Ah sweet summer, the time when many of us take time off and head to the beach or holiday for rest and relaxation, and perhaps a fair bit of reading. As such, National Public Radio recently conducted a poll of the Best Beach Books Eve, and the Harry Potter series by author J.K. Rowling took the top spot. Out of a list of 100 books best read on holiday, the top ten choices were as follows:

1. The Harry Potter series, by J.K. Rowling
2. To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee
3. The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini
4. Bridget Jones’s Diary, by Helen Fielding
5. Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen
6. Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, by Rebecca Wells
7. The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald
8. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, by Douglas Adams
9. Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, by Fannie Flagg
10. The Poisonwood Bible, by Barbara Kingsolver

Thanks to TLC staffer Mysterylover Anne for the heads up! What say you: which of the Harry Potter series is your favorite to read at the beach or holiday? Have a favorite, or too tough to call? Feel free to give your thoughts below in the comments.

Avatar Imagegoodegogo says: no idea wich one is my favorit, but i must say that harry potter is good anywareAvatar ImageHPNAIV says: I've never been to the beach... =) But I think Half-Blood Prince or Deathly Hallows would be favorite to read if I ever went to one. Actually, I can't even choose! I would read them all.Avatar ImageSlytherinGirl911 says: Probably the Order of the Phoenix or the Half-Blood Prince. But then again, I would probably bring them all to read anyway...Avatar Imageplacebowiz says: niceAvatar ImageJadeDanielle says: I like to read all seven in order, but if I had to pick one to probably be okay to read by its lonesome during a holiday...Prisoner of Azkaban :)Avatar ImageAgrippa1 says: I can bring them all to the beach on my Kindle, and leave my good copies at home on my shelf!Avatar Imageplacebowiz says: niceAvatar ImageSund says: How do you have them on the Kindle, unless you got the illegally? I wish I could get them legally on my Kindle.Avatar ImageDawna says: I read the series every summer!Avatar Imageplacebowiz says: niceAvatar ImageHattFerg says: those are all really good! but of course Harry Potter is always a great read!! (even when it's not the first time reading it!)Avatar ImageOuroboros says: My favorite is Half Blood Prince or Deathly Hallows! I'd take those with me! Really want to get the book set that's out now and years 1-5 DVDs. I need to buy so many things! D:Avatar Imageplacebowiz says: coolAvatar ImageWON_TWO says: HBP hands down...Avatar Imagegryffindor1991 says: HBP or DH. they both are awesome.Avatar ImageFloridianFlounder95 says: HBP for holidays, it makes me happy. ^-^ until DD dies that is. DH is more of at home by candle light to show how creepy it is sort of book, but i read it anywhere! :DAvatar ImageTriple_S says: Goblet of Fire is my favorite to read on the beach or while relaxing..its when everything really goes up a notch w/ you know who coming back!Avatar Imageentoptic says: 4 or 5, can't really choose.. 4 and 7 have grown on me after rereading the series a couple of times.. 5 was my favorite from the beginning.Avatar ImageAndreaB09 says: Werid. I read my harry potter books anytime i go to the beach. If the water is to cold, i enter another world. <3Avatar Imagehogwarts911 says: Favorite is definitely Deathly Hallows!Avatar ImageMosu says: HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS :D brings great joy to my life lmao :)Avatar Imagebiiigbob says: Read HBP before seeing the film to fill in the gaps the movie would have. I'm reading DH now, just because.... but not at any beach. I prefer a comfortable chair.Avatar Imageapril_showers says: I say Prisoner of Azkaban or Goblet of Fire. Though they would all be great of course. Avatar ImageHermioneWwannabe says: Wow i saw so many people with a copy of HBP in their hand this year & it made me so happy! The BOOK fandom is spreading I believe! :) well I hope so! Read the books don't just watch the movie PLEASE! :D # 5 is my favorite book to read over and over again. My favorite is #7 but reading it over and over again is too emotional for my poor head! <33Avatar ImageLunaLupinTonks says: woah.... i've read 3 off that list.......1. The Harry Potter series, by J.K. Rowling 2. To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee 8. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, by Douglas Adams but i haven't read any of them on the beach.Avatar ImageDiamondWings says: Great!!! really great!!!Avatar Imagedragonfrog says: Love them all (of course); 5 is a great book but the hardest to read, so much angst and injustice. 7 is the fantastic epic climax, probably my favorite, but 6 is the most amusing, like the picnic between two storms. 4 is the the fun Indy Jones of the series; 3 has the best plot mind warp; 1 is the fab beginning; 2 is perhaps the least successful of this very successful set but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy it.Avatar Imagetayler18 says: True that!!Avatar Imagetayler18 says: True that!!Avatar Imageangelvoice says: I know I always take a HP book with me when I go to the beach.Avatar ImageHP_Flower says: HBP is my favorite....Avatar Imagefaerenach says: Best beach books I ever took with me were the Harry Potter books on audiotape (Love you, Stephen Fry) and Voyager, by Diana Gabaldon (all of the Outlander series are good, thick books that you can lose yourself in).Avatar ImageParkinsonpansy says: hbp is the best hp book to read!! :) Avatar Imagemtbsergio says: Just don't take your ebook reader to the beach, sand will get into it. I've learned my lesson. :)Avatar Imagelupinwandcaster says: Haha, my GoF book is full of sand from the beach!Avatar ImageBritski says: Hahaha I have to admit, I read 6, 7, and 4 at the beach this summer. Yea, for living in FL! haha Avatar Imageimpoohnfrenz says: I think Deathly Hallows would be a good beach read. Its so intense and you would get a GREAT tan from being so wrapped up in the book!Avatar ImagePadfootLover4ever says: Hmmm is is a coinsidence that I am on vacation at the beach this week?? I brought HBP along with me to read....Avatar Imagebleucatt says: The 3rd or 7th one probably. Haha the 5th one was my favorite, but then I saw the movie and it just ruined it for me. Hmm... or maybe the 6th one. Or the 4th... haha no no, either Deathly Hallows or Prisoner of Azkaban. Final Answer.Avatar ImagePhylis says: Awesome! Avatar Imagepottershrink says: OOTP!! then DH, then GOF!Avatar Imagemadman1277 says: Man, i went to beach this summer and read the whole series. It was so awesome... prolly my 4th time reading the whole series together.... I am always reading an Hp book though... I love them all so much, to hard to deside which is my favorite Avatar Imagemadman1277 says: If i had to though... 1. Ootp/DH/Hpb ... ugh nvm still cant desideAvatar Imageiamnotworriedharry says: Good list- we are leaving for the beach next week! Got the books on CD for the drive. Avatar Imagemadman1277 says: I have one last Comment... This news about how HP books are peoples favorites for vacations, is so good to hear. I firmly believe and hope that the HP series will live for centuries. I know im going to introduce my kids to it, and i hope they do the same to theirs.Avatar Imageariana_dumbledore says: I have actually brought the fifth one to the beach twice this summer :) My favorite is between one, five, and seven... but I love them all :)Avatar ImagePinkwizard says: I do read them at the beachAvatar Imagedarkprincess637 says: I'm definitely for Harry Potter and Pride and Prejudice! :)Avatar ImageMrs.Brisby says: Order of the Phoenix... any and all would be good though. :)Avatar ImageShalanarah says: well, i wont bring HP to the beach coz im very protective of my beloved HP books. They could get smudge by all the sand and water!Avatar ImageGinnywobbles says: I have to save these for reading ideas. There are still five I haven't read (maybe because I have trouble tearing myself away from HP!)Avatar Imagealegria35 says: HP of course is definitely a good beach read. Time pass by and you will not notice it because you will be engrossed to the story unfolding. A week in the beach is not enough though, if you are reading the HP series, unless you can read each book in a day (which I have done for HP7)Avatar Image-MischiefManaged- says: I can't believe The Great Gatsby is on that list. :o That book is partly responsible for the fact that I didn't read a single novel for fun for over 15 years... Until the spring of this year, of course, when I started reading Harry Potter. We had to read The Great Gatsby at school and it was the most boring book I had ever laid my hands on, so boring in fact that it completely turned me off from reading "proper adult literature" (meaning books from the other sections of the library except the teenage section). As for which HP book I'd want to read over the summer, I really can't choose just one. I absolutely adore the magic and the relative innocence of the first books and the time Harry and his friends spend in Hogwarts, but on the other hand, the story itself gets more complex and more intrigueing from Goblet Of Fire and Order Of The Phoenix onwards. So it's a really really difficult decision. But if I was held at wandpoint and had to choose just one book, I think I'd still choose Prisoner of Azkaban. As much as I love all the other books too.Avatar ImageAbiDumbledore says: My favourite is HBP but i do occasionally feel like reading one of the 7 at random =)Avatar Imagecghambright says: It most definitely is the best...but I would read Harry Potter anywhere...anytime. That really is a great list though so of my other favorites like Pride and Prejudice and Catcher in the Rye are on it too!! But it's almost impossible for me to choose a favorite Potter book. I love them all. Prisoner of Azkaban is the first one I ever read so it's always special, but I love Half Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows, and....Order of the Phoenix.Avatar ImageFleur-de- Lily says: Cool.Avatar Imagefreshpine says: HBP l think.....it makes me laugh!!!! DH........ermm, probably......Avatar Imageginny_potter4ever says: My beach book is harry potter and the order of the phionex my copy is full of sand and the binding is broken!!Avatar ImageKiwiBrian says: I've never heard of numbers 9 and 10 on the list. Can anyone tell me about them?Avatar Imagefinny says: i prefer to read harry potter in the winter, while the rain is pouring outside and i'm really comfy and warm in my house.. i really can get that feeling of what the common room of hp transmits meAvatar Imagehepburn says: I've read half of these books! :DAvatar ImageKayJay123 says: I love em all but Prisoner of Azkaban is my favorite :). All in all a great list of books.Avatar Imagearas says: Well, I came back from a beach holiday last week and I took OotP, HBP and DH to read with me! Only managed to finish DH after I came back but I couldn't put it down - it's becoming my favorite!Avatar ImageWickedLoz says: Uhh... This winter has been such a pain, now the talk of beach reads just depresses me! OotP is my favourite, but it is too miserable for the beach. So, probably PoA or HBP for me.Avatar ImageAsta says: my favorite is deathly hallows.......Avatar ImageMugglejeff says: Good 1STAvatar Imageemmabonkers says: My two favourites are the Prisoner of Azkaban and the Order of the PhoenixAvatar ImageLooie says: Well, I think Deathly Hallows is my favorite, and I'm going to the beach soon so I might get to read it there, but I did read the cave scene in Half-Blood Prince for the first time on a lake, so that always reminds me of it (I think being by the lake made it scarier :)Avatar ImageLunaHermione says: the hole series is amazing... you can't choose just one, so I read all of them once again every time!Avatar Imageemmabonkers says: Order of the phoenix and the Prisoner of Azkaban.Avatar Imageemmabonkers says: Order of the phoenix and prisoner of azkabanAvatar Imageele0206 says: DH, of course. But PoA too...they're both my fav ones.Avatar ImageJessBlogsBooks says: I think I'd give anything to go on vacation to the beach for a week and just lay there everyday and read the entire series. Sounds wonderful.Avatar ImageLexitheAuror says: I don't know. Probably DHAvatar ImageLexitheAuror says: That's cool that HP was top of the list! I've read some of the others on the list, but some I haven't even heard of.Avatar ImageR-for-H says: LOL how funnyAvatar ImageHagrid 713 says: but of courseAvatar Imagearianneross says: Don't really know which of the books is my favorite, might be the seventh. But Harry Potter's good to read anywhere you are! :DAvatar Imagebettb says: Since DH has been at the top of my list since page one, I'll go with it for my choice. At the other extreme, PS/SS might be a good summer holiday choice, for the giddiness of discovering the magical world. Remember how much fun that was?!Avatar Imagebengtson_98 says: I LOVE ALL THE HP BOOKS>> Can't choose!!!!!!!!!!! I Love RE-Reading Them..............Must do this agian after I finish 'Harry, A History'Avatar Imagewandmastercalum says: I don't really read on the beach since I'm 13 and usually play about but I do think HP PS is the best book to read. I noticed there are a lot of amazing books there though never read them I just know from other peoples opinons. Ha I don't have to wonder why Twilight is not there.Avatar ImageGwynogs_rabbit says: Alright!!! :D :D :D that is so awesome that HP got that spot! Well right now I'm reading HBP by the pool every day, but that's only because of the movie coming out...I think probably on a holiday or at the beach, my favourite would be OotP, because it's the most adventurous. Also, PoA because it's such a whole, complete mythological story in and of itself, and includes time travel and mystical flying critters, so is perfect for taking you away from the normal.Avatar ImageFigment says: Way to go Harry Potter... I would also add the Sookie Stackhouse series for best beach books, but they are very much adult books.Avatar ImageMoose_Starr says: It is so cool that HP came top of that list of 100 books. My favorite HP book is ... too difficult to choose. If I couldnt take all the HP books with me, I'd take PoA and SS. Avatar Imagejustanargle says: That's true, i got my goblet of fire out today :D going on holiday, so i need a big book to read! :) Avatar Imagebjullie says: I re-read the whole series each summer, but the best summer one is the Goblet of Fire.Avatar ImageRavenclaw98 says: yeah go Hbp!!Avatar ImageHermione Elizabeth says: For my favorite one... I'd have be either HBP or DH. They have the most action... even though I'd say that HBP would be a bit better than the DH. LOL All of them are good to read though.... I just finished re-reading them all! :)Avatar Imagesuh says: HBP is my favorit <3 , also The Kite Runner is quite goodAvatar Imagehermionenluna says: we dont need them to tell us that! :)Avatar Imagefelicitas says: 4 of those books I absolutely love! We analyzed Poinsonwood Bible in school last year, it's amazing. And the year before last we read The Great Gatsby. Pride and Prejudice is my favorite love story ever and my absolute favorite book is HBP!Avatar Imagehedwigsrevenge says: I think my favorite to read on a beach would be Goblet of Fire, it was my favorite of the series until Deathly Hallows. Even though I have read Deathly Hallows 4 times, I still cry every time, so I know better than to read it in public.Avatar Imagepartyweetow says: Always DH because it's my favorite book. Not just of Harry Potter, but of all time. It's my go-to book when I don't know what to read.Avatar ImageLovelySlytherinWitch19 says: I <3 The kite runner & Pride and prejudice!Avatar ImageLovelySlytherinWitch19 says: I <3 The kite runner & Pride and prejudice!Avatar ImageLovelySlytherinWitch19 says: I <3 The kite runner & Pride and prejudice!Avatar ImageKissa says: I've actually been thinking about getting the American versions in paperback, just for occasions such as the beach! :) Brought my UK hardcovers to the beach when I went to Greece this summer, and never again. I think I would take HBP, since it's my favorite.Avatar Imagehewy says: It's summer and am rereading the entire series of HP - now on GOF. DH and POA are still my very most favorites. Try as I may could not get into the Ya Ya Sisterhood. Have the Kite Runner and Twlight ready in the wings. Avatar ImageMalfoyluva says: WOW! thats really cool! big congrats to Jo! :-) My two all timefavorite ones are Goblet of Fire and half-Blood Prince! My fav is Half-Blood Prince! luv the romance in these two!Avatar ImageJackieC says: To Kill a Mockingbird as a BEACH book?! Some people lied, lied, lied. HP is no surprise as #1! GoF is my pick for the beach. Or maybe Deathly Hallows, but that could be because it's the only one I haven't read multiple times.Avatar Imagevicky granger says: Well, of course HP is first =D But the other books on the list are very prestigious, I mean, Harper Lee ? Congratulations Harry potter ! Avatar Imageweasleymyking says: I actually very much agree, I started and finished all the novels during the summer, or when I was bored after/during school. I quite have to disagree with Pride of Prejudice being on here, it was quite an awful book.Avatar Imagelevi-OH-sa not levio-SA says: i ALWAYS take hp to the beach with me! that is hilarious! great pollAvatar ImageAelaeras says: All of them are greatAvatar Imagedcsbelle says: This is why JKR needs to give permission to put them on KINDLE! If I had to choose one to take it would probably be OotP. But you know I'd prefer to take all of them and read them in order. But then again reading them out of order is still pretty good!! :D Avatar ImageMidnightSun321 says: harry potter is really an AWESUM holiday book!!! i read a few while on holiday (first time reading them)! now im on re-reading the series over 7times :PAvatar ImageBroomsnitch says: I'm re-reading Harry Potter this summer because I was hoping to re-read the sixth book before the movie came out. No such luck since I'm only half-way through Goblet of Fire and I saw the movie last week.
