Paris is the “City of Light,” a beloved destination for travelers the world over–and 1920s Paris, as Woody Allen’s nostalgic Gil Pender knows in 2011’s Midnight in Paris, is truly magical. Yet those familiar with wizarding history, however well concealed from the Muggles and No-Majs passing them in the streets, know that 1920s Paris was also overcome by a great darkness as it bore witness to the rise of Gellert Grindelwald. And through Netflix Australia, you can soon bear witness, too!

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is the second installment in the new films from J.K. Rowling, which explore the sprawling and tumultuous backstory of infamous wizarding world characters such as Grindelwald, Albus Dumbledore, Nicolas Flamel and Newt Scamander. To these iconic figures first introduced in the Harry Potter series, Rowling adds No-Maj Jacob Kowalski, American sisters and Ilvermorny alums Tina and Queenie Goldstein, Newt’s longsuffering brother, Theseus, a ministry man through and through, and old flame Leta Lestrange, now engaged to Theseus and harboring a dark past of her own.

Rowling also brings back the mysterious and conflicted orphan obscurial Credence Barebone and introduces a name familiar to all Potter fans–Nagini. The trajectory of the story going forward seems to hinge on the fate of Credence and Nagini just as much as it does on the battle of wits and wands that will inevitably ensue for Dumbledore and Grindelwald. What remains to be seen is how all of these wonderful new characters and exciting new storylines merge to take fans from Paris to that fateful moment in 1945.

For now, it is enough to revisit Paris, experience Crimes of Grindelwald again and rehash the many questions and theories that arise–and Australian fans will be able to do that via their local Netflix branch next month! According to Pedestrian, the film comes to the streaming service on Sept. 13.

So, if you did not have the HBO add-on allowing you to view the film on Hulu this summer, Netflix is providing another chance through their ever-expanding catalogue! In the meantime, catch up on Leaky’s coverage of the many plot twists below so you’ll be prepared for your transport back to Paris next month.

We discussed alchemist Nicolas Flamel, his abilities in the art of Divination, his connection to Ilvermorny professor Eulalie Hicks and the intriguing golden book which may suggest they belonged to an early incarnation of the Order of the Phoenix.

Leaky poured over the parallels between Rowling’s Harry Potter storyline and the new series, comparing the impact of the cliffhangers, the orphans, the dark magic, the enchanted objects, the powerful and alluring campaigns for superiority–and more. We further analyzed Rowling’s penchant for great sacrifices and their import to the plot, as well as the prophecies which foretell–or seal?–the fate of the chosen.

There is also the question of the Blood Pact and the extent to which it constrains and directs the actions of Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald as they engage in that great chess match against one another, attempting to block and thwart plans through subtle and strategic means.

And, of course, we delved deep into what is perhaps the largest question raised by the film–what is the true identity of Credence Barebone? Has Grindelwald revealed a game-changing and shocking truth or told the greatest lie? Or is he blurring the lines of both and engaging in a twisted manipulation only Rowling can unravel in the films to come!?

Whatever the case, we’re hoping that Rowling has the answers to all of the mind-blowing plot twists in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, and we can’t wait to see what she has in store for Newt Scamander next–even if it means leaving Paris behind. We’re also hoping Netflix will take their cue from the wizarding world’s global expansion and release the film in other regions very soon as well!
