Today we celebrate the 85th birthday of John Williams, composer of the iconic Hedwig’s Theme!

John Williams has given us a lifetime of excellent movie scores, from Harry Potter to Star Wars and Jurassic Park, it’s no doubt that we’re all a fan of this world-class composer’s work.

Warming up for his career with piano lessons throughout his childhood, John Williams began as a jazz musician, who studied at the Julliant School. He became a composer and began working on the music for TV series such as Lost in Space and Wagon Train. He’s moved to create legendary scores for Jaws and E.T., and he’s been nominated for FIFTY Oscars, the most nominations of a living person. He also has 22 Grammy Awards (after 66 nominations). He has been honoured by the British and American film institutes, marking the first time a composer has been honoured by the American Film Institute.

Check him out conducting at the opening of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Hollywood:

His work spans decades and generations, has touched the heart of millions, and we owe him so many thanks for creating the beautiful Potter theme song that makes us feel like we’re going home.

Join us here at Leaky in wishing this legendary composer a very happy 85th birthday!
