Carmen Ejogo will be portraying the MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America) President, Seraphina Picquery, in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them film. It is hard to miss the extravagantly dressed President in any of the movie trailers. With a headpiece holding up all of her hair –save a couple of curls– and robes with magnificent golden embroidery.  The leader of the North American Wizarding community in 1926 looks like a force to be reckoned with.

Out of respect for Seraphina herself (she’s not the kind of character you disobey happily), we can’t give away too much about her yet. For now, all we can really give you are hints: she’s charismatic, formidable, influential. She’s an important figure in the wizarding society of 1926 New York. Extremely important.

Carmen Ejogo sat down recently with a representative of Pottermore, in full costume at the time. When the interviewer asks Carmen about her wand, she excitedly explains how in love with it she is. We have not yet been given a glimpse of the President’s wand, but Carmen tells that it is purple with an embedded gem.

Ezra Miller seems to be the wand expert. Carmen tells us that he had explained to her about all the different schools of wandmakers. She says that he was amazed by hers because it was not a style he was accustomed to.

When will we get to see the notorious object in action?

‘There’s going to be something very, very powerful coming out of that wand when it’s needed,’ says Carmen. ‘The wrath of Seraphina is yet to emerge from it. But it’s elegant and regal, which probably reveals something of her personality.

Carmen seems quite fond of her character. She says that Seraphina is quite aware of the power she yields and the wand is a representation of that power. Carmen praises Seraphina in a simple way, with only a few syllables, “She’s epic.”
