"Twilight" Author Stephenie Meyer Talks J. K. Rowling

In a new interview on MTV.com Stephenie Meyer, the author of the popular “Twilight” novels, discusses Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling along with the similarities she finds between the “Twilight” and “Harry Potter” series. While Mrs. Meyer notes she has not yet had the opportunity to meet her fellow author, she does say she “would love to sit down and talk with her.” She continues, noting the fact that while both series are hugely popular among younger readers, comparing one series to the other is something she finds difficult to do. She states:

“The interesting thing about the comparison is that I think you can compare my fans to her fans more easily [than me to her]. I do think that we both have people who are just really really enthusiastic, and will come miles to see you and be involved, and everybody really cares about our characters. But the [’Harry Potter’ and ‘Twilight’] stories are just so different.”

“J.K. Rowling’s audience is everybody, so that means we all have a piece of her audience,” Meyer laughed. “It’s terribly flattering to be compared to her, but there’s never going to be another J.K. Rowling; that’s a phenomenon that’s not gonna happen again.”

Finally, Mrs. Meyer goes on to talk more on topics she would like to speak with J. K. Rowling about if given the opportunity, including Jo’s thoughts of the Harry Potter films, her fans, and her experience of being a popular writer. As readers will remember, actor Robert Pattinson (Cedric Diggory) has been cast as leading man Edward Cullen in the upcoming “Twilight” film. All three previously released novels in the “Twilight” series are available for purchase in our Cauldron Shop.

This is just about the most beautiful love story I’ve read in a very looooooooong time. And even if the HP phenomenon will of course not happen again with another book (at least with the same figures) I really do hope that Twilight will be as universally known as HP, it just has to be. (and at the same time, i’d really like to keep it to myself… lol)

Stephenie Meyer wishes she had even 1/100th of JK Rowling’s talent. At least she recognizes she’s not “the next JK Rowling” like far too many people have been saying.

Eeep, I should probably go and hide now before I get attacked…

I never even heard of this series! Maybe only in US? Sounds great though, will look out for it at my local bookshop tomorrow.

When younger, I saw books as something for grown ups or people with a really big brains. As you can see, I was a really stupid kid.

But after reading Harry Potter, all this had changed… BIG TIME.

I think Twilight and Harry Potter is just one of those stories that, after reading it, you think to yourself ” Wait, a single person wrote this?”

So, I disagree with Stephenie whole- heartedly. Not the part that she WILL become the next JKR, but that she’s just got what it takes to be a person with the same love and respect that Jo has from the fans for her writing.

In a way, they’ve both changed my eyes towards reading. (just not to red)

I really love the Twilight series, but of course it will (probably) never include as many books as HP so the Twilight fandom could not grow so fast before the last on is published. But then she’s going to write (at least the first one) from Edwards point of view as well. I know a lot of hard core Potter fans really really love the series which made me read it as well and I’m sure the Twilightfandom will get a lot bigger as well. There’s a bit…erm…Vampirerock already as well gg written by wrockers (yay Lauren and Nina!!) but still :D

Thanks for posting…Edward…rofl ;)

A lot of people recommended the Twilight series to me after I finished Deathly Hallows and I’ve read all three books in that series. To be honest, I’m not all that fond of them. The Twilight books read like a self-insert for teenage girls. The writing is melodramatic and tedious. There is a description about how “hot” the main vampire character (Edward) is on practically every page. Everyone, and I do mean everyone, happens to fall in love with the clumsy main female character (the self-insert).

I CANNOT fathom how this series got so popular. The Twilight story reads like the “Mary-Sue” fanfics people are always complaining about. The characters are cookie-cut outs and stereo-typical.

It doesn’t come close to Harry Potter but it seems a lot of HP fans migrated to that fandom after DH to fill up the hole HP left.

Twilight is really the story of a girl stringing along a couple of chumps (albeit vampire and werewolf chumps). These types of stories are typically very popular with girls. The HP series has a more universal appeal. It’s kind of like comparing New Kids on the Block to the Beatles.

How refreshing, to read an interview with an author in which that author doesn’t (either overtly or subtly) express bitterness, resentment, or disdain toward Jo’s writing or her commercial success. So many other authors claim to respect Jo, blah blah blah, but always manage to sneak in snide, passive-aggressive comments about her and/or her writing.

Not so Stephanie Meyer. I haven’t read her Twilight series, but her interview makes me want to pick up her books, not just because the series itself sounds interesting, but because Ms. Meyer sounds like a class act who can appreciate another author’s success without being bitter about it. Good for her.

Ok, I got the LOTR and the His Dark Materials comparisons. Hell, even Narnia… but TWLIGHT? Seriously?!

Actually, after reading some of the later comments which include descriptions of the books, perhaps they don’t sound quite so interesting after all. (Love triangle? Um, no thanks.)

Nonetheless, I still have respect for Ms. Meyer for being classy and gracious.

I’ve gotta agree with Julie and Protego. The Twilight series is an overly saturated romance novel. I can’t believe people actually enjoy reading it. What an insult to the Harry Potter series that people compare the two.
