Miriam Margolyes, Harry Potter’s Professor Sprout, performed her one-woman show, Dickens’ Women, at the Christmas Dickensian Festival this past week in Malton.

Dickens’ Women was also co-written by Margolyes herself, with help from Sonia Fraser, and was first debuted in 1989 for the Edinburgh Festival. It has since gone on two very popular world tours in 2007 and again 2012 for the 200th anniversay celebrations of Dickens’ birth . It has also been nominated for an Olivier award.

The play includes 23 different characters based on or inspired by characters from many of Charles Dickens’ popular novels.

Margolyes was a huge fan of Dickens, which inspired her to write the play.

“Dickens is the best. Once you’re hooked by his words, his books will enrich you over a lifetime. It’s going to be enormous fun.”
“I fell in love with Dickens at school and would like to appeal to children, young people and adults alike to come and enjoy the spirit of A Christmas Carol.”

About her excitement to be performing her show again live she added:

“Malton is the perfect setting for a Dickensian Festival and I have been looking forward to returning to The Milton Rooms’.”
