News, Oldman, Oldman Interviews

Gary Oldman stars in the upcoming science fiction romance, The Space Between Us, as NASA Director Nathaniel Shepherd. Shepherd is a bit of a recluse, who’s lost the will to fight for much of anything.

Known for playing Sirius Black in the Harry Potter films, Oldman is no stranger to portraying characters who have struggled with isolation and hopelessness, and he’s able to bring a sense of burdened familiarity to the role. So when Shepherd finally meets Gardner (Asa Butterfield), it ignites the long-dormant desire to stand up for something–and someone.

Gardner is born to a member of the first team commissioned to colonize the planet Mars. The pregnancy was a surprise, and his mother dies in childbirth. From that point on, he’s raised by scientists, without peers, without a sense of family, and without a sense of belonging.

Leaky previously shared this IMDb film synopsis:

“While searching for clues about his father, and the home planet he’s never known, Gardner begins an online friendship with a street smart girl in Colorado named Tulsa. When he finally gets a chance to go to Earth, he’s eager to experience all of the wonders he could only read about on Mars – from the most simple to the extraordinary. But once his explorations begin, scientists discover that Gardner’s organs can’t withstand Earth’s atmosphere.

Eager to find his father, Gardner escapes the team of scientists and joins with Tulsa on a race against time to unravel the mysteries of how he came to be, and where he belongs in the universe.”

Britt Robertson (Tulsa), Asa Butterfield, Carla Gugino (Astronaut Kendry), and Gary Oldman, recently discussed the central theme of loneliness–and how the entire thrust of the story rests on the viewers’ investment in the importance of finding hope again, whatever the cost. In another recent interview, Oldman shares more about Shepherd and his character’s journey in the film.

The Space Between Us is ultimately a story of personal growth and triumph that everyone can relate to. It opens in theaters February 3.
