As readers will recall, Bloomsbury, the UK publishers of the Harry Potter novels, asked fans of the series to vote for their favorite character from author J. K. Rowling’s series. Voting concluded late last week and the results are in: Severus Snape was voted as the favorite character form the Harry Potter novels. Hermione Granger came in at second place, with Sirus Black and Harry Potter, himself, in the third and forth slots, respectively. A press release reads:

The vote was launched in May 2011 and received over 70,000 votes. Severus Snape gained 20% of those votes (just under 13,000) making him a clear winner. Severus Snape has appeared in all seven of the Harry Potter novels and came to be an integral part of Harry Potter’s life.

Hermione Granger took second place and Sirius Black third. Harry himself came in fourth and Lord Voldemort just made the top twenty at number 17. Dobby is the only non-human character to make the top ten and another Slytherin, Draco Malfoy, completes the top characters in tenth place. The top ten is below:

Avatar Imagemencia says: dobby made it in the top 10 yah!Avatar Imagemencia says: Dobby is my most favorite character but most of the characters in the top ten are my favorite :DAvatar ImageLilynLuna says: Yay - I voted for Hermione who came in second!Avatar Imagealexweasley12 says: LOL My friend is going to go crazy, snape is her favorite character !!Avatar ImageVane-Ale says: It's unbelievable how we changed our minds about dear all Severus... We really hated him at the beginning and totally ended up crying for him! The same result came out with the challenge MTV did... So, I guess there's no doubt... Snape's our hero! Personally, I really love Hermione, she's so smart and clever!!!Avatar ImageVane-Ale says: LOL it cracks me up how the Dementors made the list in a somewhat decent place (because they are not last) and not Aunt Petunia, Uncle Vernon or even dear Aunt Marge!!!!Avatar Imageshi suisen says: Snape!!! <3 Absolutely love that guy~Avatar Imageshi suisen says: On a side note, now that I've just carefully look at the list, how can Crabbe and Goyle be in the Top 40 when Oliver is not even in Top 40?!Avatar Imagejacket says: I voted Luna! I'm so glad she made top 10!Avatar ImageResaPotter says: Yay for Snape!:pAvatar Imagemlopez says: So glad that Snape is #1! @Halfbood Princess- There are a few of us who never had to change our minds about Snape. When I was reading the books, I trusted Dumbledore's judgement and was thrilled when the final book confirmed that Snape was who I believe him to be. :) (People CAN change. Love conquers all.)Avatar ImageWulfric Ravenclaw says: Fang only got 1 vote I voted for him!!! :(Avatar ImageLivi22 says: I guess it was obvious that Snape would win *sigh*. No one else ever really had a chance. I can't believe Sirius came in before Harry! I voted for Hermione of course, and I'm glad she came in second but I was really expecting Harry to beat her.Avatar Imageroby_boh says: Snape is definitely one of the most interesting characters in today's children literatureAvatar ImageValeria-Johanna says: @roby_boh, not just children's literature, either. @Shining Lynx, well said.Avatar Imagegardener 51 says: Neville Longbottom deserved better. He had to overcome his limited magical talent with his heart and determination.Avatar ImageLunaLuver says: Yay for Snape! :D I'm really suprised Sirius came in third, and thrilled Hermione got second. Harry would never have gotten as far as he did without her. I love all the top ten so I'm happy, except Neville should have been in there. Perhaps switched with Ginny because she doesnt really do much.Avatar ImageHogwartsForever says: Not really surprising is it that Snape came out on top is it? I mean, does ANYONE actually hate Snape? lolAvatar Image1HarryPotterFan123 says: WOOT!!!! Snape definitely deserved the win :D Although I wish Bellatrix/Neville got a higher placing too!!!! Then again, ALL of JKR's characters are so absolutely incredible!!!! Everyone one of them has so much life and character its hard to believe that all of them didn't tie for first :)Avatar Imagecamila_black08 says: I voted for Dumble and Hermione :DAvatar Imagecamila_black08 says: HogwartsForever: I hate him. And I don't think I'm the only one ;)Avatar Imagecamila_black08 says: I mean, his personality. But he's a great character in terms of complexity :DDDDAvatar Imageweasleywannabe1997 says: I wish Harry would have won. In spite of his "saving-people" thing....LOLAvatar Imagemencia says: @halfblood princess I hated snape in the beginning too, I hated him right up to the halfblood prince. Avatar ImageWeenyOwl says: Of course it's Snape. No contest, in terms of complexity and nuance. What I don't get is how Ginny finished in the Top Ten - ahead of Dumbledore, McGonagall, Hagrid, Lupin, Neville! I always found Ginny a bit of a cardboard cut-out.Avatar Imagehewy says: Love Snape - and was glad to see Sirius in 3rd but Gred and Feorge only in the top 20(?) really now they were the heart and soul of humor in this series and especially in the films.Avatar Imagewandmastercalum says: Snape and McGonagall were amazing characters!Avatar ImageWON_TWO says: No mention of the Giant Squid yet again! :+/Avatar Imagegirlatty1 says: Well -- interesting -- but I do not agree. Harry rules!Avatar ImageUnknown_Mist says: im surprised neville didnt come in the top 10... :( :( Avatar ImageCorruptedNethicite says: @ Jacket, yeah me too.Avatar ImageCorruptedNethicite says: @ Lunalover, yeah about Sirius, I hated him ever since I've read book 5, and yet people seem to forget that or overlook it. But, as longs as my favorite characters are up then all is well.Avatar Imageanne1 says: yay for Snape! I have to admit I voted for Harry because I always followed his story most, but Snape is my second favourite and I was a Lily/Snape shipper. I'm surprised that Sirius made it so high and that Hermione beat the boys, especially Ron. I always assumed from reading people's comments that Ron was many people's favourite.Avatar ImageGarnetGirl says: Snape, Snape, Severus Snape... He was my dad's ultimate fav character...then again, he only did that to annoy my sister. But I'm a Slytherin all the way baby. My friend and I are learning Parseltongue.Avatar Imagelupintonksteddyfan99 says: lupin @ #11 YAY!!!!!!!!!!Avatar Imagekyrstalkris says: Yes! I'm so glad Hermione made it to number 2!!!!!! :) Actually, Snape won the MTV Harry Potter World Cup too! That was when I finally realized the MASSIVE fan base Snape has! To be honest, I'm quite shocked Sirius beated Harry! O_O To be honest, I was VERY surprised with that number 19, 26, 31, 34, 36, 37, 39, 39, and 40 even made it to the top 40!!! O.oAvatar Imagecjbg1980 says: Harry is always number one to me...Ginny before Dumbledore, What!Avatar Imagecjbg1980 says: Harry is always number one to me...Ginny before Dumbledore, What!Avatar ImageRosalie says: WeenyOwl, in the films, sure, because they gave her absolutely nothing from the books. She was completely rewritten. But in the books, Ginny's a great character, and she's one of my favorites. I'm pleased she placed so high, as she's often overlooked, but it's good to see she has a lot of fans. :) I do wish Neville was in the top ten though. And Harry will always be #1 to me.Avatar ImageHalfbloodPrince08 says: WOW best character, yes!! harry numer 4? love hermione. I would put harry on 3rd place and ron in 4th... luna dumbledore minerva molly arthur weasley Avatar Imagecjbg1980 says: Sorry don't know why that posted twice- I am sure glad Dobby made the list I just love him.Avatar ImageIceholic says: @CorruptedNethicite, Why should people hate Sirius after book 5? If anything, OotP made him a more sympathetic character. Avatar Imageforgetmenot_007 says: Wow..this is amazing. Severus Snape definitely deserves the first place! :') I expected Harry to be in the 2nd place, though. And what are Dementors doing there in the list? Lol! XDAvatar ImageFleur-de- Lily says: I voted Luna! Avatar ImagePaitrix says: woohoo!!! SEVERUS SNAPE ROX!!! :DDAvatar says: I personally think Severus is my favourite too. So brave!Avatar Imagesiena says: LOL - I wonder what Rowling makes of it ... Snape has now been chosen favourite character twice in a row ... dear, dear ... :). I'm very, very pleased and touched that so many people are - in one way or another - touched by him. Thanks to everyone who voted.Avatar Imageharrypotter4258 says: lol and all the way at the bottom is cornelius fudge. xD snape is awesome. :)Avatar Imageeccentricalice says: Glad Luna made the top ten, no contest she is my favourite character.Avatar ImageLuna_lovegood17 says: I voted Luna too!Avatar Imagejyassa says: snape tottaly deserrved it but filch should be in lastAvatar ImageKittyVD says: well, I didn't know about the vote. But if I would've voted, I would've gone for Luna Lovegood or Hermione. But Severus Snape is a deserved winner, what an intriguing character. It made me, and probably many others, wonder: is he good, is he bad? what are we supposed to believe... Especially in Half-blood Prince!Avatar ImageLovesLaborLost says: Lucius Malfoy beat Molly and Arthur? Huh???Avatar ImageValeria-Johanna says: It's striking that Snape is so popular, when he embodies so many of the qualities that are supposed to be out of fashion - including loyalty, self-sacrifice, distrust of celebrity, and the good old stiff upper lip! As well as 'Love, Actually,' which never goes out of date.Avatar ImageMoonlitFox says: lol, Snape's at the top while Fudge is the very bottom. xDAvatar ImageLovesLaborLost says: Fudge should be at the bottom - but Lucius over Molly Weasly? Sorry, I just find that hard to believe. Avatar ImageSeVeRuS3 says: :DD he deserves it!! <33Avatar ImageAlexSnape says: Well, ...obviously. ;) A few of us have always know that Snape is made of Awesome, now the polls are confirming it!Avatar Imagecaravaggio says: Of course it had to be Snape. He's the most appealing character in the books,at least for (female)adult readers...and the only one with a veritable character development.Avatar ImageLiara says: I have never ever expected anyone else for the first place! ;) Great job Mr Rickman, again! :)Avatar Imagebadger666 says: Yay for Snape!Avatar ImageAnaLuisa says: I wish Oliver would have made it to the top 40. Avatar Imagenegar malfoy says: my top 10 is like this :1.Draco 2.Dumbledor 3.Snape 4.Hermione 5.Fred 6.Goerge 7.Narssica 8.Cedric Diggory 9.Tom Riddle 10.NevilAvatar Imagenegar malfoy says: DOBBY is BEFORE Draco???????????? i'm not agree with this voting! AHHH! and prophessor Dumbledor should be in the third or at least 4th place! THAT"S RUBBISH!!!Avatar ImageMaxtina Potter says: WHHAAHHH?!??! HARRY SHOULD BE #1! WHAT THE HELL?! D:Avatar ImageMad But Happy says: Ron is 5, oh well. lolAvatar ImageTarana says: I wonder how many voters have based their "favorites" on the movies instead of the book. I mean, I think Jason Isaacs is great, but that does not make Lucius Malfoy one of my favorites characters. I agree with the people who said that Harry should be no. 1. Dumbledore is awesome, too, and most certainly has the depth Snape does. As a character, Snape is created extremely well. (All the characters are! And that includes Umbridge and Skeeter). But he is still not in my "favorites" list. A teacher who hardly deserves the title, because the way he has treated pupils like Hermione and Neville (I'm not mentioning Harry, because apparently Snape 'saw' James in him, and he had not grown out of his childhood traumas, which is kind of understandable.) Mr Rickman is a great actor, and, as said, in the movies and the books Snape is great as a character we love to hate, and to see his reasons and his painfull secret, to see where many of his frustrations came from. Sorry, talking too long. Anyway, I think Neville deserves so much better. If Snape redeemed himself in book 7, then even more so, book 7 showed that Neville could have been the "Chosen One", if Voldemort had marked him instead of Harry. The funny thing is, I wrote a story once for a competition in which you had to write the "end of Harry Potter" and this was before book 5 came out, I had Harry die (I know, sorry) and Neville become a hero and actually ending up with Ginny. My other story in which Harry survived, and Neville played a very small part, was the one that won. Still, I thought it was great when Neville proved to be more of a hero (and a contender to kill Voldemort) and not just a funny whimp, later :o) Right, this post has gone on way too long. I won't go into the others on the list.Avatar ImageMaxtina Potter says: ^ COMPLETELY AGREE. Avatar Imagemebenedi says: I don't care if Snape has depth as a character, he was nothing more than a bully. The way he treated students was despicable. I don't care if he was instrumental in saving Harry, I can't stand such a loathsome and dirty personality for a character in a book nor a person in real life. How about up voting someone with decency? Such a shame. It's so cliche to love Snape. He may have loved Lily, but he treated her like crap. I wouldn't have stood for that nonsense either.Avatar ImageTanderule says: Snape, rockin' the votes! Today I saw this girl with a shirt that said "Keep Calm, Trust Snape". It was sweet! I find Luna and Hermione to be my favorite characters in the series. They both are a little like me, though mostly Luna is shown in me. She's quirky and strange, like me, but still fun. Hermione is really brainy and intelligent, like me, but she still knows when to have fun (mostly shown after year 4). Pleased to see who came in the Top Ten, I love to see what characters are the best in their opinions!Avatar ImageSapphire_King says: Luna <3 <3Avatar ImageGiant Squid says: Hmmmmm. I disagree with some of them, but mostly I agree!Avatar ImageOrWorseExpelled1 says: I'm kind of surprised that Fred was 13. I loved him too, but the twins were so single-faceted, so I never really thought too much about him until he died and I don't think anyone else did either.
