More about AOL Time Warner’s troubles: The company is, or at least was, a darling of the “New Economy.” A top-ranking executive resigns unexpectedly, citing unidentified personal reasons. Accounting issues are swirling about the company’s financial statements, even after it settled an SEC complaint in 2000 and was fined for improper accounting. The company announces a massive write-down of assets.

A sitcom starring former Monty Python star John Cleese has been dropped from US television after just two episodes. Bosses at ABC television made the decision because the show, Wednesday 9.30, failed to pull in high ratings.

For all you Michigan readers: The last “cheap theater” in Grand Rapids will go the way of JAWS’ victims – under. The Alpine 4 Theatre will drop its projected curtain for the last time on Sunday. Alpine 4 opened in 1970 as a first-run, full-price movie house. The final weekend shows go for $2, playing “Harry Potter,” “Snow Dogs,” “A Walk to Remember,” and more. “Osmosis Jones” is free to ages 12 and under in honor of the Dove Family Film Festival. The Royal National Theatre is to go for younger audiences by staging 13 world premieres, building a studio theatre, converting conventional auditoriums, and giving permission to take a beer into the show… The main theatre season opens next month with The Power Book, devised from Jeanette Winterson’s novel by the author Deborah Warner, and Fiona Shaw. Shaw is one of the most admired actors in Britain: to really young audiences she is also Aunt Dursley in the Harry Potter film.
