"Twilight" Author Stephenie Meyer Talks J. K. Rowling

In a new interview on MTV.com Stephenie Meyer, the author of the popular “Twilight” novels, discusses Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling along with the similarities she finds between the “Twilight” and “Harry Potter” series. While Mrs. Meyer notes she has not yet had the opportunity to meet her fellow author, she does say she “would love to sit down and talk with her.” She continues, noting the fact that while both series are hugely popular among younger readers, comparing one series to the other is something she finds difficult to do. She states:

“The interesting thing about the comparison is that I think you can compare my fans to her fans more easily [than me to her]. I do think that we both have people who are just really really enthusiastic, and will come miles to see you and be involved, and everybody really cares about our characters. But the [’Harry Potter’ and ‘Twilight’] stories are just so different.”

“J.K. Rowling’s audience is everybody, so that means we all have a piece of her audience,” Meyer laughed. “It’s terribly flattering to be compared to her, but there’s never going to be another J.K. Rowling; that’s a phenomenon that’s not gonna happen again.”

Finally, Mrs. Meyer goes on to talk more on topics she would like to speak with J. K. Rowling about if given the opportunity, including Jo’s thoughts of the Harry Potter films, her fans, and her experience of being a popular writer. As readers will remember, actor Robert Pattinson (Cedric Diggory) has been cast as leading man Edward Cullen in the upcoming “Twilight” film. All three previously released novels in the “Twilight” series are available for purchase in our Cauldron Shop.

I love both series but honestly neither Jo nor Stephanie are amazing writers. I respect both of them for their great stories but I don’t think Jo is a better writer than Stephanie, Jo just has a better story. Also Twilight doesnt only appeal to girls, I know many guys who read the stories.

Oh I would also like to mention that just because Twilight is a romance doesn’t mean it is cheesy and stupid. What about Jane Austen?? Everyone says her books are so amazing when they are cheesy romance novels. I hate it when people say that they are not “great literature” or cast aside as “chick lit” so stop saying that Twilight is plot less because it deals with romance. We are reading “There eyes were watching god” in class and it is considered great literature even though a lot of the book focuses on love. People need to stop being superior because they think they read great literature. If you think Twilight is poorly written then say the same thing about HP because its plot isn’t very complex it is the same good vs evil plot and isn’t magnificently written.

this really is hillarious the way the bashing is going on here. i’m part of a Fantasy fandom and let me tell you, the lit elitests there rip JKR a new one for her writing style, prose, ect. really people, get off your high horse, you can appreciate something on different levels without resorting to “it’s for shallow girls who want the boys” – actually it’s for readers who enjoy being able to escape from reality for a few hours.

but with that said, as an advid Vampire fan, i’m much more looking forward to the the Sherrilyn Kenyon -Dark Hunter, or Laural K Hamilton – Anita Blake novel. again, not on HP’s level, but for a fun, entertaining read, where i’m immersed in a world of -gorgous vampire boys and lots of action (both kinds), i can be self indulgent sometimes.

I mean Jo is a talented writer don’t get me wrong, but I do think that her writing style lacks the “amazing” factor. Like take the His Dark Materials series, Phillip Pullman’s descriptions of the different worlds really make the story’s complex theme come alive. I love Jo but when I loose count of how many times she uses Harry said or Ron said instead of other words it gets to me. Also, she uses the same descriptive words over again. I really like Jo and Stephanie and are inspired by their writing, I personally don’t think its as magnificent as people claim. However that doesn’t make their series’ bad ones. In fact I enjoy reading their books very much and cant wait for breaking dawn. I guess thats what makes them fun…at least for Twilight I don’t have to think that much!

I think that both The authors are great (even though i like jo more). But,I still dont think they can replace harry potter because they are so different. I so many ways that some harry potter fans might not like the twilight books Because they are mainly about romance and stuff like that. And i still am proud to say i love both the sagas and respect both the authors

Guess That Book

Harry liked Hermione very much, but she just wasn't the same as Ron. There was much less laughter and a lot more hanging around in the library when Hermione was your best friend.
