Deathly Hallows to Be Shot Using "Loads of Hand-Held Cameras," Tom Felton Talks Sectumsempra in Half-Blood Prince

Last month, we first told you cinematographer Eduardo Serra would be the DoP on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. He is noted for his work on action packed films such as Defiance and Blood Diamond as well as the gorgeous and stylistic Girl with a Pearl Earring, which earned him an Oscar nomination for cinematography.  In a new interview found in the May Issue of Total Film magazine, Deathly Hallows film director David Yates confirms the type of work Mr. Serra will be doing and the type of look the two final films will have as he noted Deathly Hallows will be more naturalistic "with loads of hand-held cameras. I want to shake things up every time I go into this world. I like experimenting as we go along."

David Yates also gives high praise to cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel, the Director of Photography on the upcoming Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, remarking on his work in the movie: "The choice of angles, the extreme close-ups, the pacing of the scenes...It's very layered, incredibly rich."

Also of note in the magazine are comments from actor Tom Felton on the infamous Sectumsempra scene in Half-Blood Prince. Tom says of the emotional confrontation between his character of Draco Malfoy and Harry Potter (Dan Radcliffe): "It was great. We spent a week in this misty bathroom set, rolling around in the water having all sorts of fights. Its a longer sequence than it is than in the book." The article continues: "There is blood-but also some fleshing out. This film develops the character further than before," he says. "We take the chance to explain why he's such a complete cretin, that he's not just doing it for the sake of doing it."

You can read more, including new remarks from Dan Radcliffe on missing Gary Oldman (Sirius Black) as well as a side piece from Emma Watson here via the Total Film website.

Thanks much for the link Chris!

The Sectumsempra sequence sounds awesome!

But I hope they don’t overdo it with the hand-held camera stuff – that could just distract from the real story, and the story is what matters, not experimental effects. The effects should serve the story, instead of the story justifying using fun effects.

I cannot wait to see how they have expanded upon the Sectumseptra scene. I also cannot wait to see all of the cinematography.
