In a new interview on MTV.com Stephenie Meyer, the author of the popular “Twilight” novels, discusses Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling along with the similarities she finds between the “Twilight” and “Harry Potter” series. While Mrs. Meyer notes she has not yet had the opportunity to meet her fellow author, she does say she “would love to sit down and talk with her.” She continues, noting the fact that while both series are hugely popular among younger readers, comparing one series to the other is something she finds difficult to do. She states:
“The interesting thing about the comparison is that I think you can compare my fans to her fans more easily [than me to her]. I do think that we both have people who are just really really enthusiastic, and will come miles to see you and be involved, and everybody really cares about our characters. But the [’Harry Potter’ and ‘Twilight’] stories are just so different.”
“J.K. Rowling’s audience is everybody, so that means we all have a piece of her audience,” Meyer laughed. “It’s terribly flattering to be compared to her, but there’s never going to be another J.K. Rowling; that’s a phenomenon that’s not gonna happen again.”
Finally, Mrs. Meyer goes on to talk more on topics she would like to speak with J. K. Rowling about if given the opportunity, including Jo’s thoughts of the Harry Potter films, her fans, and her experience of being a popular writer. As readers will remember, actor Robert Pattinson (Cedric Diggory) has been cast as leading man Edward Cullen in the upcoming “Twilight” film. All three previously released novels in the “Twilight” series are available for purchase in our Cauldron Shop.
I haven’t read the Meyer’s books yet, but a friend of mine did. and she’s thrilled really. Particullary because Robert Pattinson is in the cast of the upcoming movie.
Personally, I don’t like Vampires and all that things, but I think that one of this day i could sit down and read them, hehe..

havn’t read any of twilight but from some of the comments ive just read i’m not sure i would care for it . i really miss HP. I have another series i’ve been reading you might enjoy not HP but it was pretty good the writing was good and the characters were interesting move fast with alot going on its called secerts of the immortal Nicholas Falmel (name look familar) by michael scott 2nd book due out in june. just a thought if your looking for something to read that isn’t sappy
wat pple dont realize is that if you like HP you’ll probably like Twilight though they are very different!!!! and ill look into Nicholas Flammel..if its any good cuz HP sure was
Could people please stop saying “Oh, those Twilight books suck and are so poorly written: they only appeal to teenage girls?”
It sort of sounds like a putdown to teenage girls (like myself). I’m sure you guys don’t mean that AT ALL but reading that so many times felt pretty insulting, kind of like people (men) who say “oh I can’t see that sappy romance because it’s a chick flick and I’m above that.” I don’t know, maybe that’s just the Libba Bray feminist coming out of me (great writer by the way- the Gemma Doyle series)
This is obviously just my opinion and I hope I don’t rub anyone the wrong way, because I love any HP fan :D
Harry Potter is so much better than the twilight series. period. (not that i don’t like the twilight series, because i do, it’s just that harry potter is soooooo much better) I am glad though that SM knows that she will never be “another” j.k rowling.
I started reading the first Twilight book last night and I have to say the writing is very immature. you can tell the author is young and somewhat inexprienced. I got confused alot, she doesn’t use alot of description so it’s kind of hard to imagine setting. But I think the story so far has potential to be good. but i’m not really hooked. then again. the first time i tried to read a HP book, i thought it was stupid and it took me 3 attempts over the course of like 8 months to actually read it. maybe that’s because i started with book 3 and i was a little confused but whatever.
As a reader and a fan of both series, I find it very humbling the way that Mrs. Meyer has in regards to Harry Potter. She knows where many of her fans are coming from, but she doesn’t try to appeal to the sense of wizardry to gain more and step into the same genre and world that Rowling created, and of course had an amazing amount of success. Yes, fans of fantasy will share and share alike in other popular, good fantasies, and you have to admit, Meyer’s got a lot of respect for Rowling not to try and use her [Meyer’s] current popularity and Rowling’s unbelievable success with wziards and the world that we all know and love to gain more fans or make her story more popular. Mrs. Meyer does it her way, does it well, for clearly many, many people like it, looks up to JRK and respects her novels and fans. An author whose constantly being positioned just below another who is rising in popularity but doesn’t presently have the same hope of mind-boggling sweeeping the globe, and still holds the other in such high regard? You really have to hand it to Meyer.
I actually cant believe some of the comments on here! Some people sound truly pathetic. I have read Twilights and to be honest I wasnt impressed but Im not going to waste my time slagging the author off because whats the point? And for those people who like the series but bitch at everybody who doesnt, please, get a grip! You make yourself sound very immature and need to accept that not everybody has to agree with you.
Oh and comparing the author to Austin or Bronte…coming from an Eng Lit degree student that is the funniest thing I’ve heard. The only thing they have is common is that they’re both books.
I HATE Twilight, Alex Rider, Percy Jackson, Inheritance and Charlie Bone because their author’s main goal is to be better than Harry Potter and all of the other students at my school are reading Twilight, Alex Rider, Percy Jackson, Inheritance and Charlie Bone and I’m the only one reading Harry Potter. I was the only person in the SCHOOL who did Harry Potter for their paper back book report. Harry Potter has depth, mystery, adventure, intrigue, red herrings, personality, excitment, and page-turnin’, can’t-put-it-down amazement.
Twilight is for teenage girls. As you can see, I am not a teenage girl, I am a teenage boy. I HATE how all of the girls drool over Edward, and obssess over him. It’s just to sappy and boring. All of the girls walk up to me and say, “You’re still reading Harry Potter? That’s OUT! Twilight’s in, it’s sooo much better!” Also, recently, I found out that Robert Pattinson, the actor that played Cedric Diggory, has betrayed us to the forces of evil.
I HATE Alex Rider. For me, it has to be one of the worst books ever. It’s just about this stupid kid who goes off shooting everything in sight. The plot stays the same, and the characters are made of cardboard. No, more like extra-stiff cellophane. It feels like there’s an explosion on every page. It’s shocking that this is the new thing at my school, and almost everyone likes it. They always tease me saying that Alex Rider is better. Sometimes I want to cry. What’s happening to people these days? I know people like Alex, and I sometimes want to kick them.
Percy Jackson has no originallity. Everything comes from Greek Mythology and Harry Potter. At my school, people jeer at me “OMG, Percy Jackson is sooo much better than stupid Harry Potter!” Give me a break!
Inheritance is Harry Potter and Star Wars mixed in a blender and everyone having Welsh names. I have always HATED fantasy books that take place in imaginary lands and everyone has pseudo-Celtic names. Eragon fits the description. Also, it takes EVERYTHING from Star Wars and Harry Potter. It’s another book that EVERYONE else likes and says it’s better than Harry Potter to their friends loud enough so I could hear them. Charlie Bone is just a big Harry Potter rip-off.
In conclusion, I believe that Harry Potter needs more respect and that after Deathly Hallows, reading has gone downhill. I am sorry I had just written an essay.
hm, upon reading these comments i’ve decided not to buy the books. since i’m really after ‘adventure’ fiction over a romance-focused one. but since you could not go wrong having a fun time laughing and loving some cheesy moments, i conclude that the story is somehow worth a MOVIE TICKET. :3
(i’ll see if the movie can somehow interest me enough to buy the books)
anyway, i like how people look at Jo’s phenomenon as something that’ll never happen. although not flawless in all aspects, it shall be ‘remembered and has made a difference in children’s storybooks (<—somewhere along the lines of stephen king i think, please don’t sue me).
both books are awesome, but in my opinion, hp is much better.
I really think they need to be kept seperate and should never be compared. It causes too much arguing. Twilight is always being compared to hp and it really annoys the hell out of me. They are 2 seperate books that are entirely different, the fandoms need to be kept seperate too. :[
I just finished reading the first book in the Twilight series. I bought all three books, excited to read them because I’ve heard so much about them…
It was an okay book, but that’s all I can really say about it. The two main characters, Bella and Edward, practically shouted out MARY SUE, in my opinion. I was really surprised when I found people saying that these books were better than the Harry Potter books… o.O!!
"...Harry has been achieving very poor results in his classes with me --"[br]"I should have made my meaning plainer," said Professor McGonagall, turning at last to look Umbridge directly in the eyes. "He has achieved high marks in all his Defense Against
about JaNe Austen and Charlotte Bronte that was me-it wuz wat i was saying all along
