Ralph Fiennes is highly regarded for his many notable years in film. He is also famously, or infamously, known for playing some of the most well-known villains in cinema.

We know him as the man who brought He Who Must Not Be Named into visual reality. Though, after that portrayal, he claimed he was done playing bad guys.

Before he made up his his mind on playing baddies in an interview last month, however, he made quite an impression as the antagonist in A Bigger Splash, released in American theaters in May 2016.

David Ehrlich of IndieWire insists Fiennes performance is Oscar-worthy. He says:

“If Fiennes gets overlooked for his irrepressible work in Luca Guadagnino’s “A Bigger Splash,” it won’t be because he was submitted in the wrong race; it’ll be because he appears to be having way too much fun for a drama. Nevertheless, his electric turn as barnstorming bon vivant Harry Hawkes is one of 2016’s best performances.”

If Fiennes is nominated, and wins, it will cap an exemplary year of acting. He was already named Best Actor at the 2016 London Evening Standard Theatre Awards in November. He won for his roles in “The Master Builder” and “Richard III.” Among others, he beat out fellow Harry Potter alum Kenneth Branagh.
