Mark Williams, best known in the Harry Potter fandom for his portrayal of Arthur Weasley, the muggle-loving father of Ron, returned to television this week as a different sort of father. He once again assumes the mantle of the title character, a Catholic priest with a penchant for solving crimes, in Father Brown.

The series introduced Britons to the fictional Cotswald village of Kembleford, set in the early 1950s, when it first aired January 14, 2013. Some episodes are based on the works of G.K. Chesterton, but most are original writings.

They revolve around the comings and goings of the parish priest, who often becomes entangled in local criminal investigations. This is much to the chagrin of the police inspector, of course, who seems to constantly suspect the wrong person. Father Brown (Mark Williams) employs the abilities of friends and his own wit and vocational insight to crack the cases.

RadioTimes describes his character as follows:

“Like many of the best TV detectives, Father Brown’s unassuming manner conceals a brain like a steel trap. As a priest it’s his job to understand people – and to see into their souls – which also proves to be particularly helpful in his work as an amateur sleuth.”

Father Brown is entering it’s fifth season and premiered the first episode January 2nd. It airs every weekday, Monday to Friday, at 1:45 p.m. on BBC One. For fans not lucky enough to reside on the UK side of the pond, a cursory search revealed there are also numerous online streaming options. A Christmas Special aired December 23, 2016, as well.
