Just after winning an Olivier Award for his work on Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, sound designer Gareth Fry – along with Pete Malkin – will receive a special honorary award at the 2017 Tony Awards, for their work on the limited Broadway fall production The Encounter.

The show used headphones to depict the Amazon rainforest, requiring extreme dedication on Fry’s part – he got over 500 mosquito bites to prove it whilst recording in the heart of the Amazon! Read more in our previous coverage here.

He said of the recording process:

“You couldn’t do the usual theatrical things, with painted backdrops and bits of branches everywhere representing the Amazon, or whatever. It’s such an epic, yet claustrophobic place and the best way to create a sense of actually being there was through sound.”

The production is currently in its final run in San Francisco, until May 7th. The Tony Awards will take place on June 11th. Read more here, and join us in congratulating Gareth Fry on another well-deserved award!
