A reader emailed us that Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reports Harry Potter German publisher Carlsen Verlag is doing very well:
The young magician Harry Potter has shaken up the publishing sector in Germany, causing Carlsen Verlag, the publisher of the four volumes in the country, to jump from 77th to 22nd place on the list of leading companies in the sector. Carlsen Verlag has seen its turnover climb by 365 per cent to DM155m thanks to author JK Rowling’s character.
The publishing sector as a whole in Germany, however, saw only modest growth of 1.8 per cent last year, with the large publishers performing better than the smaller ones. The book retailing sector has seen a similar trend, with just 0.8 per cent growth, although the largest 100 retailers increased turnover by 12 per cent, thanks to numerous acquisitions and new store openings.
