The Alien franchise has amassed an ardent following over the years, and fans hail it as one of the greats of the sci-fi thriller genre. So when director Ridley Scott announced his plans to return to the series, this time exploring the origins of the terrifying alien species, fans were ecstatic.

Now, following the 2012 prequel Prometheus, another crew heads into space, bound to cross paths with the latest permutation of the race, and this crew appears to be led by none other than Katherine Waterston, known to Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts fans as Tina Goldstein.

Leaky previously reported that Waterston plays the role of Daniels, a strong female protagonist like that of Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) and Dr. Shaw (Noomi Rapace) before her. This time Ridley Scott takes his unlucky crew aboard the colony ship Covenant and, as we now well know, they meet a threat that leaves them fighting for their lives–and which may doom them all.

Twentieth Century Fox has been unloading the promotional clips in the last few days, looking to up the already-high anticipation in advance of the theatrical release just a little over a month away. Leaky recently posted four new television spots giving fans a glimpse of the aliens in various stages of development.

Now Movie Pilot reports the studio has gone even further, sharing some revealing photos before promptly removing the spoiler-heavy images!

*WARNING: The following contains spoilers!*

The images were x-ray shots showing a different version of the alien inside each crew member. The reveal did not bode well for Daniels (Waterston) in particular. The x-ray would appear to leave no doubt–assuming the photos aren’t clever promotional metaphors–that she has a Xenomorph growing inside her.

This would seem to indicate that she’s likely to meet the same horrifying end as Ripley and Shaw. And while Shaw managed to out-live Ripley, cutting the alien from her belly before it finished gestating, she did not survive long. So this leaves us wondering–can anyone survive such a fate? And what is Scott’s purpose in subjecting his female lead to the same horror yet again? Isn’t it a bit repetitive? We can only hope Daniels learns about these developments while there’s still time to do something heretofore unseen or imagined, because as you can see below, it doesn’t look good!

As to how this may have happened to Daniels and her unsuspecting crew, Movie Pilot has an interesting theory, and it has to do with the reappearance of Michael Fassbender’s android. The article suggests the following creepy plot twist:

“Digging a little deeper into the plot of Covenant, the images could be a hint toward ‘s role in the film. Returning as new character Walter, but also David from Prometheus, it is suggested that the masochistic mechanoid has been conducting experiments to try and craft the iconic Xenomorph aliens.”

The article continued:

“If we are going down the experimentation route, it could confirm the long-standing rumor that David is the creator of the carnivorous creatures. Scott previously teased that the muscular Engineers were NOT responsible for creating the aliens, but that Covenant would explore who did.”

If this was meant to leave eager fans on the edge of their seats, mission accomplished. We’ll have to wait until May 19th to learn more about the Covenant crew’s harrowing encounter, who’s actually behind it, and who will be left standing at the end.
