Upon the release of the Fantastic Beasts film and published script, Warner Bros has also released a mobile gaming app, Fantastic Beasts: Cases from the Wizarding World.  As we reported last month, the game is an interactive experience that Leaky speculated would be reminiscent of the old Pottermore. After having played the game, we can confirm that the mobile app does have a very old Pottermore-esque feel to it!

The object of the game is to look through and solve mystery cases–incidents of fantastic beast activity at different wizarding locations. Harry Potter fans will enjoy references to the wizarding world–both new (Fantastic Beasts) and old (Harry Potter)–with the names of beasts (such as Hippogriff and Occamy), locations (the Leaky Cauldron!), and proper nouns (Chudley Cannons).

These cases are solved by unlocking locations, finding items, collecting stars, stones, energy, galleons and points. Players also have to swipe their fingers along the screen to practice drawing out charms and spells.

Players gain stars, stones, energy, galleons, points, etc. by playing “I-spy” and collecting objects in crowded pictures. This has the most old-Pottermore feel. The first few levels are fairly easy and intuitive, though there are helpful hints and direction given along the way. As simple as this game may seem, it is strangely addicting. One can waste hours and hours unlocking new locations and higher levels.

There is often a “MinaLima” feel to periodic artwork throughout the game as well!
