If the states of Ohio and Wisconsin were not already on your bucket list, get ready to alter your travel plans! Both states will soon be offering screenings of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone accompanied by live orchestration of John William’s iconic score.

The first concert event will take place March 25 and 26 at the Ohio Theatre. The Columbus Symphony will perform as audiences view the film on a 40-foot high-definition screen.

If you miss that screening, you’ll have a second opportunity June 24-25 at the Overture Hall in Wisconsin. The Madison Symphony Orchestra will treat concert-goers to a three-hour performance interrupted only by a 15-minute intermission.

The Cap Times discussed the melding of classical music and popular culture with Peter Rodgers, the symphony’s new marketing director. He said:

“Relevance is a big challenge for classical musicians and classical music in general…It’s relevant in so many different parts of our lives, but sometimes not as visible.”

So in order to promote enjoyment of the music for its own sake, these collaborations are on the rise. Rodgers observed:

“Almost any big blockbuster film that has imagination and a lot of emotional content to it has classical music and many times original compositions.”

It’s not that the music isn’t familiar. Most fans can pinpoint Hedwig’s Theme after only a measure or two, if not a few notes. It’s that these companion pieces welcome new-comers to the concert experience–and into a love of classic music in general. It becomes more accessible. Rodgers continued:

“This is what helps connect people to the value of classical music itself…They tend to take it for granted in film and movies. It opens up that window for people.”

For fans who already love both the movie and the score, these should be amazing, magical events. For those venturing into the Harry Potter world for the first time, it will be a one-of-a-kind, irresistible introduction.
