The scene with the brains would have been great!Avatar ImageRavenclaw98 says: He is one of my fav. actors!!Avatar ImageLilleby says: Yes, there should come an extended with ALL the deleted scenes in. Such as Peeves, the Hourglasses remove 150 points, Dumbledore tells Harry about Priori Incantatem, the vampire boggart, the original battle between Sirius and Bellatrix and so on...!(:Avatar Imagebadger666 says: It is too bad they didn't do the St. Mungo's scene. It would have been good. But at least Neville will have some awesome scenes in DH. Avatar Imagelevi-OH-sa not levio-SA says: i completely agree with him on the whole order of the phoenix thing....i would have liked to have seen more of the dept of mysteries stuff but definately definately definately neville should have had the moment with his parents, it explains exactly why he is the way he is...he isnt just an idiot, i was really upset that they took that away from the character in the moviesAvatar ImageWeasleyBoy says: Do not worry my Potter friends ! I'm sur after last part of DH, Warner will release a complete set with extended versions of the movies (like Lotr) that why they only put small deleted scenes in the dvd extras, not the major ones ! After all Yates once declared that he made an almost 3 hour long movie. Thanks Matt for letting us know that there is more for Ootp that we saw.Avatar Imagemrscole says: I was very disappointed in the St Mungos scene being cut, as Ml said it was very important to Neville's character and gave such an insight to the trio about what the DE's were capable of. As for the brain room why it was comical but not near as important.Avatar ImageMidnightSun321 says: its a shame!! i luv neville!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Avatar ImageKC Nox says: I want to see all those other scenes :)
