Note
Read ALL these instructions thoroughly BEFORE starting to knit. There may be sections where there are two areas are shaped at the same time (such as necklines or waist shaping).
Back
Cast on 115 sts on size 6 (4 mm) needles. Work in K1P1 ribbing for 2.5” (6.4 cm).
Change to size 8 (5 mm) needles and stockinette stitch. Knit 1 or 2 rows in the main color then knit a 2/2/2 stripe for the original school sweater or a 1/2/1 stripe for the new style sweater.
Continue in main color and work even until piece measures 12.0” or 30.5 cm (72 rows), excluding hem.
Armhole Shaping
Cast off 6 sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st at each end of every alternate row for 26 rows until 79 sts remain. Continue until armhole measures 9.3” or 23.6 cm (56 rows), with 79 sts remaining.
Shoulder Shaping
Cast off 7 stitches at the beginning of next 4 rows. Cast off 8 sts at beginning of following 2 rows. At the same time, when armhole measures 9.7” or 24.6 cm (row 58), start neck shaping.
Neck Shaping
Slip the center 31 sts to a holder. Dec 1 st at neck edge every row twice.
Front
Cast on 115 sts on size 6 (4 mm) needles. Work in K1P1 ribbing for 2.5” (6.4 cm).

Decrease for armhole at both ends, as for back. Continue until armhole measures 3.3” or 8.4 cm (20 rows), with 85 sts remaining.
Divide for neck. Work both sides at the same time. Work 42 sts. With a second ball of yarn, cast off center 1 sts and work remaining 42 sts. Continue armhole shaping until you worked 28 rows from the beginning of the armhole. At the same time, shape neck.
Neck Shaping
Decrease 1 st at neck edge of next row, then every 2nd row 14 times, then every 3rd row twice, until 22 sts remain.
Work even until armhole measures 9.3” or 23.6 cm (56 rows).
Shoulder Shaping
Cast off as for back.
Sleeves
Cast on 40 sts on size 6 (4 mm) needles. Work in K1P1 ribbing for 2.3” (5.8 cm). Inc 4 sts evenly across the row to 44 sts total.
Change to size 8 ( needles and stockinette stitch. Knit 1 or 2 rows in main colors and then add a stripe pattern for the new style sweater. There are no sleeve stripes on the original sweater. Continue in main color.
Inc 1 st at each end of every 5th row 5 times, then every 6th row 10 times to 74 sts (85 rows total, excluding hem).
Work even until sleeve measures 15.0” or 38.1 cm (90 rows), excluding hem.
Cap Shaping
Cast off 6 sts at beg of next two rows. Dec 1 st at each end of every 2nd row 10 times, then dec 1 st at each end of every 3rd row twice, then dec 1 st at each end of every 2nd row 9 times. Cast off remaining 20 sts loosely.
Shoulder Seams
Sew fronts to back along shoulder seams.
V Front Neck Single Band Collar
Change to size 4 (3.5 mm) needles. Neckband is worked in 2 pieces.
With right side of work facing, pick up and work (starting at bottom of front neck) 35 sts from right front neck edge, 3 sts from right back neck edge and 15 sts from back neck holder to center. Total 53 sts.
Work 1.1” or 2.8 cm (8 rows) in K1P1 ribbing. For the original style, center a 1/1/1 row stripe on the neckband.
Cast off loosely.
Work the left side the same way as the right, picking up the back neck stitches first.
Finishing
Sew sleeve top to armhole, easing to fit. Sew side and sleeve seams. Sew any remaining seams.
Darn/weave/sew in all loose ends.
