The Evening Standard Theater Awards has named Harry Potter and the Cursed Child the Best Play in 2016. We offer our congratulations to the Cursed Child cast, Jack Thorne, John Tiffany, and J.K. Rowling! Harry Potter’s Ralph Fiennes (Lord Voldemort) won Best Actor for his role in The Master Builder!
The Evening Standard reported earlier today:
“Anthony Boyle, who is up for the Emerging Talent prize for his role in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, gave a thumbs up as he arrived at the theatre.
“Helen McCrory, Noma Dumezweni, Sophie Melville and Billie Piper are all contending for the Best Actress award while Sir Kenneth Branagh will compete against O-T Fagbenle, James McArdle, Ralph Fiennes and Sir Ian McKellen.”
Of the Award Winners, The Standard wrote:
“Fiennes received his award for his performances in The Master Builder at the Old Vic and Richard III at the Almeida Theatre, beating stiff competition from Ian McKellen and Kenneth Branagh.
“The best play award, given in association with the Evening Standard’s official arts partner Hiscox, went to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. The script for the smash hit production was created by JK Rowling alongside playwright Jack Thorne and director John Tiffany. The award was accepted by Thorne, Tiffany and Noma Dumezweni, who plays Hermione Granger in the production.”
