StudiocanalUK dropped the official international trailer for the The Lost City of Z, today. The period film stars Robert Pattinson, who played Cedric Diggory, the first Hufflepuff to steal our hearts, in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. He’s joined by the talented Charlie Hunnam, Tom Holland, and Sienna Miller.

The adventure is set in the early 1900s and covers the true story of WWI veteran Percy Fawcett’s (Hunnam) multiple expeditions into the Amazon. His sole aim is to prove the existence of an ancient civilization in defiance of the skeptical scientific community. But he’s a conflicted man, driven to succeed in his search while torn by every heart-wrenching departure from his wife (Miller) and family. Robert Pattinson plays Henry Costin, the close comrade-in-arms who assists Fawcett in his dangerous trek into the South American jungle.

Uproxx writer Mike Ryan evaluates Pattinson’s portrayal of the heavily-bearded Costin:

“This is my favorite Pattinson performance because I kept forgetting it was Robert Pattinson. In his first few post-Twilight performances there was a sense that he was trying to prove himself as an actor. And that’s understandable. But here, he’s fades away into his character so well that I kept having to remind myself that it was him. That’s a good thing.”

The film is based on the David Grann bestseller of the same name. Film Stage describes the indefatigable British explorer, Percy Fawcett, and his story, as follows:

“[He] returns time and again to his beloved jungle in an attempt to prove his case, culminating in his mysterious disappearance in 1925. An epically scaled tale of courage and obsession, told in James Gray’s classic filmmaking style, THE LOST CITY OF Z is a stirring tribute to the exploratory spirit and those individuals driven to achieve greatness at any cost.”

A story of such high stakes and sweeping scope would be captivating, if done well. But in addition to stellar performances, careful, nuanced direction is essential. And, as hinted above, it seems director James Gray strikes the right note, creating a cinematic vision not to be missed. The Hollywood Reporter declares:

“[The film] is a rare piece of contemporary classical cinema; its virtues of methodical storytelling, traditional style and obsessive theme are ones that would have been recognized and embraced anytime from the 1930s through the 1970s. Whether they will be properly valued by more speed-minded modern audiences will only become known when this immaculate production is released…”

The review goes on to detail what makes the intense tale so gripping and why viewers should give it a proper chance:

“It honors the spirit of physical risk, intellectual curiosity, individual daring and self-sacrifice (of both body and sanity) required to explore the unknown, to discover more about our origins and to map the world.”

The Lost City of Z is set to open in UK theaters March 24th and U.S. theaters on April 14th. To see more stills from the upcoming film, read the entire Film Stage feature here. View the newly-released international trailer below.
