In the upcoming movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Eddie Redmayne plays Newt Scamander a wizard with a strong fascination for magical creatures. Dan Fogler plays his unlikely counterpart, Jacob, a muggle, or ‘no-maj’, from the Lower East Side of New York.

Dan Fogler told Pottermore in a recent interview, that he and Eddie’s chemistry began almost immediately during auditions. “Eddie and I had great chemistry right away,” he explains to them. “We improvised in character at the first audition and I think that really helped me get the part.”

It is obvious from the beginning how different Dan and Eddie’s characters are. Even just examining their choice of clothing, with Newt in pants that are too short and a bright overcoat and Jacob in an ill-fitted, gray three-piece with a red tie, you can tell what a unique duo they make.

“Once we get in costume, and we’re standing together, there’s definitely a Laurel and Hardy thing going on,” says Dan. “Or maybe Abbott and Costello. Sherlock and Watson, even! Just from a collective unconscious standpoint, the audience could imprint their favorite duo onto us and it works really nicely.”

Dan believes that this film is his big break, the craziest project he’s ever worked on. Not to mention he got the chance to work alongside Eddie Redmayne, just after he’d won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his part in The Theory of Everything. “I’m a fan of his. It was just really great to be around an actor who is going to be knighted some day.” Dan said.

“It’s amazing to be surrounded by people who make you better. I feel like this was, by far, the best creative experience I’ve ever had and it’s the best work I’ve ever done. I’m so excited for it to just come out already!”

Will Dan and Eddie become the next great comedy duo? I guess we’ll have to wait and see! Check out Pottermore’s interview with Dan here and don’t forget to catch Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in theaters November 18th!
