E-Online! has a surprising article mentioning that “See Spot Run” outpaced Hannibal this weekend. They think it was due to the Harry Potter trailer:
Despite terrible reviews, Warners can feel happy enough with See Spot Run, which scooped up an average $3,840 at 2,655 screens. The PG-rated doggie comedy starring David Arquette and a mutt was undoubtedly helped by its other costar–Harry Potter. Warners decided to showcase the first trailer for Harry Potter and Sorcerer’s Stone before Spot, which guaranteed a large turnout for fans of the book and helped Spot apparently beat Hannibal, pending final studio figures Monday.
I think Warner Bros. was smart and knew the movie wouldn’t gross much but also knew a lot of people would come to see the Harry Potter trailer.
