Friday Night Shirt, a fifteen-minute film about single mothers, received a “Deffie” award for Best Dramatic HD Short Film at the High Definition International Film Festival earlier this week. The film, about “a young woman’s battle against a physically abusive husband” was “rescued” by J.K. Rowling after the filmmakers ran out of money to complete the project. Because (as Harry Potter fans know) she was a struggling single mother when she wrote “Philosopher’s/Sorcerer’s Stone,” Jo has been a long-time supporter of causes that aid single-parent families, including One Parent Families in the UK.
