The Associated Press has just released a new article with the current world-wide box office for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince: $396.7 Million. Breaking the numbers down, the AP reports HBP ” took in $79.5 million domestically over opening weekend and $159.7
million since debuting last Wednesday, according to estimates from
distributor Warner Bros. on Sunday. The movie also took in $237 million overseas since Wednesday in 54 countries, bringing its worldwide total to $396.7 million.”

The piece continues:

“With some of the best reviews of any “Harry Potter” movie,
“Half-Blood Prince” was off to the fastest overall start in franchise
history. The sixth movie about the young wizard came in $20
million ahead of the last movie, “Harry Potter and the Order of the
Phoenix,” which grossed $139.7 million domestically in its first five
days two years ago. The new film had the second-highest start
ever for a movie premiering on Wednesday, trailing the $200 million
five-day opening for last month’s “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.”

Prince” already has surpassed the $157.3 million “Order of the Phoenix”
pulled in during its entire first week. By the end of its seventh day
Tuesday, “Half-Blood Prince” will be in the $180 million range on its
way to becoming the franchise’s first $300 million domestic smash since
the original movie, 2001′s “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,”
said Dan Fellman, Warner head of distribution.”

I liked transformers, but I think Harry Potter was way better!Avatar ImageJessBlogsBooks says: Nice. I don't care who it beats or doesn't beat... that amount of money is crazy! Well deserved. :)Avatar Imagehalf-blood-queen says: I hope it beats Transformers because that movie had more plotholes than a swisscheese(spelling?) but at least it was action packed. HBP was way better than Transformers. Avatar ImageHarryRichardsPotter says: I've seen it three times already. That's probably why it's gotten so much, because people are dying to see it again. I know i was.Avatar Imagegryffindor1991 says: WOWAvatar Imagekatana says: That is so awesome! And it still has yet to open in some countries doesn't it? Almost 400 million worldwide first week. That's fantastic!Avatar Imagegryffindor1991 says: Yeah who care what beat HBP. HBP is still the best movie until DH. Avatar Imagerehma love says: i'm so happy (: i can not wait till Deathly Hallows..i think it'll be even beter than HPB, which was an AMAZING movie. too bad we have to wait like 4 years for DH :(Avatar ImagePhylis says: That's great! Amazing as well. It's my favorite film so far! Isn't DH part 1 due out in 2010, with part 2 out in 2011? Avatar ImageFereverto says: This movie has me ACHING for Deathly Hallows which is bound to be a gigantic hit next year. I can't wait to own in on DVD! Avatar ImageRHrSoulmates says: @rehma love. We don't have to wait anywhere close to 4 years. DH part 1 is out a year and a half from now and DH part 2, a few days short of two years. That's really no wait at all.Avatar ImageRaveKatie says: HOLYYYYYY SH.....Woah. That is a pretty huge number. Wow.Avatar ImageRaveKatie says: HOLYYYYYY SH.....Woah. That is a pretty huge number. Wow.Avatar ImageBwaySaint says: It's only 11:30 on the West Coast - how they can they figure what it's made domestically if we still have the majority of the day left!? Either way, I think this is fabulous (and wish it would beat Transformers as well!) I think it should continue to do well! I've already seen it twice and plan on seeing it at least twice more (count one of those for IMAX.) :) Avatar ImageHydrus says: People at work are taking vacation days to see the movie.Avatar Imageminishiva says: People waited for so long that they just wanted to see the movie. The cast and crew deserve all the success.Avatar Imagex_Potter_Lover_Forever_x says: *WOW!* Holy poo!! That is a lot of money. Well, good for HP lol! :DAvatar Imagekiwimci says: Ha! So much for the opening week boycott. C'mon who was really gonna do it?! Shame HBP wont beat Dark Knight, that would have been incredible leading into DH. I do want DH to beat PS at the box office- well good luckAvatar ImagePeaceLoveWeasley says: Wow! I liked the movie, it made me laugh alot.. Especially the Weasleys. IT had some darn good special affects as well, so I wonder how much it took them to make it.. Overall, a great movie!Avatar Imagepotterphile34 says: HPB was a fantastic book, so much so that i read it 3 times...however, I was EXTREMELY dissapointed that so much of it was cut from the movie. I felt that with all the cuts, the movie made no sense (well it did to me because i read the book 3 times) but the plot holes in the movie were so big you could have driven a convoy through them. I have adored every singe movie up to now but they cut this book to ribbons. Where were Bill and Fleur? Where was the battle scene at the school? Why didn't they explain about the rest of the horcruxes? hagrid had 5 lines in the whole movie, Ginny had lines that were Hermoine's, they added ALOT of stuff that wasn't in the book (the burrow didn't burn down in the book) Where was the whole thing about the room of requirement and the fact that Harry his his book near Ravenclaw's Diadem (which we find out in deathly hallows). I am scared to see the next movies now because they really through HPB under the bus. Sorry folks but if you are a HP purist you have to admit I'm right.Avatar ImageBeAchL0veEr05 says: Sorcerer's Stone was the best! Honestly, I kinda hope it stays the #1 money earner! However, HBP was good, and I saw it twice on opening day! It's the sixth movie, so I'm hoping to see it six times before it comes out on DVD! Good job HBP! =]Avatar ImageFonty says: Well, the books are still intact. Nothing was cut from them. Book canon and movie canon are two different things. I have chosen not to weep for everything that wasn´t put up on screen (creating 6-hour-movies), but instead to appreaciate what we get to see. Surprisingly, a lot can be left our and still make a good film. Not everything in the books can be easily translated to visuals. This was attempted in the first two films and it shows, the constant "Look! It´s a magical world! Isn´t our art department great?!" didn´t really help the pace of the films. I´ve seen 6 twice now and I currently believe it is the best photographed and editied of all the 6 films (so far). One scene blends perfectly into the next, everything is connected and there is a thousand little great moments there. For the first time it is not about Visual Effects and Fantasy, but about characters. We do not need to see the moving staircase again, because we know it is there. We do not need to know everything about Horcruxes yet, because I´d like to find out in 7 and 8 when Harry does. The ending made me tear up the second time, it is still that moving. When I want to be movies by D´s funeral, I´ll read the section in the book. Avatar Imageliv-wa says: That is a LOT of money. The cast and crew earned it though [:Avatar Imageplacebowiz says: f yeah!Avatar ImageLiderc says: I thought the movie was great. I think people expect too much sometimes. My brother said, I wish they'd just not leave me hanging at one of these movies and I explained to him that they have to do that to continue making the films. If you want an ending, go see DH2 when it comes out. Comparing Transformers 2 to HBP is ridiculous, HBP was a much better film in comparison. I loved the first transformers, but the 2nd one was not nearly as good. HBP is a much better film than OOTP, so I feel they did their jobs.Avatar ImageJanitorOfAzkaban says: This movie is the best so far, truly a fantastic achievement. It felt so kind of natural and real, like they're really firing on all cylinders now. With the previous movies I've watched them once and and rarely gone back to them (okay, Azkaban was pretty good). But with this one, I think I need to see it about six times, because it was such an engrossing experience. @potterphile34 - you must be the fifty millionth person to notice that a 2hr movie cannot contain everything that happens in 600 pages. They have to rework it to make the most of the medium, a film is not a book. The Fleur stuff is funny, but that's all. That alone would have added an hour to the movie if it was all included! You may be an HP purist, but the fact is, a twenty-five hour movie wouldn't be as good. It just wouldn't. And anyway, I think they did a superb job of including chunks of dialog exactly from the book, just where they were most needed. The horcrux memory scene, for example. That was damn near perfect. And some of the stuff that was added this time, it was brilliant. Slughorn's story about the fish... the erasing of the dark mark, that sent shivers down my spine, and had way more emotional impact in a few seconds than it would if they'd cut to a funeral. And Harry's weird little Voldy-mannerism after he touches the ring. A brilliant moment. They also put all the guilt onto Harry, because he let Snape go to Dumbledore (just as, in the books, Hermione and various others did) which saved a lot of screen time.Avatar ImageDanielBonnie28 says: wow!! Harry Potter deserves it!! :)Avatar ImageBeazle says: Imagine how much more it would have grossed if it did not have such a stupid ending ! Avatar ImageMoose_Starr says: This is such a huge sum of money ... but SS/PS took even more. Like, wow :) Considering how Harry Potter possibly wasnt so well known back at the time of Movie 1 that's an amazing achievement. If I recall correctly, SS/PS was released around the same time as PoA (the book). The Potterverse wasnt as big a place back then, so it's incredible (and very cool) that the movie took so much. And, it's neat how HBP is doing so well, too :)Avatar Imagesianletley says: Not shocked Avatar ImageGarden State Geek says: That's amazing -- esp. since I wasn't all that jazzed. Avatar Imagemegan_702 says: darn it! it didn't beat transformers for the 5-day thing!! I think that people started to not care about HP as much because in the US, people like Twilight now and are totally obsessed with it!! :(Avatar Imagemegan_702 says: but i totally LOVED the movie!Avatar ImageMugglejeff says: Gryffindor’s need to roar!!! new group"Who was Harry’s greatest protector?"Avatar ImageEeyore says: I always get confused trying to make sense of the numbers. It seems to me that they play a lot of funny games when it comes to assessing how a movie is doing. But the article did get one thing right. The crowd that I saw at the midnight show was middle teens to older adults and very few really young kids. You could tell from listening to people and seeing them dressed up and holding their copies of Half-Blood Prince that they are long-time Potter fans. I went for a second time during the day (glad to help the numbers) and was surprised to see so many young kids in the audience. I've no idea if they liked it, but at least they were mostly quiet, except for the one crying baby. Grrrrr My general feeling is that I really liked this film. I think it's the best so far, even with the changes, some of which bothered me. And I'll likely go see one or two more times in the theater and then buy the DVD when it comes out.Avatar ImagePigwidgeonPwns says: Wowow!Avatar ImagePigwidgeonPwns says: Wowow!Avatar ImagePigwidgeonPwns says: Wowow!Avatar ImageLord Dumbledore says: i just wish they would put in the hogwarts battleAvatar ImageCrazy4Neville says: DAYUM!! if only it beat Transformers and the first HP movie, that would be CRAZY. but its great that it beat OOTP :)Avatar ImageJillxoxo says: Deathly Hallows is going to be insane!Avatar ImageMera004 says: YAY!!! :D Avatar ImageJavier J says: Wow, no one has mentioned that HBP has already grossed as much as twilight did during it's 19 weeks run. Now, twitards, tell me who owns who!!???Avatar ImageKissa says: Oh my god. You know, when numbers get that big I can't even comprehend them! It's a huge number, but it means nothing to me except "holy crap that's a lot of money!!". ;)Avatar Imageangelvoice says: This is so cool.Avatar Imagehws says: I am disappointed at the bandwagon mentality support for this film. As HP fans, we should be critical of anything that falls short of the mark, and I felt this film fell significantly short of the mark on delivering the breath and scope of the 6th book. It appears that Warner Brothers is betting on the sheep mentality of the HP fans, and threw out this actionless substitute for the public to dribble over. [And as far as competing with Transformers Action – it isn’t even in the ball park.]. I do appreciate that the actors demonstrated their true skills by saving this film which butchered the ploy and action that I so enjoyed from the book. The movie cut so much from the plot that few people other than potter fans could have made heads or tails about plot. I hope that the next film will worthy of the name HP, and not like this catastrophe.Avatar Imageharpsichordian says: I'm with Eeyore, the numbers don't make much sense. Especially when comparing with movies from previous years. For one thing, there's inflation - it costs more to see a movie now than it did even two years ago when OOP came out. When I saw that, a matinee showing was $7, for HBP it was $8.50. My landlord, who is 81, remembers when it cost a quarter to see a movie! It would be interesting if someone would do a comparison between the HP films and other high-grossing movies of the past - Star Wars, for example - with the numbers used being either the actual number of people attending, or box office receipts adjusted for inflation. I'm delighted that HBP is doing well - I've seen it twice myself. I loved it - think it's the best yet. The kids' acting just gets better and better, and Jim Broadbent was magnificent as Professor Slughorn.Avatar ImagePigmyPuffPie says: Good job cast and crew! I'm sure HP will do better than Transformers in the long run. Avatar ImageTheWanderer244155 says: WOW! Transformers may get whooped!Avatar Imagegot2lovme says: That's a lot of money. Wouldn't be amazed if their using it as toilet paper lol.Avatar Imagegirlatty1 says: We all knew they would make a ton of money.Avatar ImageJavier J says: "As HP fans, we should be critical of anything that falls short of the mark" hws As real Potter fans, whe are used to the changes between the books and the movies. Real Potter fans know that a 2hr movie cannot contain everything that happens in 600 pages, but i bet you think you are the first person to point out that the funeral was cut...Avatar Imageccking says: GOOOD JOB HBP! that's outstanding Avatar Imageender650 says: That is a huge opening half week, once again it is huge outside the US.Avatar Imageenchantedsocks says: I'd like to see a comparison too Harpsichordian. As ticket prices go up every year, it would be nice to see which film came out top when all the figures are adjusted for inflation/ you look at actual number of seats. That's why in the All Time World Wide Box Office Titanic is No. 1 but if adjusted for inflation it's actually Gone With the Wind.Avatar ImageShlesha says: No, no, no. Half Blood Prince has already beaten Transformers 2. Worldwide it has. Domestically, transformers beat it for the 5-day opening, but worldwide, Harry Potter has the spot. :) Avatar Imagefngw417 says: Wow...amazing to hear but not totally surprised. I will be adding to it of course when it comes to IMAX in my area. And the movie is wonderfully done too!Avatar ImageLemonFaerie says: That's awesome, but I totally wish it would beat Transformers, LOL, that movie really was not that great, just a lot of action scenes back to back and things blowing up. HBP was AWESOME! So come on, Potter fans, get thee back to the theater for another viewing! Avatar ImageVerity Weasley says: Fantastic!Avatar ImageWicked_Lady says: Yay! I'm so happy that the movie has done so well!!Avatar Imagecghambright says: WICKED!!! I've already seen it 3 TIMES and I'm going again today!! I'm so excited!!! :DAvatar Imageoldenoughtoknowbetter says: Excellent! Glad it did so well... the movie cost more than that to make! I'm sure it will continue to do well!Avatar ImageAegisSailor says: I've just now had the chance to go see the movie, and I was very, very disappointed. It seemed to me more of a collection of scenes that highlighted the key points of the book, than a smoothly-flowing movie story. What happened to all the action scenes? There wasn't any more than 30 seconds long! I overlooked all these missing scenes the whole way through thinking they were going to make up for it in the end with the DA patrolling the school while Harry was out with Dumbledore, and then for sure when the Death Eaters showed up. Nope. No action. The Death Eaters just calmly walked out of the school as if they had just been there for a parent teacher conference. I don't wan't full, non-stop action because I don't like those types of movies either, but I just want a good story told. Blah. Worst of the HP movies by far. Although I did love the Harry / Ginny scenes. Avatar ImageLulaL says: Yikes!Avatar Imagesuh says: wow Avatar Imagedeterminedflygirl says: Yippeee!!! I so glad the movie is doing so well. Come on three hundred million!!! I'm doing my part by seeing it in IMAX-3D tomorrow and then again when I get home to Minneapolis!Avatar ImageJadeDanielle says: Not surprising, but still amazing! Honestly, this is one of the best ones yet, in my personal opinion (though none of them can beat PoA). It definitely deserves the hype it's getting. That's a lot of money to rake in!Avatar ImageMartinisthechosenone says: if transformer did 200 millions first five day and hbp 396 there is way to beat transformers and dark knight too bellive me if otp did 140 in first five days give and in all 940 milion give half blood prince 200 millions plus 1 billion and more!!Avatar ImageMary11_hplvr4l says: boo. we didn't beat out transformers.. I almost had a bet going on..Avatar ImageMary11_hplvr4l says: oh yea..we beat twilight! :)) whoop whoop!Avatar ImageMartinisthechosenone says: IAM GIVING 2 MILIONS THAT HBP WILL BEAT TRANSFORMERS! STILL HAVE TIME!Avatar Imagehws says: "As HP fans, we should be critical of anything that falls short of the mark" hws "As real Potter fans, whe are used to the changes between the books and the movies. Real Potter fans know that a 2hr movie cannot contain everything that happens in 600 pages, but i bet you think you are the first person to point out that the funeral was cut… Javier J" Not at all - I believe that there were at least 3 other postings that realize scenes were cut, although I am not sure if you were one of them ...Avatar Imageiceymoon says: i can't believe that it won't pass Transformers. >< doesn't make sense to me. still doing great, though.Avatar ImageHermione Elizabeth says: AWESOME!!Avatar Imagebricat says: Astounding numbers. With returns like that I have a whole new appreciation for the cast and the pressure they have to make the movies really good. And I think they surpassed my expectations on this movie. It is by far the best in the series, and now one of my all time favorites.Avatar Imagecghambright says: @AegisSailor: They did leave out alot but I still think it was a very smooth flowing story and it was told brilliantly. Compared to the other films I think HBP cut out the most: the house elves, the Snape prophecy storyline, the Ron/Ginny fight, Harry getting knocked out by MaClaggen, the fight, the funeral, the Gaunt, Hepzibah, Dumbledore, Morfin memories, etc. But I still think they did a great job of capturing the overall tone of book 6. It's not an action-packed book. It's the calm before the storm and it's main purpose is to set up Deathly Hallows and that's what movie 6 does. I had a problem with the death eaters just walking out of the castle at first especially since they make a point of showing that the Aurors are guarding the school in the beginning of the film, but I think that's just going to make the battle much more impressive in Deathly Hallows. And it did make sense for them to leave calmly sense they did what they came to do (kill Dumbledore). The death eaters probably wanted to get out of the castle before the whole ministry showed up. And there is a scene showing them attacking the aurors. So I'm happy with the lack of a fight. And Bellatrix does destroy the Great Hall and Hagrid's hut so it's not like they left too quietly. I agree with you I thought the Harry/Ginny scenes were very sweet and sexy. Avatar Imagegeneliz says: amazingggg!! :D as long as it beats twilight fair and square, i'm good :$ bahahahaAvatar ImageBNana says: That is soooo great! Congrats!Avatar ImageTheGoldenSeeker says: i'm really happy for the HBP cast and crew. they did a brilliant job and deserve all the credit. i went to a midnight showing, and i plan to go see it again. but the two year absence had to have an impact on the number of people going to see it. either way, the movie was awesome!!Avatar Imagecallicott3 says: Fantastic!Avatar ImageNot Slytherin says: I'll contribute to the total by seeing it again this weekend. Harry!!!Avatar ImageGTHunter says: great!!Avatar ImageThat-Gryffindor-Girl says: Wow!! I REALLY hope it smashes all the records! It would be so cool to have it right at the top, especially considering it's THE BEST ONE YET!Avatar Imagechanman says: Haha funny story. The night i went to see the film i stopped to get some snacks at a store and i told the cash register lady that i was going to see a movie. She said "Let me guess, Harry Potter?" I said yeah. She was like "oh my gosh i hate harry potter transformers is way better." It was funny and i think she's actully one of those people who dresses up as harry potter and swings a wand in her closet and she's just hiding it.Avatar ImageLexitheAuror says: Way to go Half-Blood Prince!Avatar Imagemynameisbrock says: yay harry potter! screw transformers for sure. lets break some more records shall we?Avatar Imagelupinwandcaster says: ooh cash moneyiesAvatar Imageblockaderunner says: Just got back from seeing it again. Better the second time around!Avatar Imagegoldy91 says: lets just hope warner bros uses all that money to make the 7th movies as amazing as possibleAvatar ImageRose63 says: Got to see HBP. Can't wait for the DVD in December. I like to watch parts of it fram by frame. There is so much going on you miss things because you are following the main characters. Avatar ImageThe Azkaban Dietitian says: WOAH. Avatar ImageWolfyWizard says: This is amazing and great!Avatar ImageSindi says: one word :WOW!!! :DAvatar Imagedeadtree says: aww I wanted it to beat stinkin Transformers! But still, I'm glad it did well. It's just about gained back what it cost, so everything from here on out is profit :) I saw this movie twice, have plans to see it again, and can't wait for the dvd. So I guess my personal review is, two thumbs up!Avatar Imagelau399 says: Holy crap!!!!! thats amazing....Avatar Imagemissfan says: YAY!!!!!!!!!! Not bad at all...Avatar Imagehewy says: Well, looks like Warner Bros got what they wanted a "hugh boxoffice smash" and a great movie to boot! It was worth the wait!Avatar ImageCandyCane2304 says: I'm happy that I help with that record. Just imahine if I-max would have been opened all over. To me HBP still made money considering everyone couldn't seee it in I-max.Avatar Imageender650 says: I will be seeing this again either today or tomorrow (I'm still getting over a cold I had or I would have seen it again last weekend). We will see mor films come out and more work for all in the Movie industry.Avatar ImageMattOM93 says: Im not surprised, I saw it and already want to see it again, maybe a few more timesAvatar ImageJewunit says: Go Harry!Avatar Imageaxlgirl says: Woo-hoo! Way to go, Harry! =DAvatar ImageFigment says: We knew it would do great! Way to go HBP!Avatar ImageSnapesSilverDoe says: I finally saw the HBP last night and all my concerns over the return to Steve Cloves as screen writer are gone. What an amazing film - as a fan of the books I was not disappointed at this conversion to film. Awesome photography, good time given to all the key characters from the book, i.e. not just the kids. Alan Rickman and Michael Gambon were superb and their roles had the attention they so thoroughly deserved. Tom Felton had a very different role to play from the sniggering twit of previous films - being the biggest and most significant of the books for Draco it was Tom's chance to shine and I thought he was brilliant. Easily my favourite film of the franchise to date I am so pleased David Yates is there to the end.Avatar Imagerockstar5000000 says: Holy Hogwarts thats alotta money. Harry's gonna make the world rich. I saw the movie, it was awesome. It deserves that much money.Avatar Imagejediofthelost says: So that means they will for sure make the movies better then ever, hopefully.Avatar Imagesmgkkg says: Great movie!!Seen it twice so far!!!Avatar ImageKiralay says: Congrats to everyone at WB for this nice sum. It is well deserved.(And...hopefully this will teach the Twilight filmmakers not to publicly state they aim to make more than Harry Potter.)Avatar ImageApplepies465 says: I also wanna beat transformers. Because that movie sucked!Avatar ImageR-for-H says: WOW!! That is amazing!!Avatar Imagehermyone08 says: woo hoo! Go HBP! :)
