The promotion of Viceroy’s House picks up in advance of its premiere at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival next month, which will be followed by the theatrical release March 3rd.

The film stars Michael Gambon, known as the wizened and respected head of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Albus Dumbledore, in the Harry Potter series. In Viceroy’s House he plays another highly-regarded leader, General Hastings Ismay.

Imdb reports that Ismay was born in India, educated in the United Kingdom, and then returned to serve as an officer in the Indian Army. He served during WWI and eventually rose to the position of chief military assistant and staff officer under Prime Minister Winston Churchill during WWII. After retiring from a distinguished career in the military, Ismay served as Lord Mountbatten’s Chief of Staff in India during the transition of power from Britain back to the people, which is where Viceroy’s House begins its story.

Lord Mountbatten is portrayed by Hugh Bonneville, seen in the new poster below with Gillian Anderson, who plays his wife, Edwina Mountbatten.

Viceroy’s House covers this tumultuous period in British and Indian history, the repercussions of which touched many lives–and continue to reverberate. According to Flickering Myth:

“The film is deeply personal to the director Gurinder Chadha, whose own family was caught up in the tragic events that unfolded as British rule came to an end.”

With ties of that nature, the film will undoubtedly resonate, as Chadha brings to it deep feeling and unique perspective. It is an important story–a story worth telling. And, therefore, a film worth seeing.

How Gambon’s General Ismay fits into Chadha’s cinematic version of the historic tale remains to be seen, as he is not featured in the new clip below. But watch the footage and get ready for the upcoming release, when you can enjoy the sweeping film with all its players in full!
