19 Years Later, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, News

Tom Felton has, not unexpectedly, opted to continue playing Draco Malfoy in Cursed Child at the Lyric Theatre on Broadway in NYC through November 1, 2025. His original 19-week contract expired on March 22 but was previously extended to May 10, and now through Halloween.

If you have not been able to see him reprise his role yet (as I have not!), you now have more time, although bear in mind that he will be taking some breaks: He will not be appearing May 11–31, August 17–23, September 14–20, and October 12–18.

As Leaky reported at the time, when Tom joined the production, making his Broadway debut, he said: “Being a part of the Harry Potter films has been one of the greatest honours of my life. Joining this production will be a full-circle moment for me, because when I begin performances in Cursed Child this fall, I’ll also be the exact age Draco is in the play. It’s surreal to be stepping back into his shoes—and of course his iconic platinum blond hair—and I am thrilled to be able to see his story through and to share it with the greatest fan community in the world. I look forward to joining this incredible company and being a part of the Broadway community.”

He is the first movie actor to join the Broadway cast and his presence has boosted ticket sales, setting box office records.

Unfortunately, the production has been condensed twice since it premiered on Broadway on April 22, 2018, and is now much shorter. I wish I could have seen the original two-part show. I was at the premiere, but with just a press pass for the red carpet, reporting for Leaky, but no ticket. The two-part show is still playing in London through September, when the West End production will also switch to the shortened version at the Palace Theatre.
