Defeating UFO Stress

I’ve always enjoyed giving, at times too much. You know what I’m talking about¦you have a group of people in your life that just mean so much¦you want to craft them some love in a box¦you start out with gusto, a full head of steam, and then¦you fizzle out. The crafts that you started with such joy sit, sad and alone, in a basket. You look at them wistfully and tell yourself, “Maybe I’ll find the time to work on them tomorrow.”; though you know that you won’t.

How, then, do you overcome the feeling of doom and gloom that comes along with these circumstances? It’s simple. By breaking your huge idea down.

  1. Tackle one person’s gift at a time. Schedule a block of time to work on it – when I settle down to watch telly for the night is when I grab mine.
  2. Once you finish that person’s gift mail it out immediately! Keeping it sitting around will just add to your frustration.
  3. Then, start on the next persons. Don’t overcomplicate things – work in alphabetical order, that way you know that you’re not placing anyone above anyone else.

Before you know it that horrible pile of UFOs will be down to nothing. You’re not done, though¦you need to learn to not get yourself into that predicament again!

I’ve just recently discovered this little tip myself, and it works wonderfully! Instead of crafting for a big group of people all at once, try to alternate your crafting. I’ve been crafting an item for myself, finishing it, then crafting an item for a giveaway that I post on my LiveJournal account. I’ll give a “hint” a week out, letting my f-list know that I’m working on a giveaway and telling them that the first person to post wanting the item once I post it gets it. By doing this, I’m still crafting for those who are important to me; yet I’m doing it in a way that doesn’t defeat me!

Hmm, now I’m wondering how other crafters keep themselves from drowning in WIPs. If you have any ideas, tips, or tricks that you think would be of a help post them in the comments to share! Happy crafting!!
