Heyman on Length of Battle of Hogwarts for Deathly Hallows: Probably Be 30 Minutes

Jul 16, 2009

Harry Potter producer David Heyman has given a new interview to Collider.com where he discusses at length the upcoming Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Among the many topics such as the forthcoming Ultimate Collectors DVD, info on why Scrimgeour was cut from Half-Blood Prince, we also learn that the scripts are both around 120 pages long, and notably some new (slight spoilers) about the highly anticipated end of DH Part Two, including the Battle of Hogwarts. Quotes of interest:

With the 2 parts that you’re filming now, what is the longest part of the shoot? Like what scene are you guys planning on spending the most time on? HEYMAN: The final battle.

I’m a huge fan of the book. The ending of Book 7 is really climatic in so many ways. Is that going to be like a 20-minute part of the movie or a 30-minute part of the movie? Have you guys already started thinking about that? HEYMAN: Absolutely. I mean we’ve got a script version of it. I think it’ll probably be 30 minutes, they get the Hogwarts fairly early on, but there’s a lot of build up before the battle happens, you know? And there are 2 parts to the battle. There’s the first part and then there’s the post-death of Harry part, if you know what I mean.

I know exactly what you mean. HEYMAN: Yeah, so in a way there’s a couple of different parts to that battle.

Well, it’s almost like the ending of Book 7 and the ending of movie 2-part 2 is almost like what people have been waiting for all the movies to see, which is the big, big showdown. HEYMAN: It’s funny, yes I think that’s true and the showdown will be¦that poses its own challenges in terms of adaptation. Not only the expectation of that final showdown but also what I love about Jo’s work is that’s it’s emotionally rooted. And in the book, actually, Harry doesn’t do much fighting back. In fact, he’s¦I’m not going to use the word but he has the “blank” beaten out of him. I just said well, there’s more engagement in our version of the final battle.

I was going to ask you about that because that’s one of the things, to me, is amazing about the ending of that book is that Harry accepts his fate without knowing what’s going to happen. It can go either way, you know? And it’s sort of he’s¦ HEYMAN: That’s true up until¦when he’s reborn, Harry is aware that Voldemort is vulnerable and is a defeated man. And that’s something that we’re wrestling with and determining right now just so that it works in cinematic terms and not just on a¦yeah that it works cinematically.”

Thanks so much Steve!

I believe I may be the only one who feels this way, but I absolutely HATE the title Deathly Hallows Pt 1 and Deathly Hallows Pt 2. :/ It doesnt really "roll off the tongue" to say, "hey, do you wanna see harry potter and the deathly hallows part one? I mean, why not just title the first film Deathly Hallows, and the second The Battle of Hogwarts, even the focus isn't strictly on the battle. That's just my opinion, and I'm comfortable to disagree with everyone else, but I would like to see a bit of effort in finding more creative or original titles in the next 16 months :) (this is the least of my concerns, of course)Avatar ImageWON_TWO says: So generous...Avatar ImageJillxoxo says: 30 minutes is not that long when you think about all of the monumental - and many grievous - events that take place from the start of the battle to Harry's final moment of truth. If edited too closely together, the audience won't have a proper chance to absorb or recover from one before witnessing the next. And we have all waited a loooong time for this, so if that were to mean a 3-1/2 hour Part Two DH, then I would happliy and most gratefully sit through it. As the saying goes, "Measure twice, cut once." Because, once it's done, it's done. Avatar ImageJadeDanielle says: He's not saying they're thinking of changing it where Harry actually fights back, is he? In that confrontation scene in the forest? If so......that will be quite upsetting! I hope I misread...Avatar ImageLemonFaerie says: Well, I am NOT happy about the length of the script AT ALL. 120 pages each means two 2-hour movies, not two 2 1/2 hour movies, which is what we need. It's about a minute per page of script. Now I am really not happy. And I don't know about 30 minutes for the battle, either, I mean if he's talking strictly the battle, maybe, but otherwise I think that may end up short-changing some of what is so amazing about the end of the book.Avatar Imageliv-wa says: These double posts are killing me...if this one doubles... And I'm cool with a half hour battle. I think it really depends on where the split is. (Does that make sense?) If the split happens early on, I would be nervous about a really long battle because then more stuff would have to be cut. If the split is later, then I would be happy with a reallllly long battle scene.Avatar ImagetheREALGinnyWeasley says: i would have enjoyed the battle to be like an hour...but i guess 30 will work....BUT THEY BETTER NOT MESS IT UPAvatar ImageHP_Flower says: I think 30 minutes is a very good length.... I don't know if I really like the idea of Harry fighting back though...Avatar ImageCandyCane2304 says: @ T-Vey just call it DH1 and Dh2 for short. Avatar ImageDeliaDee says: These movies should definitely be longer than 2 hrs. each. At that length there was absolutely no need to split it up. One 4 hr. long movie is not incredibly excessive. Now what's this crap about Harry getting the crap beaten out of him and that he is going to fight back in the movie. Apparently, I read a different book than these people because all I remember is Harry taking a killing curse. Not only was that not "getting the crap beaten out of him" but it was also absolutely essential. Harry couldn't fight it. That was the point of the sacrifice. It was necessary for him to go into it knowing that he was going to die. He intentionally kept his wand in his cloak so that he wouldn't be tempted to fight which would have nullified the sacrifice. If he'd fought back, he would have died. I'm afraid. I'm very afraid.Avatar ImageLuce_depp says: NO!! don't change it again!! If i walk out of deathy hallows as diappointed at the end as i was with the end of HBP i think i'll cry! I like the way harry doesn't fight back but protects everyone and then kill voldy it was brilliant!Avatar ImageLuce_depp says: NO!! don't change it again!! If i walk out of deathy hallows as diappointed at the end as i was with the end of HBP i think i'll cry! I like the way harry doesn't fight back but protects everyone and then kill voldy it was brilliant!Avatar ImageBwaySaint says: Ohhhh! Wow, sounds fantastic!!! And honestly, from what it appears, with DH, the Potter "purists" will be able to shush. Well, I hope. LOL :) Avatar ImageLeo_Lovegood says: That sounds perfect! :)Avatar Imagesakuranbo07 says: I just hope they don't make it look like Harry fighting back then he falters. He didn't fail, he gave his life to save everyone else like what Lily Potter did for him when he was a baby. Avatar Imagebig_pale says: 120 pages for each script doesn't actually work out to 120 minutes. I've done some screenwriting, and while the rule of thumb is "one minute per page," in actuality a 2 hour movie that has a fair bit of action (as Harry Potter does) will end up being around 100 pages. A 120 page script for this type of movie is just about right: about 2 hours and 20-30 minutes. *** Based off what Heyman said, I think it's pretty much set in stone that movie 1 ends during Malfoy Manor. Which leaves Shell cottage, Gringotts, and Hogwarts as the three big sections. That's perfect. I would imagine the break-in at Gringotts to start at about an hour into the movie. At about 1:30 the trio arrives at the Hogs Head. At about 2:00 Harry dies. At 2:20 Voldy dies. At 2:30...standing ovation.Avatar ImageRinny says: great interview- though the comments about changing harry's "fighting back" makes me a little nervous... as long as it stays true to the essence- i understand the need to change things for cinematic reasons (because cinematic story telling is soo different that book story telling) but i'm just not quite sure what he means be that- like, i hope it doesn't mean we aren't going to get a shot of hagrid carrying a supposedly dead harry and such. or that any moments are taken away from say, neville. of course, i can't really remember the whole specifics on the ending right now... but i trust that they will do the story justice.Avatar Imageccking says: thank god that scene will be longer...but will 30 mins really be enough to fit everything in? i guess we'll have to see how it;s filmed, but i definitely loved the sixth one and hope that the seventh will be filmed with the same colouring scheme and the slowness aspect to it .Avatar ImageRinny says: oh- or i didn't even think about it changing harry's actions before his 'rebirth' since he brought up the rebirth thing in the interview- but that would be awful, if it wasn't clear that harry was sacrificing himself- because that is the whole point! surely that won't happen, because at that point in the story, harry knows he has to die, and voldemort can't die until harry is killed. i think surely he means harry's actions after his 'rebirth'- which again, i'm not quite sure what that would entail exactly...Avatar ImagePadfootLover4ever says: hmm...Harry fighting back?? I don't think so! If they ruin DH (part 2 especially) I will be extremely angry! I am very excited for the battle and also for Prince's tale. The movie better make me cry or I wont be satisfied lol.Avatar Imagetina_als_girl says: As long as we get, say, thirty minutes for the Prince's Tale, I'm good... LOLAvatar Imagesiriuslyamanda says: :)Avatar ImageHPNAIV says: I don't know... I want more specific information. Thirty minutes sounds good, but at the same time it seems too short? And what does "more engagement in our version of the final battle" mean?! What?!Avatar ImageHPNAIV says: Oh, and he says they get to Hogwarts early on? ... Hmm. Just makes me wonder where the split is then.Avatar ImageHalloween Master says: Ultimate Collector's DVD? Where do I find info on that, gotta know. Sounds like the next two movies are going to be really good if there's a 30 minute battle. Hopefully, the next two films will make up for the action that was missing in HBP.Avatar ImagePigmyPuffPie says: Greedo shoots first lolAvatar Imageizziewitch says: Maybe he means Harry fighting before he goes to the forest--fighting maybe alongside the twins, ron, Hermione, Ginny and others. There's no reason he can't fight at the beginning of the battle. But I agree, no way can they change him willingly going to his death in order to save the others and ultimately defeat Voldemort. They can't possibly mean to alter Jo's whole purpose.Avatar ImageHPNAIV says: Sorry for another post but this interivew just makes me confused. I just hope to God they don't ruin the last movie, I am so serious. 2 1/2 hours seems too short now. I want a 3 1/2 hour move - more if possible. And I agree with tina_als_girl, I hope the Prince's tale is good and long because there was a whole chapter dedicated to that! I don't want montages and short little clips and glimpses. Gosh I just hope they do DH justice. I'm starting to get scared...Avatar Imageblackhair says: Wow 30 mins of battle sounds very fascinating Avatar Imagetheyoungwizard says: I want the new countdown to the Deathly Hallows PLEASE!!Avatar ImageBwaySaint says: Okay, who said this pretty much sets it in stone that movie 1 ends at Malfoy Manor? Where in the interview does it state that!?!? Avatar ImageVerity Weasley says: As always we'll have to wait and see, but it had better be good to make up for no battle scene at Hogwarts in HBP. Avatar ImagePhylis says: My son said it should be an hour. There is so much in that book that is in Harry's head...I imagine it will be difficult to get it across. Looking forward to them both!Avatar Imagegryffindor1991 says: awesome. the final battle is exciting and very important. i hope both films are 2-1/2 hours long.Avatar Imagehpfreak1129 says: I hope that by saying Harry fights back doesn't mean when he sacrifices himself! I don't think that JKR would let them change that! I am pretty sure she get a say in the script, right? If they change that then he really wouldn't be sacrificing himself for everybody and the spells that Voldemort put on them would actually stick and work! That would completely change the story, which is why i think that JKR won't let them do that!Avatar ImageKara000 says: 30 mins sounds good. YAYAvatar ImageCrazy4Neville says: OH MY GOSH. THAT IS GONNA BE FRICKEN AWESOME.Avatar ImageHealey says: Yay, another mediocre David Yates film. I CAN'T WAIT!Avatar Imageloony_slytherin says: good enough for me!! :DAvatar Imageloony_slytherin says: good enough for me!! :DAvatar Imageangelvoice says: So cool, I can't wait. Avatar Imagegot2lovme says: wow, can't wait. Hopefully it turns out amazing in the endAvatar Imagebig_pale says: My thoughts on the split: I've been saying it for a while, as have a lot of people: Malfoy Manor. If they do it like that, then the first movie would feature 3 big scenes: 1: The Wedding/On the Run 2: The Ministry Break-In 3: Godric's Halow/Getting the Sword That would end the first movie with them either being caught, or, if they really wanted to go all "cliffhanger" they could end it with Hermione being tortured, and Ron pleading for help, and the Harry sees a piercing blue eye... To be continued Now THAT would be awesome. I said Malfoy Manor being the split point SEEMED set in stone. By that I meant, WHEREVER the split is, based on interviews they SEEM to have made up their mind where it will be. And it SEEMED to me to be Malfoy Manor. Which, as I said, leaves three main sections for the final movie: 1: Shell Cottage (the intro, and the set up for the rest of the movie) 2: Gringotts (the big second act action scene [just as the ministry break-in will be in the first movie]) 3: Hogwarts (the big ending). That just makes the most sense given as Heyman said: "we'll be at Hogwarts fairly early" in the second movie. I would take that to mean "we'll be at Hogwarts with a lot of time left." I speculated by the time they got to Hogs Head, there would be an hour left. That gives plenty of time, to talk to Aberforth, fight, get the princes tale, die, kill Voldy, and live happily ever after. Avatar Imagecghambright says: David Heyman is awesome!! This was a great interview! It’s awesome to get so much informantion about Deathly Hallows. 30 minutes seems a little short for the battle, but maybe that’s because it seems so much longer when you read it. I think they did a brilliant job with HBP and I cant wait to see Deathly Hallows. I’m so excited that we can go from HBP and dive right into Deathly Hallows now without having to wait! It’s so exciting!! Avatar Imagebig_pale says: ...on the other hand. Let's work backwards, assuming we're talking about 2 1/2 hours. The last 5 minutes will be the epilogue. Before that we'll have 15 minutes of Harry talking to Dumbledore and killing Voldy. Before that we'll have 40 minutes of destroying the other Horcruxes, the princes tale, and Harry getting killed. Before that we'll have 10 minutes of talking to Aberforth That right there is an hour and 10 minutes. Let's say there's 20 minutes of the gringotts break-in. And then 30 minutes at Shell Cottage There's 2 hours right there. And then just give 20-30 minutes for all of Malfoy Manor. And there's you're movie. 2 hours and 20-30 minutes. Which means the "To Be Continued..." from movie 1 would occur probably with Harry saying Voldemort's name and the lights going out, and the trio being caught. Just a thought.Avatar Imagecghambright says: I think when he says 30 minutes. I think he means 30 minutes of actual fighting, but I dont think he's including the scene when Harry walks into the forrest and talks to Dumbledore at the train station and The Prince's tale and the part when Snape dies. When you take all of that into consideration I think the WHOLE battle will be about an hour. But Part Two is going to be SOOO action-packed depending on where they split it. So much happens in that part of the book. The Gringotts break-in. The flight on the Dragon. Apparating to Hogsmeade. Aberforth's story. Neville coming out of the portrait. Harry going to the Ravenclaw common room. Harry watching Snape flee. Harry talking to the Grey Lady. Ron and Hermione kissing. The Fiendfyre scene in the Room of Requirement. The actual battle. Snape dying. Harry walking into the forrest. Harry talking to Dumbledore. Neville cutting the head off the snake. Harry's fight with Voldemort. Avatar Imageplacebowiz says: I want 40 minutesAvatar ImageDLupin91 says: I'm sure that the harry fighting back has absolutely nothing to do with the sacrifice part during the meat of the battle Harry does have the snot beaten out of him he loses fred, lupin, tonks and believes to lose Hagrid in pretty quick succession. He is so defeated that he can't make a patronus. Harry doesn't really fight in the battle it is all about him trying to find Voldemort and stay alive with Hermione and Ron. He'll be much more proactive in the fight and we might even see a Lupin and Tonks death scene.Avatar Imagebella vita says: I'm sorry, but their excuse for cutting the battle from HBP was that there was one in DH, which was total BS and unbelievably ridiculous, so all I know is that I better see one hell of a battle in DH! This interview makes me very nervous because DH is my favorite book so potentially changing/screwing up harry's sacrifice and the battle being only 30min doesn't make me all that pleased. I'll wait until we get more specifics before I freak out, but he definitely needs to clarify both of these subjects before I start feeling good about their handling of DH.Avatar ImageBritski says: I still wish they would make the last part rated "R" or at least have some unedited content when the DVD comes out for us major fans. Avatar Imagejessh324 says: How long are all the other scripts?Avatar Image8th Horcrux says: I think the first part ends with the funeral for Dobby and Harry's choice to go after the Horcruxes, not the Hallows. That is a monumental decision for Harry in the book, and it sets up the 2nd part perfectly by presaging the break-in at Gringotts. There you get the sacrifice, the escape, and the resolve to finish what he started, just like 6th movie...Avatar ImageWolfyWizard says: This news is so exciting!!! What's cool is that I first heard this news and the Pottercast Tour Today!Avatar ImageharrietPotter says: that's awesome!! hope they don't compromise on quality. it better be EPIC.Avatar ImageJadeDanielle says: Seriously, this keeps making me more and more nervous. Now I'm so paranoid that they're going to change the bit about Harry sacrificing himself. If they do............ :|Avatar Imagedeadtree says: it's true it will be hard to film that climatic ending-- with Harry not fighting back but not being able to show what he's thinking. I mean it won't look as stupid as the last Twilight film will probably look, featuring Bella standing around doing nothing while everyone else fights, but it will still be hard. Avatar ImageVeinic says: 30 minutes or more will be win for meAvatar Imageforgetmenot_007 says: 30 minutes? Cool!!!!Avatar Imageheliotrope says: Its good to hear them planning all of this - it sounds awesome. I can't wait. :)Avatar ImageBindiiRomeo says: At least there's more of a battle than there was in HBP, I was really disappointed with it. 30 minutes sounds good to me =] xAvatar Imagekmac23va says: It sounds like, if Harry gets the crap beaten out of him, that they're going for more of a Jesus analogy than the books already did...you know, beat the savior and humiliate him before killing him (see also: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe). Frankly, I think they should go for one extra-long movie and cut the scenes that don't matter in the movieverse at this point. Scrimgoeur doesn't matter. Bill and Fleur and the wedding don't matter (and the wedding location was rather wrecked in the HBP movie, no?) Sorry to say, Dobby doesn't matter to the movieverse, which sucks because that was a great scene in the book, but without SPEW the impact of a house elf's sacrifice for a friend is really reduced. At least they're giving the final battle some serious time...my biggest complaint has been how anticlimactic the last two movies have been, though OOTP was the worst offender. I'm still also asking that they cut the epilogue...just end it with the trio, the way it started, and the way the last few movies have ended. Just have Harry atop the astronomy tower looking into a sunrise, with Ron and Hermione flanking him (or standing together next to him).Avatar ImageThe Hufflepuff Giraffe says: Awesome. I love David Heyman. And just thinking about DH Part 1 and 2 is insane. I can't believe there are only two years left!Avatar ImageDanilicous2010 says: this movie is going to be epic!Avatar ImageAradion says: Yeah, but is really 30 minutes enough? Okay, I guess very few things can keep me truly satisfied but I'd love an hour-length fully-fledged battle! Avatar ImageAurelia09 says: Makes me wonder what is going to be left out of these films and what is going to be put in. Surely they must show Snape and Lily as kids and how much he loved her? And I am so looking forward to the Battle of Hogwarts... Missed the ghosts in the last couple of films.. perhaps Headless Nick & Co will be in the fight as they were meant to be... Avatar Imagequoddy says: This better be good...but I feel in an appeased mood. Yaaay! xDAvatar ImageLemonFaerie says: I've now read the interview remarks several times, and I still can't make out exactly what he's referring to. If he means there will be more action for Harry, fine, BUT: he better still make that solitary trek into the forrest and not fight back against Voldemort and he better still get carried out of the forrest by Hagrid with everyone believing he's dead. Outside of that he can fight as much as they want and kick some major butt, but that sequence needs to stay as true to the book as though it were carved in stone ('cuz it IS), I want to be on the floor bawling like I am every time I read it. I do NOT want the emotional impact of that last, best book blunted in the film the way the emotions have been blunted in a lot of the films, especially OoTP. These directors all seem to shy away from really giving us the true emotional depth of the books and I don't understand it. We've missed the hospital scene in GoF, DD's office scene in OoTP, the aftermath of DD's death in HBP. I WANT that. I was overall very pleased with HBP, and Yates finally did give us a bit more emotion (better than OoTP, at least), but he's going to have to push outside his comfort level for DH and really dig deep and deliver. Both part 1 and part 2 need to be epic, Oscar worthy and leave the audience so wrung out at the end that they can hardly stand up to leave the theater.Avatar Imagebiswajit says: wow...for 30 minute.... i mean great...Avatar Imagesplinch says: after seeing hbp i honestly dont trust this man anymore, he already screwed up several plot points for DH. it bothers me that i think this crew thinks they are better story tellers than jo, they re-wrote her work.Avatar ImageFereverto says: Splinch ITA. I don't trust them at ALL. The whole point of "The Forest Again" is Harry's sacrifice. Surely he doesn't mean to change that (but it sounds like it). Good Lord!Avatar ImageNeil in Scotland says: That all sounds so good!Avatar ImageMatea says: I think 30 minutes is perfect! everything fits in 30min. and I still think that the end of part 1 will be Silver doe! fingers crossed!Avatar ImageethanHP says: I'm happy they'll have Harry fighting back. One of the things I haven't liked in the 5th and 6th movies is how they don't let Harry fight. In OotP Harry saves them in the MoM, but in the movie they let that to Ginny... and in HBP they did the same, they let Ginny, and even Hermione, seem stronger than him, which is stupid. I'm a litttle tired of how the writer gives the boys actions to the girls. Ron's things to Hermione and Harry's things to Ginny.Avatar ImageDanielaNC says: Very interesting.Avatar Imagesinwillys822 says: i am glad that they are going to have the battle in the movie i think 30 mins is a good amount of time. Avatar ImageRoonil Wazlib says: You guys know if it's Mark Day who's editing the battle he's gonna ruin it! Avatar ImageTschudiff says: I so hope that they get the end of the book right, because it has so much emotion, but 30 mins of battle sounds good. Avatar ImageZiadM says: Should be longer than 30 minutes!!!Avatar ImageLadyCake says: I figured the final battle would be between 30-45 minutes, so I'm satisfied with 30 minutes. Though....if you could draw it out a tad longer...to maybe get in a few smaller details that'd be cool. I just can't wait to see Snape's memories. If they don't put that in, I will definitely be disappointed. That is Snape's (Alan Rickman's) moment to shine, and what I've been waiting for since I read DH. It has to go in for no other reason than to tell Harry what he has to do to defeat Voldie. Avatar ImageIwishIwas@Hogwarts says: This movie...or movies i should say...are it! I mean this is it. They cant screw this up. We cant say oh well maybe they will put more in the next film. Nope..end of the line folks. Im sooo nervous that they will cut out too much. 2 part movie or not. This movie should be a tribute to Jo's fans. We've dealt with years of cuts and explainations why...this cannot be that way!!! Too big a moment for Harry. Too big a moment for us all! 30 minute fight scene...if as he says...only includes fight...doesnt sound too bad. Now changing up things like Harry fighting back..which who knows what he means or to what extent...i dont think that should be messed with. This whole doing it for cinematic purposes...BS!! This is OUR movie! Leave it alone. Its perfect the way it is. U are splitting it to fit what needs to be there in there so leave it be. It will be perfect the way it is for movie goers! Now im just ranting and my apologies fellow leaky friends. Just this one is hitting a nerve for me. So worried about it!!Avatar Imagecallicott3 says: Very good...a battle scene, no matter how "grueling" has to be timed.....if it's tooo long, it loses it's impact! I can't wait! I am sooo glad they are taking the time to sort this out...so it works. The Page, as written, doesn't always "work' as it should. But it can be arranged to be effective, and work on screen,,,and still not lose it's content!Avatar Imagesuperman82 says: I to think DH will be Snape's moment to shine, but with the thought to center everything around Harry I worry it won't be put in. It would be crazy not to because it's such a pivital and revealing moment for the character. Avatar ImageHagrid 713 says: I hope they do the Collectors Edition justice and have a lot of out-takes and behind the scenes stuff as well as deleted scenesAvatar Imagegoodenough says: Wow! That fantatisc news, I can't wait for that sceen. Avatar Imagebengtson_98 says: Ooooh I am excited!Avatar ImageRin68nyr says: Yeah! Already starting with the DH interviews! Now we can start getting excited about that! ErinAvatar ImageMr. Brightside says: I'm quite freaked out actually. If they dare to change even the smallest of details i'm gonna hunt them down for the rest of their lives. We had to watch so many stupid scenes in the previous movies that had no relation to the book, so they better don't mess with anything from DH and especially the forest scene! Why everyone has to be an "actionman" hero? I don't want to see Harry fight back, he is supposed to have seen so many friends die, he must be emotionally wrecked not going around throwing spells. Merlin's pants! Let's hope for the best.Avatar Imageluna.quibbler says: very cool! i love david he's great =DAvatar ImageKirsikka says: good, good, very good! I especially can't wait for the battle scene, and the after 19 years scene. Avatar ImageNeville Fan says: Presume that 30 min doesn't include the build up to the battle, search for teh lost diadem etc so all in all a pretty lengthy part of the film will bge spent at Hogwarts. :)Avatar ImageEmilyDeibert says: 30 minutes - yes! Hopefully that'll make up for the - SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER -lack of battle in HBP.Avatar Imageshellscotie says: I'm uncomfortable with the idea of Harry fighting back Voldemort. but never mind I'll just wait and see. it might be good on screen.Avatar Imagemugglemom4 says: I think it's going to be great and I am not really worried at all. It's going to be great!Avatar Imagebeewell says: Guess we will just have to take what they do. Harry fighting back is in the books but he doesn't do that much since he is looking for the horcruxes or one I should say. Having the battle only last 30 minutes isn't much but I'll take what they give us. So thrilling to have something about the last two movies but rather sad knowing this will be it...no more Harry after the last part. Wish it could last forever!Avatar ImageNot Slytherin says: Can't wait!Avatar Imageevannaa says: 30 minutes is pretty cool :).Avatar Imagesueml says: I do not read David Heyman's comments the same way many people seem to be. I agree with the person a couple pages back (yes, I read the previous comments prior to making my own) who believes that David Heyman is talking about the actualy fighting in Hogwarts - this is the area where they will probably have Harry fight back. He even specified that there were two parts to the battle, before the forest scene, and after the forest scene. This implies that he does not consider the forest scene itself as "part of the battle." It is a separate, stand alone scene which I am sure they will try to be as faithful to as possible. Heyman, Yates, and Dan Radcliffe have all previously discussed what an important scene that is and how emotional it will be. I'm sure when he discusses "Harry fighting back", he means in the actual "war" scenes. I also agree. Harry's a good wizard - the best at defense against the dark arts for his age - right (even becomes an auror)? We should finally get to see him fight - I always wished the books had more of Harry fighting. Plus, from a purely movie sence point of view - they have to have Harry/Dan Radcliffe as the talented wizard hero. Anyway - don't worry so much. People are going nuts already and the last movie is only 2 days old!Avatar ImageHermione_Granger1987 says: I hope it will be epic!Avatar Imagetonksgirl says: sounds pretty good.. 30 min!! i would like 500 minutes but im satisfied xD but yea harry fighting back, not sure about that.. they have to make so that Voldy dies bc his own curse backfired, thats the whole point, so Harry's soul isnt damaged. hmm.Avatar Imagex_Potter_Lover_Forever_x says: YAY! I can't wait for DH part 2!!! It's going to be sooooo good! XDAvatar ImageMidnightSun321 says: YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 30 mins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! the battle is epic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! cant wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Avatar ImageAndreaB09 says: Wow - that was very juicy - now i just want the trailer to come out! arrggh!Avatar ImageMooChild says: I hope the battle has some pretty intense music and effects to compliment it! As well as some camera work... there's nothing more thrilling than dramatic music, perspective, and wandplay put together!Avatar ImageHinkypunkmum says: Like everyone else, I am hoping they are refering to the post-sacrifice battle. Yes, let Harry kick some major butt there...after seeing all that death, absolutely !!! But leave the sacrifice scene alone, untouched, unmodified and pure. Avatar Imagezoltan42 says: I can kinda see where they're coming from for the final, final battle with Voldemort. It reminds me a little of Jaws. In the book the shark pretty much just dies, that all of the barrels and spears finally work. (Granted it's been years since I've read the book.) Cinematically, that real doesn't work. After two hour you really need something with humph, so they came up with the exploding air tank. Of course, one problem with that is -- air tanks don't explode. They tried it on Mythbusters, and it becomes a projectile propelled by the air escaping from the bullet hole. Looked great on the big screen, though.Avatar Imageminishiva says: I hope it will be good.Avatar Imagelinnie95 says: soo cool can't waitAvatar ImageGTHunter says: great!!Avatar ImageRobbie Rowe says: Good!!! Hope the battle rocks!!! I would say that it will.Avatar Imagelevi-OH-sa not levio-SA says: sounds good to me...tho i am going to try to hold off on exciting myself too much...i am going into it with no expectations...i feel like we cant enjoy the movies for what they are if we build them up Avatar ImageElwood J. Blues says: It's at the point now where if they do the battle well, it will make the second movie the best Harry Potter movie ever, if they do it poorly, everyone will feel jipped when they leave the theatre. I have confidence in the director and producer. They should get it right.Avatar Imagebig_pale says: To the fellow wanting to see a trailer: I would expect the first one to show up for the Twilight:Eclipse movie (that comes out in late June). There may be a teaser earlier in the year, and I would definitely expect something to be on the DVD/blu ray this Christmas, but that's it.Avatar ImageTamyris says: 30 minutes of fighting? Wow! that´s awesome!!! Cool cool cool!!Amazing! The final battle is one of my favourite parts ever!!!Avatar Imagegrawp08 says: 30 minutes of following Harry around with a handheld camera during the battle is going to be so awesome!Avatar Imagedoublecore says: I hate to be the one that says i can wait. But i can really wait until the end. I am going to see HBP again saturday on IMAX and hopefully my sister wont cry again. DH will be awesome and SPOILER ALERT !!!!! maybe there will be an epic battle since we didn't have one in HBP :)Avatar ImageDottie says: that sounds ok to me :)Avatar Imagetina_als_girl says: My thoughts on DH1 is that they could replace the wedding with DD's funeral. I mean, if the majority of the Wizarding World is at DD's funeral, they can easily have whoever was at the wedding be there and still give the same info (ie Skeeter's article, etc). Perhaps, then, they'll have the DE's attacking people at the end of the funeral, and... well, I'm almost imagining they may actually cut the whole "Polyjuiced Harry" and just having the injuries/deaths that occur during that occur during the DE attack. Then the Trio goes on the run. But now that I think about it... I don't think that's going to be the case, based on BTS pics. I wonder if they'll turn Bill/Fleur's wedding into a Lupin/Tonks wedding.Avatar Imagejenge says: Sounds promising. Let's hope that scene lives up to our expectations.Avatar Imageweasleyalltheway says: excellent! i really hope they do it justice!Avatar ImageHermione Elizabeth says: Awesome! :)Avatar ImageHermione Elizabeth says: Awesome! :)Avatar Image8th Horcrux says: I hope they keep in the line by Mrs. Weasley when Bellatrix attacks Ginny...that will be a crowd pleaser and especially sets up Mrs. Weasley exacting revenge for the damage to her family by Death Eaters, and the destruction of the Burrow. I agree with Tina_als_girl about the wedding change...combine the overt nature of the Lupin/Tonks relationship in HBP movie ("Sweetheart?") and no Burrow to host the Bill/Fleur wedding, and you may be on to something.Avatar Imagefngw417 says: See the excitment is building here and HBP still in the plans for this weekend. It is so good to be a Potterite right now!Avatar Imageharrypottergirlll says: YAAAAY! :)) two part-battle :) Avatar ImageRemus_Rocks says: Yay, I'm glad it wont be too long, but it would be cool seeing a full on wizarding battleAvatar Imagehewy says: Are they not going to film the Epolog??? Did anyone think to ask him? I do hope they don't screw up the battle too much!Avatar ImageDanielleD says: cool. i just hope they don't change it from the book too much. and i don't know about the Harry fighting back at all . . . Avatar ImageDanielleD says: cool. i just hope they don't change it from the book too much. and i don't know about the Harry fighting back at all . . . Avatar Imagetina_als_girl says: As far as I know, they're doing the Epilogue. There have been several articles where they talk about how they're not going to re-cast the Trio for the end of DH.Avatar Imagelupinwandcaster says: Sounds a little too short, they should make it long if they're making 2 movies.Avatar ImageHPandtheDA007 says: as long as they put everylittle detail in , i'll be fine with it. Avatar Imagetayler18 says: amazinngg!Avatar ImageLizbit says: Honestly the movies could be six hours long and I'd happily sit thru the whole thing! Avatar ImageLizbit says: And I mean six hours each.Avatar ImageSindi says: Cant wait!! Should be awsome!!!!!Avatar ImageSindi says: soooooooo excited!! Avatar Imagecghambright says: I think when David Heyman says that Harry will fight more than he did in the book...I think he means during the actual battle. Not on the part when he's walking through the Forrest to sacrifice himself. I HOPE part two is like 3 hours long. I can handle that. The last LOTR was like 3 hours and 20 minutes, so I can definitely sit through a movie that's over 2 1/2 hours! *fingers crossed!*Avatar Imagesueml says: I read an interview with David Heyman where they asked how they were going to do Dumbledore's backstory since in the book Harry just reads it in his head. He says they are going to do alot of it at Bill and Fleur's wedding in the beginning with Elphias Dodge and Ron's Aunt. Hermione finds the book and reads it (so that will be changed because the book is released at the wedding). Interviewer then asks - so it's Bill and Fleur's wedding? Heyman says "yes". Interviewer asks - how do you introduce Bill since he's been absent. Heyman says - it's evident it's there wedding because everyone talks about it and it's at the Weasley's. Interviewer asks - has he been attacked by a werewolf? Heyman says: "yes". Can't remember where I read it as there's been so many articles lately - it was likely either this site, or Snitchseeker. So - there is a Bill and Fleur wedding most definately. Also - already said this, but again @cghambright - my thoughts exactly about what Heyman meant re: Harry fighting more.Avatar Imagetina_als_girl says: Ah, okay. Hadn't seen that interview.Avatar Imagesueml says: Here's the interview: www.snitchseeker.com/harry-potter-news/exclusive-snitchseeker-interview-david-heyman-imelda-staunton-return-confirmed-65784/Avatar Imageoldenoughtoknowbetter says: I hope they don't change the final battle too much... there is a reason for Harry not to fight back... of course, maybe I don't really have a clue as to what he's really talking about!Avatar ImageBeAchL0veEr05 says: 30 minutes? Hm... that's good I guess. Of course I would like to watch 2 hours worth of a battle, but I understand everyone doesn't feel that way (like movie only viewers)... Harry did NOT get the blank beaten out of him, and now I'm verrrryyy scared about how the end of the seventh movie will be if Heyman thinks like this!Avatar Imageoldenoughtoknowbetter says: Guess it's time to re read DH!Avatar Imagekiwimci says: Sounds like a split around Shell Cottage time to me. Otherwise there's no way they could fit a 30 minute battle sequence including build up. Plus didn't he say the 1st 60 days were filming for part I. So was the shoot in Wales within the 1st 60 days. I love Heyman he gave alot of detail here. I love the way at WB they're not really keeping tight lipped, they're just really excited. I'm so glad we got the filmmakers we did to make these films, in the past couple of years the series has really hit its strideAvatar Imageempressa says: 30 minutes isn't so bad. it's all about what you DO with the time. i'm sure it will be great. either way, i'll still support it.Avatar Imagegeminidreamatl29 says: I read the entire interview and I was so blown away at how candid David Heyman was and all the info he shared about Deathly Hallows which im more excited about then anything. im praying we get a trailer on the HBP DVD. according to the interview 94 days of shooting have already finished so they almost have enough for a whole movie. just got finish the other one. deathly hallows is my favorite book and im overly excited its being made into two movies so nothing much will be omited. but i think the entire battle should be more than 30 minutes. what concerns me is he said not long after the second movie starts is the battle. um, what about the scene with aberforth? the ravenclaw common room? the room of requirement with nevell? and what about the gringots break in?Avatar Imagecghambright says: @sueml: THANKS for the interview! This is awesome! Avatar ImageWingardium Leviosa says: Though HBP has come out, I can't wait for DH!Avatar Imagemynameisbrock says: genius ;) really looking forward to seeing it. was kind of let down not seeing a huge epic battle at the end of HBP movie but this could make up for it.Avatar ImageFlower says: If I had my way, it would be four hours. But thirty minutes will do!Avatar Imagewandmastercalum says: WTF!! Why are so many people spamming!!! Is this for points! Pathetic!!!!!! Anyway this sounds good. Harry getting his but kicked? Well as long as he doesn't get dragged down to the forest instead of walking down bravley. Avatar ImageMaryiam says: Cool!!!!!!!!Avatar Imageenchantedsocks says: Wow! HBP is barely 4 days old in the cinema and already people are up in arms about the ending of DH part 2. I assume that Heyman means that there will be 30 minutes on actual battle (i.e. wand combat etc.) and 'The Forest Again' and 'The Prince's Tale' will be separate. He does mention there is a lot of build up before the battle happens. As a comparison point - how long were the battle scenes in Return of the King?Avatar Imagetarotx says: I'm not worried about the movie. I loved Half blood prince and I know they will do Harry's story justice in the Deathly Hollows. Avatar Imagecesca says: yes! im so excited but we have to wait 2 years for this =[ its definitely worth the waitAvatar Imageravenclawguy1972 says: sounds like its going to be very good :)Avatar ImageThe Stew says: Very cool! I am soo stoked for it...if only it was sooner. But the last two movies being within 7 months of each other is pretty tight!Avatar ImageThe Stew says: Very cool! But the last two movies being within 7 months of each other is pretty tight!Avatar ImageSindi says: cant wait to see what it looks like... i hope that they keep it as similar to the book as possibleAvatar ImageSindi says: i know that this movie will meet all of our expectations :D and i know that it will be the best one out of all, the book is great so no doubt this movie will be greatAvatar ImageSindi says: i just cant wait to see it! :DAvatar ImageSindi says: wooooooo! deathly hallows!!!!!!! :DAvatar ImageThe Stew says: http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/myleaky/groups/6380 Avatar ImageThe Stew says: Man, I will have almost finished my first semester in college before DH pt 1 comes out...ahh! I am soo ready!Avatar Imagetina_als_girl says: It is rather ironic for myself. I got into HP at the very beginning of my last semester of high school. By the time DH2 comes out, I'll have just graduated from college with my bachelor's degree (I took three school years off between my sophomore and junior years of college; going back in the fall). That's why I'd LOVE to go to LeakyCon 2011--a perfect way to celebrate being the first of my grandparents' 12 grandkids to earn a BA!Avatar Imagevineethtc says: What I love most is that though we may not always agree with the choices they make, Heyman and Yates really seem to get HP. And honestly, I couldnt ask for two more passionate people to be in charge of the last two films.Avatar ImageRavenclaw98 says: awsomeAvatar Imagebiswajit says: I will want a bit more if it is one hour alsoAvatar ImageExAstrisScientia says: I think 30 minutes is great. I don't think people realise how long that is in a movie. I just hope that, when they said Harry would fight back more, they meant in the general battle, and not during the forest scene. I'm usually cool with the changes they make but it really wouldn't make much sense to have Harry go in and die fighting Voldemort, if it's meant to be a sacrifice, and if he knows he must die. I think Heyman is smart enough to figure that out, so I really think he meant during the general battle. Perhaps fight off a few Death Eaters while searching for the diadem, or something.Avatar ImageTheWanderer244155 says: Oh god i can't wait for the second part!!! the battle is going to be amazing!!!!Avatar ImageTheWanderer244155 says: OH! And when Mcgonagall and Snape duel!!! OMFG!!!! THAT"S GONNA KICK ASS!!Avatar Imagedumbledore592 says: I wish they would not change things so much!Avatar Imagedumbledore592 says: I wish they would not change things so much!Avatar Imagedumbledore592 says: I wish they would not change things so much!Avatar ImageNosebleed Nougat says: Sounds good but it kind of is reasonable that Harry would fight back to try to get that last try before dieing and so that Voldemort isn't suspicious that Harry's up to something - but you know it's in the book where he doesn't fight so it should be that way. But as long as Harry comes back in the movie it's all good lolAvatar ImageNosebleed Nougat says: Sounds good but it kind of is reasonable that Harry would fight back to try to get that last try before dieing and so that Voldemort isn’t suspicious that Harry’s up to something – but you know it’s in the book where he doesn’t fight so it should be that way.
