Tonight, scores of readers let us know that actor Rhys Ifans announced on the Friday Night with Jonathan Ross program broadcast this evening on the BBC that he would be appearing in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. While Mr. Ifans did not state which role he would be portraying, TLC can report that Rhys Ifans will be taking on the part of Xenophilius Lovegood, Luna's eccentric father and publisher of the Quibbler magazine. A rather fitting photo of Mr. Ifans as an elaborately garbed person can be seen here. During his appearance, TLC reader Neil writes that Rhys Ifans said  the "HP wardrobe people flew out to Spain to fit him for his robes while on the set of Mr Nice," a film which is now in post production. Rhys Ifans has appeared in many films, notably Notting Hill, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, and the soon to be released The Boat that Rocked. Update: You can now see additional photos of Rhys Ifans here in our Image Galleries. Also thanks to ComingSoon.net we can see video of his announcement via YouTube.

On a related note, UHP emailed us to let us know they spoke with agents for actress Clemence Poesy about her possible return to the part of Fleur in Deathly Hallows, however the negotiations are ongoing, and nothing is certain yet. We are working to learn more on this and will update when we can.

Please note: As with all the others, WB has not yet officially confirmed any of these casting reports, and we continue to await a formal release on these, however TLC believes the casting of Mr. Ifans as Xeno to be correct.

Thanks to SS, and especially Will, Nick, Neil, and all the readers who emailed about the Jonathan Ross announcement!

Granted, this isn’t a ton of evidence to prove Xeno’s age, but Jim Dale played him like an old man on the audiobook. I don’t know whether Jo gives any guidance on Dale’s performance.

I always pictured him in his late 50’s or so. That’s why i thought that he looked too young the moment I saw his picture.

They are casting Xenophilius. How exciting! And Mr. Ifans was a scream as the half naked Scotsman in Notting Hill. Woo-hoo!

The link to Rhys in the red ‘fur’ coat opens about twenty five windows and totally crashed my computer. I ran a virus scan, and it appears to have tried to dump some nasty stuff. I’d recommend you remove that link, for the safety and sanity of your readers.

As to the age of Xeno, he has an only child who is 16 in DH. That could make Xeno as young as 33. Ifans is 41; an easy fit for the father of a teen.

I’ve checked DH and Xeno is definitely supposed to be an older character (or at least looks older) – he’s supposed to have `hair that looks like white cotton candy’.

Another thing I find interesting is that because we know that wizards have much longer life spans than normal people, we assume they all have to look old and wise. I think this casting choice will make everything more interesting as it shows that wizards actually can be singular personalities.

It should be very interesting. It’s true that I pictured someone older, but if he’s got a daughter Luna’s age, I guess that would be about right. I think at one point Jo mentioned that he looked old, probably b/c of the stress of worrying about Luna. So far, I totally trust the casting decisions of WB, if not everything else they’ve done. So we’ll see. I’m just jonesing for July.

I thought Xeno would be older, but Rhys is definitely quacky enough for the role!

This is brilliant! I cant think of a better person for Xeno! Rhys Ifans is a brilliant comic actor and plays slightly mad parts realy well. He’s especially brilliant in films such as Little Nicky (as shown by that picture) and Kevin and Perry Go Large (it was a popular British movie about 6 yrs ago where he played a mad DJ in Ibiza).

Isn’t he a bit younger than the other parents?
