The brother of Afshan Azad (Padma Patil) has been put in jail for assaulting Ms. Azad June of last year:

The brother of Harry
Potter actress Afshan Azad was jailed on Friday for six months for
attacking his sister after discovering she was dating a non-Muslim.

The actress, who now lives in London, had asked the court not to jail her older brother.

But judge Roger Thomas sent him to prison for six months after he pleaded guilty to the assault.

“This persistent attack was accompanied by serious and very hurtful abuse and threats,” the judge told the defendant.

“The
background to this offence lies in the concern that you, and perhaps
other family members, had about Afshan’s relationship with a young man
who was not of the Islamic faith.”

She obviously loves her brother still and knows what he did to we was wrong. I feel for her. Good luck Afshan! My prayers are with you and your family.Avatar Imagegryffindor1991 says: I really think he needs to be locked up for a least more than a year. there was no sense in what he did, he had no right to hurt her.Avatar Imagechanngalambeatrice says: Hope Afshan Azad will be alright.Avatar Imagekiwimci says: My thoughts go out to her, she must feel so conflicted but her brother was clearly in the wrongAvatar ImageExpectoPatronum512 says: My thoughts and prayers go out to her <3 It must be such a difficult position for her! He was in the wrong though, and I am glad that she is safe!Avatar ImageButterfly_Boy says: I remember the incident from last year. How sad the whole ordeal must be for her. Avatar ImageHarryPotterGirl (Hermione) says: Should be more then 6 month cuz that was really bad.Avatar Imagecloethebelatrixlover says: Oh my God that's sad. I definitely don't envy her situation. What religion can bring - good or bad.Avatar Imagehewy says: What everyone must realise is that while the brother pleaded guilty to the abuse he does feel perfectly justified to do so according to Shira (spelling?) Law by which muslims live and not by the laws of any western country in which they reside. We can only hope she remains safe. Many prayers to her!!!Avatar Imagegreenfinch says: I hope this is resolved soon. I'm afraid this will only foment anti-Muslim hate now, which is already so high especially in America. (Even though she doesn't live in America. But that's not the point.)Avatar ImageGiant Squid says: This must be so awful for her! But how terrifying!!Avatar ImageDennisVV says: ...Religion... -.-Avatar Image9em says: I feel bad for her. He did do something wrong, so concequences are consequences, i just hope he gets some parol though.Avatar Imagemoisenallie16 says: I feel so bad for her :( she must feel so confused and conflicted.Avatar ImageGryffindor_Girl_xx says: Aww, poor Afshan :( I hope she's OK ... :(Avatar Imagehufflepuff62 says: wow that's hard on the family. nice to know that she's okay thought!Avatar Imagewandmastercalum says: Hope she's okay :-) Avatar Imagespelljinxcursehexcharm says: Oh gosh. Why'd it take this long??!! She obviously loves her brother... but she can talk on the phone to whoever she likes! What did her parents do, the article only said they were "involved"? I just hope they don't all want her to only go out with a certain religion. Avatar Imageharmonyb says: I feel for her. she must be hurting and sad from what happend i know i would hope everything turns for the best later on.Avatar ImageTanderule says: Poor Afshan. Shame on her brother.Avatar Imageazaadpotter says: Serves him right. Poor Afshan must have been distressedAvatar Imagenealiezealbie says: i remember this from last year, i hope it is going to clear up now that he has been sentenced. i cant imagine going through that ordeal and then having to re-live it in court. also, its my ravenclaw showing but it should say "pled" rather than "pleaded." :/Avatar ImageSmitch says: That is sad and extremely frustrating to read. I hope she is safe from harm, and lives life to the fullest. Avatar ImageValeria-Johanna says: @Nealie Zealbie, it's your American showing, not your Ravenclaw. In the UK it's 'pleaded'. - another RavenclawAvatar Imagegexpert says: It's not wrong to have relationship with people of differences, as long as they like each other. She must be in a very difficult position. Avatar Imagejacket says: That's really horrible...I hope things turn out alright.Avatar ImageWeenyOwl says: I'm with you, Nealie Zealbie! As a longtime copy editor by profession, it drives me nuts how people nowadays just ignore irregular verbs: 'dived' instead of 'dove,' 'wreaked' instead of 'wrought,' etc. etc. For me, the English language is the biggest toy in the world (and it's free!!!), and I hate to see anything that seems to water it down.Avatar Imagehermioneginnyluna says: Yeesh. That's really sad. It would be very hard to be her. On one hand, he's her brother, but on the other, he hurt her and needs to be prosecuted.Avatar ImageValeria-Johanna says: Sorry, WeenyOwl, but these are cases where British English and American English are just different. 'Dove' as past tense of 'dive' doesn't exist in British English. I note that there are some cases where it's the other way round, e.g. 'slew' in British English where I've heard 'slayed' in American. In other cases, you are right, the irregular verbs seem to be being lost--I notice that 'thrived' seems to be taking over from 'throve'. All of this seems rather a long way from poor Afshan's troubles, which suggests that probably none of us really know any more about it than there has been in the rather brief newspaper reports.Avatar ImageWeenyOwl says: 'Slayed' and 'thrived' set my teeth on edge as well, V-J... Those are not Americanisms, they are just ignorance. I don't mind so much if the different forms are genuine regionalisms - it's when people just can't be bothered to learn the irregular forms that I sink into despair. And you're right, we've gone way off-topic! I try to keep an open mind about differences in cultural values, but when I hear about any so-called 'cultural' practice that oppresses women, whether it comes from East or West, I tend to go into vengeful Amazon mode. If I were in her shoes I think that I'd want to marry outside my religion just for spite, now!Avatar ImageValeria-Johanna says: Know what you mean (on both counts). All the best to Afshan. I hope that her Harry Potter work will give her the money and freedom to do what she needs to do, and that her family will come to accept this.Avatar ImageDDWatson says: Good that she is safe...her brother deserves to be put away..before things got worseAvatar Imagewildhogwartsgrlpotter4ever says: How awful. I will be keeping her in my thoughts and prayers. I agree with Jordan Steele, but I think that most HP fans are just cool and open-minded like that. The supportive comments are very contrasting to the negative comments you would see on a different site.Avatar ImageHarryPotter-Jk.Rowling says: That must be frightening for Afshan... All the bestAvatar ImageLiderc says: This is the problem with religion, anything that could warp one's mind so much, as to attempt to murder your own sibling, is astonishing. 6months? for attempted murder? I say give him 10 years to life like any other attempted murderer.Avatar Imageultraviolet says: it is so sad that in the muslim faith a woman cannot marry who she wants, it must be very disturbing for you if you really like somebody who is not muslim :(Avatar ImageMistic Willow says: Ok, I am glad that Afshan is doing Ok, and she must have felt awful when they arrested her brother, but on the other hand if something had not have been done, he might have done it again. It is a bit sad that they are not free to choose who they want to be with, but I suppose customs are customs, and not being of that faith, it would be very hard to criticise I do believe that the attack was totally not-exceptible and thank goodness that she was not hurt severly. Avatar ImageValeria-Johanna says: I don't think it's part of the Muslim faith, just a custom. But I'm sure there are plenty of Leaky members who could confirm this.Avatar Imagesinwillys822 says: Serves him right, he needs to learn from his actions but i fear for her when he gets out. Avatar ImageFresca says: I hope Afshan is safe and out of the family house. It sounds like her wishes don't matter much in that home. "Honour" killings have no place in a modern world, but sadly they still happen. Keep safe, Afshan!Avatar ImageDavidTheUnready says: very sad, its often said that Good people do good things, and bad people do bad things, but religion causes good people to do bad thingsAvatar ImageBlutiful says: I'm a Muslim, and I can't believe how wrong some Muslims act! It's a shame. Our holy book teaches us to LOVE everyone, not hate.Avatar ImageWON_TWO says: We have had far too many 'honor killings' occur here in the US over the last few years. One chilling common thread runs through each and every one of them. The killings are always committed by the father or brother of the girl, and the murderer is always unrepentant, and is convinced he did the right and proper thing, and would do it again. One other thing has been shown to be true, the girl involved, if she survives a first attack, must never be permitted to have contact with any of her adult male family members, or she will surely die!Avatar Imageharrysgirl09 says: I think with the stigma of their religion, Afshan's brother thought that she was a disgrace for even dating a non-muslim. Don't get me wrong though, Afshan is also a British citizen and has rights to her safety. I even think that Allah thought that a woman should marry for love. I wonder how hard the Azad family is taking this negative publicity. I am glad that even the celeberties are reconizing domestic violence as this incident was clearly was a clear case of it. It does not have to be with a boyfriend or spouse now a days it includes a sibling or a parent of the victim who is of age.Avatar Image1 fan eva says: so sad...Avatar ImageTunyevens says: I hope she'll be alright. I can't believe her brother did that, it's horrible!Avatar ImageTunyevens says: I hope she'll be alright. I can't believe her brother did that, it's horrible!Avatar ImageTunyevens says: I hope she'll be alright. I can't believe her brother did that, it's horrible!Avatar Imagesessionka says: I pray for her safety as well!!!Avatar ImagenoxiousCaitSith says: wow..so many things to say about this, but i'm sure they'd get modded..oh well..that's what happens when you try to be all politically correct about everythingAvatar ImagenoxiousCaitSith says: wow..so many things to say about this, but i'm sure they'd get modded..oh well..that's what happens when you try to be all politically correct about everythingAvatar Imagelunawannabe says: How horrible for her, my heart goes out to her completely. I really hope her family will be able to heal, and that she is able to feel completely safe and loved in her home, even after this. Can we please remember this was not the work of a certain religion or religion in general, but of one man. This crime was caused by intolerence. Let's not follow this guy's lead, people.Avatar ImageDobbyWinkyKreacher says: I'm glad her attacker was put in jail for the assault on his sister. too many men get away with abusing women. some of it is truly horrific with long lasting problems for the women who have been so badly abused. I hope she will be ok. Avatar ImageFiniteincantatum says: I do hope that Afshan Azad is okay!
