Daniel Radcliffe, who has been in the spotlight since before Harry Potter and Sorcerer’s Stone debuted, is set to star in the Public Theater‘s production of the play Privacy, Variety announced this morning.

Is the irony of such a popular entertainment icon featuring in a play called “privacy” in the “public” theater intentional?  Perhaps.  The tagline for the play reads,

Who are you? Are you the websites you visit, the music you download, the photos you post? Do you measure your value by your followers and your likes? Who’s listening to you? And whom are you watching back..?

According to Playbill, Daniel Radcliffe will play “The Writer,” a young man learning to balance sharing his life on the internet with keeping some things to himself.  (Followers of Radcliffe will know that he takes this pretty seriously in his own life.  Dan’s not very active on social media, only updating his pages occasionally.)  As part of the production, audience members are asked to keep their phones ON so that they can participate in the action.

The Public Theater says that Privacy, written by playwright Edward Graham, is based on leaks from Edward Snowden and interviews with British government officials and reporters.  It is directed by Josie Roarke and produced in association with the original producing theater, Donmar Warehouse in London.  Other featured actors include De’Adre Aziza, Raffi Barsoumian, Michael Countryman, Rachel Dratch, and Reg Rogers.

Privacy will run at the Public Theater in New York July 5-August 7.  Tickets for theater members go on sale soon, with single performance tickets available May 24.
