Helena Bonham Carter Talks Bellatrix in New Interview

Bonham Carter Interviews

The AP has a new interview online with actress Helena Bonham Carter, who plays Death Eater Bellatrix Lestrage in the fifth Potter film, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. In the article Miss Carter talks of the upcoming film, her role as Bellatrix and of her characters wardrobe and personality saying:

“At first they thought, `Oh, we’ll just put her in a sack,’” Bonham Carter said. “But I said, `There’s no way I’m going to wear a sack. I’ve got to be a sexy witch.’”

...

“I also wanted everything to be splitting at the seams and a bit of `Sunset Boulevard’ disintegration to be going on, because she’s been in prison for so long. She has a very posh, aristocratic carriage, because she’s pureblooded, but at the same time she’s completely divorced from reality.”

Miss Carter goes on to mention an interesting tidbit regarding her characters role. She notes that when considering taking relatively small part as Bellatrix in OotP, she remembers a note from author J. K. Rowling saying, in her own words, ”...she’s going to be very significant in the last one.”

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix will be in theaters July 11.

I saw her in the A&E special, and I officially looooove what Helena Bonham Carter is doing with Bella! But it looks like their having a hard time making her ugly though lol

Well, she’s not supposed to be ugly, she’s supposed to look like she used to be attractive. So it’s pretty much perfect. She’s a bit obsessed with her wardrobe though, she talks about it a lot.

Well, she had so little screen time alloted that she felt it was important to make the biggest impact she could. Careful planning of costumes is one way to do that. And ooooooh, a note from JKR that Bellatrix is important in the lasyt book is very cool.

I agree, she is not really supposed to be ugly per se, she’s just supposed to look like a very beautiful woman who has had a rough go of it. And I think they’ve pretty much got that down.

I love Helen. <3

And yes, Bella is supposed to have a once-gorgeous-woman-who-has-faced-several-deshevling-years-in-Azkaban look. :D

Yeah I’m loving that last line- significant indeed. I wonder in what capacity. It would be so fitting to have Neville go up against her.

I read somewhere that she got so into her part that she actually damaged Matt Lewis’s ear with her wand.

Cool… I can’t wait to see this movie!

That’s great about book 7, I always wondered if the RAB in the locket could have been Rodolphus and Bellatrix

I love reading interviews from Helena about Bellatrix and was a bit sad that at hearing her role in OotP was small. But hearing that tid-bit about Bella in Book Seven makes me so excited to see the movie!

Shoot I just hope in Movie 6 they keep in ‘Spinner’s End’ and the whole Bella killing the fox ;0)

So Bellatrix’s going to be significant in the last book? I wonder… assuming Snape is good, I’m inclined to think she’d be the one to find him out. Don’t ask me why; I don’t have any specific reason.
