Yikes – There’s a few of us with the opinion that this has to do with honor. Some cultures (usually fundamental and not Western) allow men to kill women that dishonor them.

Good grief. To have your own dad and brother threaten to kill you? That is unbelievable, it’s like something out of a bad movie :(
I just hope that she wasnt hurt too badly, altho I guess the fact that she was assaulted at all by them is bad enough and, hurts a whole lot anyhows …

I think what we have here is a culture clash between a family seeking to uphold its patriarchal cultural and/or religious traditions and a young woman who has been exposed to much more Western values by working in the film industry. I’ll bet she was dating someone who hadn’t been vetted by the family. Arranged marriages are still the traditional practice among many South Asian families, and to attempt to choose your own partner may well have been seen as ‘dishonoring the family name’ – especially if the couple had been intimate or even just spent time together outside the oversight of a chaperone. Part of me is trying to be open-minded about not imposing my Western values on Eastern cultures… but the much-larger feminist part of me is screaming, ‘Smash the patriarchy, wherever it rears its ugly head!’

I hope that Ms. Azad finds safe harbor and a circle of friends who can provide emotional support at what must be a very difficult time, and that her father and brother eventually come around to seeing that what they did was wrong and make it up to her in some way so that the family can be reunited.
