On April Fool’s Day, we received an email from a woman named Rosalind who claimed she had a summary of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix that had appeared in Scholastic’s catalog for Summer/Fall 2003. I refused to believe it (because of the day), but she insisted, and finally sent me a copy of the catalog to prove it.

This is 100% confirmed – this is indeed a teaser summary of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

HEAVY, HEAVY SPOILER WARNING. If you do not want to know a basic plot for the fifth Potter book, do not click here or read the comments that are sure to follow. I mean it. I would go so far as to say that I think this is what it will appear on the book’s jacket. On that page, there are also pictures of the catalog.

I should also point out TLC’s strict no-non-official spoilers policy. Anyone who loves HP to the extent that they visit this site runs the risk of having meant-to-be-known – as in ad copy – spoilers getting into their daily lives. If you don’t want to hear anything more about HP until June 21, best to lock yourself in a room for the remaining weeks – certainly don’t visit things fan-related. But ANYthing we post about book five will come either from JKR’s mouth or an equally official source (Bloomsbury, Scholastic, et al) – meaning, if it was not meant to be read, or wasn’t put out there by JKR herself, it will not appear on TLC. (read: Don’t send us emails that say “I have book five!” We will not post the info, true or not, and more than likely your email will be forwarded on to someone who can determine the source of the “leak.”) This counts because it’s ad copy written in a promotional fashion, directly from Scholastic. It’s meant to be consumed. So consume away.

Rosalind, my humblest, most abject apologies.
