The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, in hopes of starting a new Christmas tradition, performed the film score for Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone along with a screening of the movie this past weekend. The show was part of the Harry Potter Film Concert Tour that was reported on earlier this year.

The show took place at the Riverside Theater on December 15th, 16th, and 17th at 8pm as well as a matinee show at 1pm on the 17th. Despite the freezing cold temperatures and blizzard that was in full force outside, the orchestra performed every night and still managed to attract a fairly large audience. All of the tickets to the shows were sold out prior to the event.

The event was described by The Pabst Theater Group website as:

“Audiences will be able to relive the magic of the film in high-definition on a giant screen while hearing the orchestra perform John Williams’ unforgettable score.”

Also according to the Milwaukee Record, along with watching the movie and hearing the score, audience members were encouraged to participate, which is typically unusual for orchestra performances:

“The conductor encouraged the audience to cheer and boo the characters, with Draco Malfoy getting the lion’s share of shade from the audience. Loyal audience members also cheered wizard house mentions”

Many attendees even arrived in their best Harry Potter cosplay while others chose to be more traditional and attended in formal concert attire. The orchestra members also seemed to be more relaxed and enjoying the atmosphere of playing a film score, rather than their usual traditional pieces.

It seems as if Milwaukee residents’ hopes of this turning into a Christmas tradition is catching on quickly, as the Riverside Theater has already announced that the program will return in December of next year to perform the score of Harry Potter And The Chamber of Secrets.

If you missed the Milwaukee performance, you can still catch the Harry Potter Film Concert Tour in Ohio and Wisconsin in 2017.
