Reading of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying with Dan Radcliffe Takes Place in NYC

Dec 22, 2009

Posted by EdwardTLC has a report online from a private reading of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” featuring actor Dan Radclliffe (Harry Potter) in New York yesterday. As readers will recall, rumors first surfaced of Mr. Radcliffe’s involvement in this reading via a report in Variety Magazine last October. Today, the report, available to read here, goes through the audience members first impressions of the reading, which notes that Mr. Radlciffe was “amazing.” The article goes on to say, “[Radcliffe] interpreted the role in a charming, adorable and fresh way. He sang great. I think everyone was there to see if he could do it. And boy, he really did it. He was great. He came off as a full-fledged musical star.” Mention is made of Mr. Radcliffe’s fellow actors, which included Rose Sezniak, David Hyde Pierce, Michael Urie, Mary Faber, Lewis Stadlen, Nancy Opel, Don Stephenson, and Renee Goldsberry. Of the overall performance of the musical, the report says, “The show seemed not out of date or old fashioned because of the state of the economy and what the world of big business has been going through recently. And there is renewed interest in this period because of Mad Men.”

Please note, no official word has been given regarding a place on Broadway for this show. Stay tuned to Leaky for updates.

Thanks to Lauren and!

For those who don't know, Jo Loesser (who attended the reading) is the widow of Frank Loesser, who wrote the music and lyrics to "How to Succeed..." (as well as many other shows, of course). According to this site ( she was "instrumental in having ... 'How To Succeed in Business…' revived on Broadway" back in the 90s (that one featured Matthew Broderick in the starring role). She seems to have loved this reading, so here's hoping that she can work some magic again!Avatar Imagejasmineflower27 says: never knew he could sing, that should be interesting to hear :) i bet he's great!!! and now it looks like 2 actors on the HP movies can sing, him and Tom Felton (who is REALLY talented). i wonder who else can sing on that set :)Avatar ImageThe Hufflepuff Giraffe says: Wow. I really, really, really want Dan to do this. Would be so amazing! Also, @jasmineflower27, I'm pretty sure Emma can sing & used to do so at family weddings or something. Avatar Imagemuggle118 says: excitinAvatar Imagealpaca-girl says: cool!!! :o)Avatar Imagealegria35 says: it would be quite nice to watch Dan sing.. lolAvatar ImageCatherine says: wow! does everyone in the show business sing? i mean look at disney channel! every character/actor/actress on that chanel can sing! i cant wait to hear Dan's Golden Pipes!Avatar Imagejlinhard03 says: I hope it goes to Broadway w/ Dan in it. I live only a few hours away!!!!!Avatar ImageWendelin the Weird says: Woo, exciting! Good luck Dan!Avatar ImageNundu says: *sigh* This is such a fun show. I did it in Germany twenty years ago playing Miss Jones. joginny1994 *SQUEE!*, yes, pretty much if you're in show business you learn to sing. A lot of that comes from the voice lessons you take to control and project your voice for stage work gives you the basics for good singing control. Mind you, some people just have a tin ear and can't carry a tune, but that's a rare person. Show tunes are better sung by those who could never sing opera. You need a clear tone without a lot of vibrato for your voice to do well in Broadway style singing. That way the audience can hear the words clearly, as the songs typically advance the plot as much as the dialogue.Avatar ImageNot Slytherin says: I wanna hear Dan sing!!! WOOT! Tra-la-la!Avatar Imagejeannemcl says: Is there anything this young man can't do? No, he can pretty much do it all.Avatar Imagecheeserpleaser says: This sounds like it would have been marvelous to see! I hope that additional media from this event soon surfaces.Avatar Imagehrhgnl says: It is great to hear that Dan might be coming back to Broadway. The article shows the range of talent Dan has and that he will be acting for a long time. I wonder if Rupert has considered doing Broadway. Avatar Imagewandmastercalum says: Lol Dan singing??? xDAvatar ImageWON_TWO says: Cool news...Avatar ImageethanHP says: joGinny, actually, most Disney actors and actresses can not really sing, have you heard them signing live? They are terrible, the only good one is Demi Lobato. The rest only sounds good when their voices are digitally changed for their tv shows and cds. Even in a show like Glee only 4 of them can really sing well. In a musical you have to sing live so it means Daniel can really sing well. And it's not something as easy as pop, like other HP actors do, musicals are very difficult. Think about how many actors from the old cast have been in musicals? And I don't mean movies, where they can have their voices changed. I don't remember a single one who has, which proves not many people can actually do it. Dan has been taking lessons and working hard to learn, so I don't know why some of you find it funny, just because you have never heard him. It only proves, despite been the most famous teen actor in the world, he is quite unknown. He doesn't only work every day in the HP films, he continues to study and even works in his holiday break, I find it admirable, he is completely underrated. Bandersnatch, thanks for the info, it looks like she loved it and that must have been very emotional for everyone.Avatar ImageGraymayne says: This is very interesting news! I remember seeing an interview in which Dan said that he would love to do a musical on Broadway. I am thrilled that he made such a good impression.Avatar Imageharrypotterlover711 says: I did this show last year for my school musical. It's such a great show! I'm sure Dan's going to do great as Finch. I would absolutley LOVE to see him perform in this show on Broadway!Avatar ImageZephyrFool says: Break a leg, Dan!Avatar ImageDiamondWings says: cool!
