Entertainment Weekly’s Fall Movie Preview is not only a ‘magical’ double issue, but also features Fantastic Beasts’ Eddie Redmayne on the front cover!
Redmayne is joined by three (labelled) beasties: an Occamy, a Thunderbird, and a Niffler, with the beautiful 1920’s New York City skyline and the MACUSA seal in the background:
The release of Fantastic Beasts in November is fast-approaching, so EW is giving us an insider’s look at the ‘dark and topical’ plot of the film, featuring talks with the cast, crew and more:
“We pull back the veil on the ultra-secret film and reveal how Fantastic Beasts is going to be far more than just a magic-filled beast-chasing romp through Roaring Twenties Manhattan – the story is more dark and topical than you might expect. As costar Alison Sudol puts it: “There’s all kinds of things going on in our world right now concerning immigration and tensions between different groups. There’s a lot about segregation in this film, a lot about fear of the ‘other.’ These creatures, who the world sees as ugly, dangerous or weird, Newt has such love for them, and through his love we fall in love with them. J.K. Rowling has tapped into really deep and pertinent issues.” Plus, we learn how Redmayne mastered his wand, Rowling’s reaction to seeing the film for the first time, how a key beast was created, and more.”
Rowling’s stories have always included topical subtext – essays on Potter are full of analyses of the stories, as fans continuously delve into the more complex, “real world” issues in the stories that made our childhoods. Though Fantastic Beasts is also a Fantasy story, we’re glad that – like Harry Potter – it’ll continue to try to bring to light real issues in the muggle world.
