Today, rumours of a Cursed Child film trilogy starring Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson circulated the press (and then crushed by J.K. Rowling) after reports of conversations between Warner Bros. and the original cast.

The original report came from the Unofficial Universal Orlando Podcast, reported by Digital Spy, during which journalist and historian Jim Hill (who apparently has good contacts in the film departments at Disney and Universal) said:

“I have heard that Warner Bros has actually had conversations with [Emma], with Rupert, and, of course, Daniel about Cursed Child, because they want this to be, for lack of a better term, Harry Potter: The Force Awakens.

“They want this trilogy of movies to have the actors that we know and love from the original films, that we watched grow up, as adults.”

“And, of course, they’re hiring a bunch of new, younger actors to play their children with the hope that, if we can lean on JK [Rowling], maybe there’ll be The Cursed Adolescent.”

He went on to predict that the trilogy would begin in 2026, two years after the last Fantastic Beasts is released. Of course, if this really was going to be a Force Awakens type of stunt, we’d have to wait quite a while longer than that anyway!

Although rumours have continued to grow, Warner Bros and J.K. Rowling have worked to shut down these whispers, with Warner Bros and Rowling’s representatives previously commenting:

“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a stage play, with no plans for there to be a film.”

Rowling herself took to Twitter today to debunk the myths once and for all:

Sorry to those who got excited! We’d never rule it out (who knows where the future could take the series), but it seems for now we’ll have to settle for the FOUR remaining Fantastic Beasts films, and Cursed Child moving further afield!
