After twenty-six days in theatres, Fantastic Beasts crossed the $200 million milestone, and is on its way to gaining over $225 million domestically.

Globally, the film has gained $684 million, which is a huge achievement. 70.8% of its box office earnings are coming from overseas. These are lower-than-average earnings compared to the Harry Potter series, but to some extent this was expected – the prior series had books and years to build an audience, and Fantastic Beasts was a minor shot in the dark (regardless of its amazing cast, crew and production team) given that it was based on a textbook! However, when you compare its overseas earnings to Deathly Hallows Part II‘s 71.2% overseas earnings, it’s not doing too bad in the global market, and for a $180 million film, it’s definitely a hit.

Forbes raised concerns that this new franchise could potentially get ‘first film’ syndrome, where viewers were excited to see a Potter ‘reboot’ and were potentially less interested in an entirely new story. Our readership begs to disagree – the interest in Fantastic Beasts has only soared higher than ever before since its release, with new fan art, cosplays, fan theories and fan fiction rushing into the online fandom world. Of course, it’s one thing to keep Potterheads interested (I mean, it was written by J.K. Rowling – we were obviously going to love it!) but a lot harder to draw in a new market. Here’s hoping that this series has managed to capture the imagination of the next generation, and promises to give them what Potter gave us!
