Pottermore has shared an interview with Eddie Redmayne, who plays Magizoologist Newt Scamander in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The interview focuses largely on the fantastic beasts themselves and questions Redmayne about his favorite magical creature.

The Pottermore Correspondent states,

“Actor Eddie Redmayne worked particularly hard on making his interactions with all the beasts in this film believable, moving and real. Like Newt, he knows he shouldn’t have favourites but he does.”

According to Pottermore, Redmayne named Pickett the Bowtruckle as his favorite beast earlier this year at the San Diego Comic-Con.

beast1

Bowtruckle is “a small twig-like creature that guards wand-wood trees”. An extract from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them describes the followingly:

“The Bowtruckle, which eats insects, is a peaceable and intensely shy creature but if the tree in which it lives is threatened, it has been known to leap down upon the woodcutter or tree-surgeon attempting to harm its home and gouge at their eyes with its long, sharp fingers. An offering of woodlice will placate the Bowtruckle long enough to let a witch or wizard remove wand-wood from its tree.”

During the filming of the upcoming movie, Redmayne opened up to Pottermore about his top three beasts, showing genuine attachment towards them. He says:

“It’s really difficult because I fall in love with different ones every day,’ he said. ‘Pickett is my favourite. Pickett I adore because he’s clingy and he’s got attachment issues but I also love that he’s so spindly and stick-insecty. You almost can’t see his face but he reacts through his movement.”

Redmayne tells he has a “wondrous love-hate relationship with the Niffler”, and thinks that Newt adores the ballsiness of the creature. According to Pottermore, Nifflers are “long-snouted, burrowing creatures native to Britain with a penchant for anything shiny”. An extract from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them describes them in following way:

“The Niffler is a British beast. Fluffy, black and long-snouted, this burrowing creature has a predilection for anything glittery. Nifflers are often kept by goblins to burrow deep into the earth for treasure. Though the Niffler is gentle and even affectionate, it can be destructive to belongings and should never be kept in a house. Nifflers live in lairs up to twenty feet below the surface and produce six to eight young in a litter.”

Finally, Redmayne names the Demiguise as his third favorite beast and tells Pottermore that the Demiguise appears in one of his favorite moments from the upcoming film. Pottermore describes Demiguises as “peaceful, ape-like herbivores with the ability to turn invisible when threatened.” An extract from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them states:

“The Demiguise is found in the Far East, though only with great difficulty, for this beast is able to make itself invisible when threatened and can be seen only by wizards skilled in its capture.

The Demiguise is a peaceful herbivorous beast, something like a graceful ape in appearance, with large, black, doleful eyes more often than not hidden by its hair. The whole body is covered with long, fine, silky, silvery hair. Demiguise pelts are highly valued as the hair may be spun into Invisibility Cloaks.”
