Of course, you already have all of the Harry Potter books.  But the only way to deal with the grief that there is no 8th book to wait for is to buy new editions.  Both the U.K. and U.S. publishers of the series are counting on fans getting their Harry Potter fix by periodically releasing them with new bells and whistles.  This time, it’s an illustrated series, with illustrations by Jim Kay. Kay is creating separate covers for the U.K. and U.S. versions, but the interior illustrations, of which there are over 100 per book, will be the same on both sides of the Atlantic.

Hermione_-_Jim_Kay_1_As previous reported by TLC, the illustrated version of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s/Philosopher’s Stone came out in 2015, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was released in 2016.  We’re up to Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, which will be released on October 3rd, but they won’t necessarily be available on an annual basis from here on out—subsequent books are far longer, if you recall!  The list price has thus far remained stable at $39.99.  You can pre-order the American editions from Amazon.com or the British versions from Amazon.co.uk.

J.K. Rowling said of Jim Kay:

“Seeing Jim Kay’s illustrations moved me profoundly. I love his interpretation of Harry Potter’s world, and I feel honoured and grateful that he has lent his talent to it.”

Pottermore interviewed Jim Kay about his inspirations for the characters, objects, and buildings in his illustrations.  There is also a delightful 5-minute video of Kay giving a tour of his studio and garden—with guest appearances by a variety of errant flora and fauna.

Alas, there are no previews available of the PoA illustrations, so enjoy this phoenix in the meantime and keep posted for updates!
