Viceroy’s House, opening in UK theaters Mar. 3, 2017, depicts the true story of the last months of British rule in India. The release is timed to celebrate the 70th anniversary of India’s independence and the subsequent founding of Pakistan.

The house is the literal central figure in the story, home to a long succession of British rulers in India. Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey) plays the last Viceroy to live there and the man who would oversee the transition of power and long-awaited liberation of a colonized people.

Bonneville stars alongside Sir Michael Gambon, well known for his performance as Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter series, and a cast rounded out by Gillian Anderson, Lily Travers, and Simon Callow. Om Puri, Manish Dayal, Huma Qureshi, Tanveer Ghani, Denzil Smith, and Neeraj Kabi also star.

Seenit summarizes the heart of the story:

“The film examines these events through the prism of a marriage – that of Dickie and Edwina Mountbatten – and a romance – that between a young Hindu servant, Jeet, and his intended Muslim bride, Aalia. The young lovers find themselves caught up in the seismic end of Empire, in conflict with the Mountbattens and with their own communities, but never ever giving up hope.”
