Spending on film production in the UK jumped by 48 percent in 2006 to more than £840 million (about $1.64 billion), thanks in part to Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. One hundred thirty-four films, also including Stardust, His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass, Kenneth Branagh (Gilderoy Lockhart)’s The Magic Flute and Becoming Jane were filmed in the UK last year, making 2006 the second best year for film production in the UK. Film minister Shaun Woodward said, “These figures show that the UK is a great place to make a film . . . Two Potters – Harry and Beatrix – a Golden Compass and a bit of Stardust have helped the UK’s film industry have one of its best years ever.”
