In an online poll of over 23,000 Australian children, the Harry Potter books were voted “favorite read” (for the purposes of the poll, the series was counted as a single book). The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis came in at second place, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl was third. Participants were aged five through 17, and cast over 60,000 votes. Several “classics,” including Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen and To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee made the list, along with such future classics as Just Disgusting and The Day My Bum Went Psycho by Aussie author Andy Griffiths.
The results of the poll will be released at a celebration, hosted by Nancy Cartwright (the voice of Bart Simpson) in Federation Square, Melbourne, on May 15 at 11:00 a.m.
